Evaluation of Optimum Rice Heading Period under Recent Climatic Change in Yeongnam Area (기후 변화에 따른 영남지역의 벼 출수적기 평가)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the optimum heading period according to the recent climatic change for improvement of rice yield and grain quality in the Yeongnam area. We analyzed climatic elements including daily mean air temperature, daily range of air temperature, sunshine hours, and amount of precipitation from 1996 to 2005 in comparison with those of the 1971 to 2000 normal. Daily mean air temperature and amount of precipitation in the recent 10 years increased, but daily range of air temperature and sunshine hours decreased in comparison with the norm. Also, monthly mean air temperature was lowered remarkably in July and August. The monthly amount of precipitation largely increased in August and September. The daily range of air temperature and sunshine hours were greatly decreased from August to October, Possible cultivation periods for rice in the recent 10 years ranged from 171 days in Boughwa to 228 days in Busan and was expanded about $1{\sim}13$ days in comparison with the normal. Optimum heading date by local regions for the maximum climatic yield potential was estimated as July 31 at Bonghwa to September 7 at Busan, Masan, and Tongyeong in the recent 10 years. There was a wide difference in optimum heading date according to local legions of the Yeongnam area. Compared to the normal, optimum heading date in the recent 10 years was delayed about I~8 days in most local regions except Bonghwa, Mungyeong, and Yeongdeok. These results suggested that it is necessary to develop late maturity rice cultivars for producing high yield and quality rice grain due to the recent climatic change. Moreover, it is still more important to select the most suitable cultivation period appropriate to the changed climate of each local region in Yeongnam area.

Dry Matter Weight and Physicochemical Property of Job’s Tears Grain of Different Sowing Dates and Days after Flowering (율무 파종기 및 개화후 일수에 따른 종실중과 종실의 이화학적 특성 변이)

  • This study was carried out to clarify the changes in dry matter weight and physicochemical property of job's tears grain during ripening period. Four varieties of job's tears were seeded at April 20, May 10, and May 30, andgrains were harvested at every 7 days from heading to maturity, The whole seed weight of thick hull varieties, Kimje and Aewon, was higher than that of improved thin hull varieties, Suwon 3 and Suwon 6, from heading to maturity, However, the dehulled grain weight of thin hull variety were higher than that of thick hullvariety from 35 days after heading. The first heading spikelet showed lower 100-grain weight com-pared with the spikelets headed at full blooming stage among the same plant. The increased rate of de hulled grain weight during maturing period was higher in thin hull variety than thick hull one, later seeding date than early seeding, and intermediate headed spikelet than early head-ed one, respectively. As maturing proceeds the protein content of de hulled grain was decreased, alkali digestibility value(ADV) showed a rising trend, and little change was found in gel consistency of milled grain flour. And same trends were found in protein content, ADV and gel consistency as the seeding date was delayed. Among amylogram properties of job's tears flour the maximum, minimum, and final viscosity as well as breakdown were decreased, and set back was increased in later seeding plots

Characteristics Related to Photosynthesis and Grain Yield of $F_1$ Hybrid Rice (벼 1대잡종의 광합성 및 수량 관련 특성)

  • This study was carried out to investigate heterosis in photosynthetic characteristics and yield of F$_1$ hybrid rice using genetic cytoplasmic male sterile lines. Two F$_1$ hybrid rices, HR7028A/Yongmoonbyeo and IR54756A/Yongmoonbyeo, showed heterobeltiosis in dry weight and leaf area at the heading date and at the 20 day after heading. HR7028A/Yongmoonbyeo showed heterobeltiosis and IR54756A/Yongmoonbyeo showed heterosis in chlorophyll content and RuDPCase activity in flag leaf, T-sugar and starch content in stem, and $CO_2$ fixation at the 20 day after heading as well as at the heading date. HR7028A/Yongmoonbyeo showed heterobeltiosis in number of panicles and grains per panicle, and IR54756A/Yongmoonbyeo had heterobeltiosis in number of panicles per plant. As results, heterobeltiosis of HR7028A/Yongmoonbyeo in yield was 11% and that of IR54756A/Yongmoonbyeo was 4%.

A New Early-Heading and High Forage Yielding Rye Variety "Egreen" (극조숙, 다수성 조사료 및 녹비용 호밀 신품종 "이그린")

  • "Egreen" rye (Secale cereale L.) was developed by National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA. It was released in 2007 because of its excellent earliness and yield potential. Crossing was made by an open pollination with 10 rye lines in 1995. Many lines from the open pollinated population were handled in a mass selection program in subsequent generations. Among them the line 'SR95POP-S1-116-1-1-2'was selected for earliness and promising agronomic appearance and placed in yield trial for two years from 2003 to 2004. In 2005, it was designated "Homil 34" and subjected to regional yield trials. Over 3 years, "Egreen" averaged 8.34 MT ha-1 of forage yield (based on dry matter) harvested at the heading date of check variety "Olhomil", which was superior to other varieties such as "Olhomil" and "Koolgrazer" with an increase of 8% and 10%, respectively. Heading date of "Egreen" was April 22, 3 days earlier than that of "Olhomil". It would be recommended as a winter crop forforage and green manure before planting either maize or rice in Korea.

Assessment of Critical Temperature for the Grain Filling of Late Transplanted Temperate Rice

  • Grain filling traits of rice were traced to determine the critical temperature that ceased grain filling process, from the late transplanted temperate rice varieties in the field conditions of2020 and 2021. The tested three varieties were transplanted six times with four target heading dates of 20 Aug. (control), 10 Sep., 20 Sep. and 30 Sep. Nine times of sampling were made from a week after heading with three replicates for each treatment. Development of grain filling percentage, grain dry weight and milled rice weight demonstrated sigmoid curves in the first and second transplants of 2020, and in the first to third transplants of 2021. The three grain filling traits in the 2020 third transplants and in the 2021 fourth transplants initially increased with the progress of grain development, and reached the peaks at certain time points, then decreased thereafter. Non-linear regression analyses, performed for the traits in the transplants that showed sigmoid curves except control, indicated that 95% of the final data (95% FD) was attained when the seven-day moving temperature (Sd-MovT) was 8.4-9.6℃, which excluded the cases when the temperature before the dates of 95% FD was lower than that on the dates of 95% FD. Sd-MovT on the date of peak data was 8.5-9.8℃ in the 2020 third transplants and 6.9-8.3℃ in the 2021 fourth transplants. Grain development was observed when seven-day mean temperature (Sd-MT) from 35 to 41 days after heading date was 9.4-10.8℃ in the 2020 third transplants and 10.1-11.9℃ in the 2021 fourth transplants. But Sd-MT of 8.7-9.1℃ in 2020 and 6.9-7.6℃ in 2021, at 42-48 days after heading, resulted in no progress of grain development. Overall, Sd-MovT at the point of stagnated grain development appeared in the range of 6.9-9.8℃. The lowest Sd-MT that showed the progress of grain development was 9.4-9.5℃ and the highest Sd-MT that showed no grain development was 9.1℃, both of which appeared in Odae and Haiami of the 2020 third transplants Therefore it is concluded that critical temperature for the grain development of temperate rice in natural conditions exists between 9.1℃ and 9.5℃.
