Investigation on the Design Method of a Energy Harvesting Power Supply for a Smart Sensor (스마트 센서의 에너지 하베스팅 전원 공급부 설계 방안 연구)

  • A smart sensor is the key element to implement IoT (Internet of Things) service, as a terminal equipment. This paper investigated the design method of a power supply using energy harvesting technique for a smart sensor. the performance of a power supply using a solar cell and a piezoelectric transducer as a energy harvesting device was verified and the method to optimize a power supply was analyzed depending on the operating condition of a smart sensor. Also the method to increase a battery life cycle as a auxiliary power supply was proposed.

Mulching Cultivation Method and Harvesting Implement of Pleurotus ostreatus (느타리버섯 멀칭재배 방법과 수확도구)

  • The study which was conducted to determine the effects of the polyethylene film on the culture of Pleurotus ostreatus is summarized in the following: 1) The fresh weight of Pleurotus ostreatus cultured by the box culture method mulching with black polyethylene film was 2,237g/box and, 2,028g/box by white polyethylene film mulching, and 1,695g/box at the conventional culture which was by 24.2% and 16.4% higher than that of the conventional culture.2) The fresh weight of P. ostreatus cultured by the shelf culture method mulching with the black polyethylene film was 17.4kg/m$^2$ at the white polyethylene film culture, 14.6kg/m$^2$ at the conventional culture which was by 16.2%, 7.5% higher than that of the conventional culture. 3) The best shape appearance in terms of the diameter in P. ostreatus was 5~30mm and the intervals were 10cm respectively. 4) The black polyethylene film mulching in P. ostreatus observed in good protection against Pseudomonas spp., Trichoderma, or mushroom flies. 5) The black polyethylene film mulching method for the culture of P. ostreatus was much better than that of the shelf-culture, box-culture or the sack culture in terms of total yield and quality. 6) The length of harvesting implement of P. ostreatus was suitable for 45~120cm in order to use on the harvest of the mulching.

  • Most existing simulators for wireless sensor networks(WSNs) are modeling battery-based sensors and providing MAC and routing protocols designed for battery-based WSNs. However, recently, as energy harvesting sensor systems have been studied more extensively, there is an increasing need for appropriate simulators, but few related studies have employed such simulators. Unlike existing simulators, simulators for energy harvesting WSNs require a new energy model that is integrated with the energy-harvesting model, rechargeable battery model, and energy-consuming model. Additionally, it should enable the applications of the well-known MAC and routing protocols designed for energy-harvesting WSNs, as well as a user-friendly interface for convenience. In this work, we design and implement a user-friendly simulator for solar energy-harvesting WSNs.

  • Most of existing simulator for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) models the battery-based sensor and provides the MAC and routing protocols designed for the battery-based WSNs. Recently, however, as the energy harvesting sensor systems are studied widely, the require of the simulator for them is getting increased; but the related work is insignificant. Unlike the existing simulators, the simulator for the energy-harvesting WSNs requires the new energy model which is integrated with the energy-harvesting model, rechargeable battery model and energy-consuming model. Additionally, it should provide the well-known MAC and routing protocols designed for the energy-harvesting WSNs, and also provide the user-friendly interface for the convenient usage. In this work, we analysis the existing Castalia simulator and revise it for the user-friendly simulator for the solar energy harvesting WSNs.

  • This paper presents the system design, implement, and measurement results of the testbed for the wireless RF energy harvesting system. The developed testbed can be used for RF power transfer and data communication using the 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz frequency bands. It allows to evaluate the system performances for the RF power and data transmission. The testbed can also be used to develop algorithms for efficient energy harvesting.

  • In conventional solar energy harvesting systems, continuous perturbation techniques of the duty cycle or switching frequency of a power converter have been used to implement MPPT(Maximum Power Point Tracking) control. In this paper, we propose a new MPPT technique to control the duty cycle of a power switch powering a power converter. The proposed circuit is designed in 0.35um CMOS process, and the designed chip area including pads is $770um{\times}800um$.

  • In this paper micro-scale solar energy harvesting system with a new MPPT control are proposed.   • Energy harvesting characteristics of trapezoidal piezoelectric cantilever generator, which has a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) laminate film, were compared by longitudinal (3-3) and transverse (3-1) modes. The PZT laminate film, fabricated by a conventional tape casting process, was cofired with Ag electrode at $850^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. A multi-layered Ag electrode by a planar pattern and an interdigitated pattern was applied to the PZT laminate to implement the 3-3 and 3-1 modes, respectively. The energy harvesting performance of the 3-3 mode trapezoidal piezoelectric cantilever generator was better than that of the 3-1 mode. An extremely high output power density of $26.7mW/cm^3$ for the 3-3 mode was obtained at a resonant frequency of 145 Hz under a load resistance of $50{\Omega}$ and acceleration of 1.3 G, which is ~3-times higher than that for the 3-1 mode. Therefore, the 3-3 mode is considered significantly efficient for application to high-performance piezoelectric cantilever generator.

  • CanSat has being attracted considerable attentions for the use as training purposes owing to its advantage that can implement overall system functions of typical commercial satellites within a small package like a beverage can. So-called P.P.T CanSat (Power Plant Trio Can Satellite), proposed in this study, is the name of a CanSat project which have participated in 2015 domestic CanSat competition. Its main objective is to self-power on a LED and a MEMS sensor module by using electrical energy harvested from solar, wind and piezo energy harvesting systems. This study describes the system design results, payload level function tests, flight test results and lessons learned from the flight tests.

Development of a Vine Crusher for Harvesting Sweet Potato (고구마 덩굴처리기 개발)

  • This study was carried out to develop a vine crusher for harvesting sweet potato. The experimental two-row vine crusher attachable to agricultural tractor composed of vine crushing part with frail type vine crushing blades and vine lifting blades, power transmission part with chain and gear transmission mechanism, crushing height control part with two control wheels and manual levers, and implement frames, was designed and fabricated. And this vine crushing performance was also analyzed. From vine crushing tests, backward travel direction (i.e., rotational direction of the vine crushing blades) showed better vine crushing performance than forward travel direction. Crushing ratio of remained vine was increased, and length of remained vine and length of crushed vine were decreased as working speed was decreased and rotational speed of vine crushing blades was increased. At a working speed of 0.27 m/s and rotational speed of vine crushing blades of 800 rpm, crushing ratio of remained vine was 98%, length of remained vine was 104 mm, and length of crushed vine was 327 mm. But, when crushing vine on irregular ridges, vines and mulching vinyl were wound in the vine crushing part. Therefore, change of location of power transmission chain mechanism, and an automatic control device for controlling crushing height were needed.
