  • Variations of agronomic traits were evaluated on the progenies of regenerated rice plants of different callus origin and subculture period. From eighty-eight percent to ninety percents of ovary culture-derived plants (OCP) and anther culture-derived plants (ACP) were not segregated within the lines in major agronomic characters. Compare to ACP and OCP lines, the seed culture derived lines (SCP) showed more segregation (17%) in major agronomic traits among the lines. The most frequent segregating traits were grain fertility (6.1%) in ACP, leaf color (4.2%) in OCP and grain fertility (4.9%) and leaf color (4.9%) in SCP lines. The SCP line showed more variation in culm length, panicle length and heading date than those of OCP and ACP lines. The variation of agronomic traits in SCP lines was tended to increase with prolonged subculture. Culm and panicle length were shorter than those of original cultivar in all three types of tissue culture-derived lines (OCP, ACP and SCP).

  • Here we reported an analyzing result for the relationship between climatic variables and rice(c.v. Odaebyeo and Ilpumbyeo) yield characteristics (including some growth characteristics) based on a long-term observed data at GARES and at KMA for rice and weather, respectively. Most of crop parameters investigated, such as heading date, culm height, panicle number $m^{-2}$, grain number $panicle^{-1}$ ripening rate, 1,000 grain weight and yield were strongly affected by wind velocity and relative humidity, as well as by daily mean air temperature, precipitation, sunshine hours and daily variations in air temperature depending on variety and crop developmental stages. Air velocity and relative humidity had not been studied as climatic variables affecting on the characteristics of rice growth and yield, however, they turned out to affect all the characteristics of rice investigated, especially ripening rate and yield, as much as any other climatic variables in this study. Air velocity appeared to affect highly the culm height and yield of Odaebyeo and ilpumbyeo. Relative humidity appeared to affect highly grain number and ripening rate of Odaebyeo and yield of Ilpumbyeo. Consequently Rice yield revealed to increase in the climatic conditions of high air velocity and low relative humidity.

  • This experiment was carried out to compare the growth characteristics and productivity between sudangrass and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid under the same cultivation condition in Cheonan and Kimje of Korea from 2010 to 2011. Sudangrass hybrids(Choice, Sunstar and Piper) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrids(SX-17, Jumbo and Revolution) were planted $5^{th}$ May in Cheonan and $7^{th}$ May in Kimje. Heading date of sudangrass hybrids was $12^{th}$ July which was about 2 week fast more than that of sorghum-sudangrass hybrids. Stem diameter of sudangrass hybrids was about 6mm which was about 5 mm smaller than that of sorghum-sudangrass hybrids. Disease resistance of sudangrass hybrid, "Choice" was similar to that of sorghum-sudangrass hybrids. Dry matter yield of "Choice" was 15ton/ha which was 10% less than that for sorghum-sudangrass hybrids(SX-17). Feed value of "Choice" was similar or slightly lower than that of sorghum-sudangrass. For increasing the productivity in forage cropping systems all around year, sudangrass hybrid is recommended for prolong by the middle ten day of May in the harvesting time of italian ryegrass.

  • Field experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of different residue treatment of vetch sward on soil improvement, rice growth and grain yield from 1995 to 1996. With Chinese milkvetch, pH, Ca, and Mg of paddy soil were increased in subsoil(10~20cm soil depth), and organic matter, P$_2$ $O_{5}$, and K were increased in top soil (0~10cm soil depth). Redox potential of the paddy soil with milkvetch residue was severely reduced at earlier flooding period, and recovered gradually as rice growth continued. Weeds were more abundant in the paddy with unchanged vetch stand. The most dominant weed species in the paddy soil with vetch sward residue was Echinochloa crus-galli, followed by Leersia japonica, Polygonum hydropiper in the order of abundance. Seedling establishment ratio of rice directly sown over vetch-sward was lower than in conventional tillage paddy(no-vetch, tilled) condition. Rice growth pattern, however, was not significantly affected by vetch sward treatments. The number of tillers per square meter and plant height at heading date were not significantly different among the vetch-sward treatments. Grain yield was the highest in plough of vetch vegetation, followed by conventional (no-vetch, tilled), live-mulching of vetch, vetch-removed, and vetch-desiccated by weedcide. The whole grain rice yield was the lowest in vetch-desiccated by weedcide.
