The chlorophyll-related compound pheophorbide a (Pa) was successively purified from an edible red seaweed, Grateloupia elliptica, using silica, octadecyl silica column chromatography and reversed phase-high-performance liquid chromatography, as well as the cell cycle inhibitory and apoptotic effects of Pa being investigated in U87MG glioblastoma cells. The Pa exhibited strong anticancer effects in the absence of direct photo-irradiation against various cancer cell lines, including U87MG, SK-OV-3, and HeLa cells. Among the cancer cells, the strongest anticancer activity of Pa exhibited on U87MG cells with $IC_{50}$ values of 2.8 ${\mu}g/ml$. In addition, Pa specifically had cytostatic activity on glioblastoma cells rather than human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Analysis of the cell cycle distribution showed that Pa induced G0/G1 arrest of U87 MG cells. In addition, arrested cells induced late apoptosis and DNA degradation under dark condition. These results suggest that Pa isolated from G. elliptica is a potential glioblastoma-specific anticancer agent without side effects on normal cells.

The present work aimed to explore green approach via aqueous leaves extract of Murraya koenigii (ALEMk) for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPsMk) in single step. The synthesis process was visualized with a color change and monitored by employing UV/Visible spectroscopy and a clear peak attained at 420 nm confirming the synthesis of AgNPsMk. The possible functional groups present in the extract which participated in the synthesis of AgNPsMk were identified with the help of FTIR spectroscopy. Further characterization using TEM images revealed the spherical shape of AgNPsMk with average particle size of 20 nm displaying well dispersion throughout the solution. Pronounced antioxidant activities of AgNPsMk at increased concentrations observed which evidencing strong radical scavenging ability. Moreover, AgNPsMk exhibited strong antibacterial behavior when tested against bacterial strains of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Moving ahead, in vitro cytotoxicity work revealed potent cell viability loss appearing in AU565 and HeLa cancer cell lines on exposure to AgNPsMk at increased concentration. Finally, in vivo assessment carried out inside male Wistar rats indicated non toxic effect on examined liver tissues besides biochemical analysis including bilirubin, alkaline phosphtase (ALP) and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) which found within the normal range when compared with control. The prior research work profoundly apprises the potential of green synthesized AgNPsMk to play a significant role in biomedical applications and formulations.

To develop a promising alkylating agents for anti-cervical cancer chemotherapy, five mitosene analogues were synthesized. Despite the potentiality of better cytotoxicity on solid tumor cells as opposed to that on rapidly-doubled leukemic cells, there have been no reports on the inhibition of the cervical cancer cell line by mitosene analogues. The present experiment was designed to investigate whether mitosene analogues can effectively inhibit the cellular proliferation of cervical cancer cells by using an in vitro chemosensitivty system. The mitosene analogues displayed a potent cytotoxic effect on the tested cervical cancer cell lines. Among the analogues, (22) compound gave the best inhibitory effect on SiHa tumor colonies formation. These data indicate that mitosene analogues can effectively inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells in vitro.

Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds that are ubiquitous in plants. They have been shown to possess a variety of biological activities, such as antioxidant and anticancer. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) lead to damages of cellular molecules and it is the one of various factors to induce cancer. The one of flavonoids, Luteolin, was found to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-piculhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover luteolin showed protection on hamster lung fibroblast cells (V79-4 cell) damage induced by $H_2O_2$. And then it was investigated whether it may show cytotoxicity effect against various cancer cells by MTT, Luteolin at $10{\mu}g/ml$ showed the cell viability of 63.2%, 34.7%, 18.4% and 71.4% against NCl-H460, HeLa, U937 and MCF-7, respectively. As a result, luteolin shows more sensitive to U937 cells among the tested cancer cell lines. In summary, luteolin has antioxidant and cytotoxicity effect or various cancer cell lines.

The present study was conducted to evaluate of the 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging effect, cytotoxicity and tyrosinase inhibition activities using methanol extracts from different parts of four herb plants. The results showed that whole and root extracts of yarrow the highest total polyphenol and flavonoid contents as well as whole of yarrow revealed the highest DPPH radical scavenging effect. In cytotoxicity test against three cancer cell lines, HeLa (uterus), SK-Hep-1 (liver), and YD-15 (oral), the whole extract of feverfew showed the highest toxicity with $IC_{50}$ values of $102.58-138.68{\mu}g/mL$. Also, mallow root extract ($71.24{\mu}g/mL$) exhibited potent tyrosinase inhibitory activity comparable to arbutin ($69.56{\mu}g/mL$), which was used as the control.
This study was carried out to investigate the affects on antimicrobial and cytotoxicity of red cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.,BO). In the paper disc test, antimicrobial activity of BO fractions was increased in proportion to its concentration. Among the various solvent fractions of methanol extract (BOM) of BO, the ethylacetate partition layer (BOMEA) showed the strongest antimicrobial activity We also determined the cytotoxicity and Quinone Reductase induced effect of BO extract and fractions on human cancer cells. The cytotoxicity of BO fractions on HepG2, HeLa and MCF-7 cells was evaluated by MTT assay. The BOMEE and BOMEA showed strong cytotoxic effects on all cancer cell lines we used. The quinone reductase induced effect of BO fractions on HepG2 cells, the hexane partition layer (BOMH) at a dose of 200 $\mu{g}$/ml was 2.88 times more effective compared to the control values of 1.0.
In this study, we investigated antimicrobial and cytotoxicity effects to each fraction extracted from Solanum lyratum (SL), which were extracted methanol (SLM) and then the extract was fractionated into five different types : hexane (SLMH), ethyl ether (SLMEE), ethylacetate (SLMEA), butanol (SLMB) and aqueous (SLMA). The antimicrobial activity was analyzed by the paper disc method. Among the various solvent fractions, SLMEA showed the strongest antimicrobial activies. The cytotoxicity of SL fractions on HeLa, MCF-7, HT-29 and HepG2 cells was evaluated by MTT assay. Among various partition layers, SLMEE showed the strongest cytotoxic effects to all cancer cell lines. We also observed that quinone reductase (QR) was induced by all fraction layers of SL to HepG2 cells. Since the QR-induced effects of SLMEE on HepG2 cells at $160{\mu}g/ml$ concentration showed 2.1 when compared with a control value of 1.0, inducer of QR for cancer protection may be contained in this fraction.

The present study describes the preliminary evaluation of the cytotoxic effect from Styela clava (Korean name : miduduk) extracts. S. clava was treated with methanol, ethanol, acetone, and water, then cytotoxic effect of the extracts were evaluated by the MTT reduction assay. The ethanol extracts from S. clava showed the cytotoxic activity on the HT-29 human colon cancer cells. The ethanol extracts was further fractionated with n-hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, and water according to the degree of polarity. The diethyl ether fraction showed high cytotoxic activity of HT-29 cells. however, the other fractions showed low cytotoxicity. The diethyl ether layer also showed the cytotoxic activity against SW620, HeLa, and MCF-7 cells. These studies support that extracts from S. clava may be a potential candidate as a possible chemotherapeutic agent against human cancer cells.

In order to find out anticancer activity of Korean pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), the cytotoxicity against 8 cell lines including 293 (normal kidney cells) and A-431 (epidermoid carcinoma cells) of extracts by extraction solvents and plant parts were investigated using MTT assay. Also the correlation between content of capsaicin known as anticancer ingredient and cytotoxicity of extracts from pepper were analyzed. The distilled water extracts from seed and germinated seed showed very high cytotoxicity against 6 cancer cell lines including A549 (lung carcinoma cells), AGS (stomach adenocarcinoma cells), HeLa (cervix adenocarcinoma cells), HepG2 (hepatoblastoma cells), HT-29 (colon adenocarcinoma cells), and MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma cells). But 80% ethanol and methanol extracts showed cytotoxicity against 293 and AGS. The $RC_{50}$, that was, the concentration of sample required for 50% reduction of cell viability, of seed and germinated seed extracts against AGS were $33.4{\sim}389.1{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and $63.9{\sim}1,316.7{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, respectively, so anticancer activity was higher in seed than in germinated seed. In capsaicin contents, seed with high cytotoxicity and pericarp with a little cytotoxicity contained $47.4{\sim}1,260.0{\mu}g/g$ and $58.3{\sim}1,498.0{\mu}g/g$, respectively. As these results, the correlation was not between cytotoxicity and capsaicin content.

This study was conducted to isolate a compound with anticancer properties from the roots of Peucedanum japonicum Thunb. (Umbelliferae), and to evaluate the efficacy of that compound's anticancer activity. The $CHCl_3$ layer was purified via repeated column chromatography and recrystallization. The two compounds isolated from $CHCl_3$ layer were identified via NMR spectroscopic analysis as (10E) 1,10-heptadecadiene-4,6-diyne-3,8,9-triol (Comp. I) and anomalin (Comp. II). (10E) 1,10-heptadecadiene-4,6-diyne-3,8,9-triol was the first report from the roots of P. japonicum. MTT assays were conducted to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxic activities of Compounds I and II against the following human cancer cell lines: HeLa, HepG2, SNU-16, and AGS. Comp. I evidenced the most profound cytotoxic activity against HepG2 cells ($IC_{50}=6.04{\mu}g/mL$), and Comp. II exhibited the most profound cytotoxic activity against SNU-16 cells ($IC_{50}=18.24{\mu}g/mL$) among the human cancer cell lines tested in this study. However, no significant cell death was observed in the CCD-25Lu human normal lung fibroblast cells. Quantitative analysis using UPLC (Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography) showed that the roots of P. japonicum contained 0.015 (Comp. I) and 1.69 mg/g (Comp. II) of these compounds.
