  • A technology roadmap was developed for haptic interface technologies to be applied to games. Haptic interface technologies are expected to play an important role in games to provide gamers with interaction and immersive perception in near future, even though haptic interface technologies have been less studied than other perception-related technologies with respect to games. Information on two types of haptic interfaces - portable and desktop - and their evolution processes were analyzed in terms of technological demands. Haptic feedback technologies to realize these demands were inspected with the time frame and haptic feedback technologies were derived using a technology tree. The technology roadmap of haptic interfaces in game was finally constructed by mapping the technological demands in time with game technology trends. The technology roadmap of haptic interfaces will have implications on developing haptic interfaces to be applied to many applications including virtual realities and games.

  • Teleoperation enables an operator to manipulate remote objects. One of the main goals in teleoperation researches is to provide the operator with the fueling of the telepresence, being present at the remote site. For these purposes, a master robot must be designed as a bilateral control system that can transmit position/force information to a slave robot and feedback the interaction force. A newly proposed impedance algorithm is applied for the control of a haptic interface that was developed as a master robot. With the movements of the haptic interface for position/force commands, impedance parameters are always varying. When the impedance parameters between an operator and the haptic interface and the dynamic model are known precisely, many model based control theories and methods can be used to control the device accurately. However, due to the parameters'variations and the uncertainty of the dynamic model, it is difficult to control haptic interfaces precisely. This paper presents a robust adaptive impedance control algorithm for haptic interfaces.

  • The stability and theoretical performance limits of the feedback controlled force reflecting haptic manipulator have been discussed. All the virtual environment which interact physically with the haptic system have its own stable performance limit. Three different realization of the interfaces have been compared using the driving point admittance. The haptic system which is separated from the human hand or finger is superior to its stable interaction provided that there is a means to apply a direct damping between the haptic manipulator and the human finger Electro-magnetic force is used for its digital implementation of the simple separated type haptic device. The stable limits of a virtual wall is calculated and experimental results show that there is performance limits in this implementation.

  • Shaping realistic hairstyles for digital characters is a difficult, long and tedious task. The lack of appropriate interaction metaphors enabling efficient and simple, yet accurate hair modeling further aggravates the situation. This paper presents 3D interaction metaphors for modeling virtual hair using haptic interfaces. We discuss user tasks, ergonomic aspects, as well as haptics-based styling and fine-tuning tools on an experimental prototype. In order to achieve faster haptic rates with respect to the hair simulation and obtain a transparent rendering, we adapt our simulation models to comply with the specific requirements of haptic hairstyling actions and decouple the simulation of the hair strand dynamics from the haptic rendering while relying on the same physiochemical hair constants. Besides the direct use of the discussed interaction metaphors in the 3D modeling area, the presented results have further application potential in hair modeling facilities for the entertainment industry and the cosmetic sciences.

  • With the widespread use of multifunctional devices, haptic sensation is a promising type of sensory channel because it can be applied as an additional channel for transferring information for traditional audiovisual user interfaces. Many researchers have shed new light on non-contact haptic displays for their potential use on ambient and natural user interfaces. This paper introduces several of the latest schemes for creating a mid-air haptic sensation based on their transfer medium: ultrasonic phased arrays, air nozzles, thermal and plasmonic lasers, and electromagnets. We describe the principles used in delivering haptic sensation in each technology, as well as state-of-the-art technologies from leading research groups, and brief forecasts for further research directions.

  • Nanoscale task such as nanolithography and nanoindenting is a challenging work that is beyond the capabilities of human sensing and precision. Since surface forces and intermolecular forces dominate over gravitational and other more intuitive forces of the macro world at the nanoscale, a user is not familiar with these novel nanoforce effects. In order to overcome this scaling barrier, haptic interfaces that consist of visual and force feedback at the macro world have been used with an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) as a manipulator at the nanoscale. In this paper, a nanoscale virtual coupling (NSVC) concept is introduced and the relationship between performance and impedance scaling factors of velocity (or position) and force are explicitly represented. Experiments have been performed for nanoindenting and nanolithography with different materials in the nanoscale virtual surface. The interaction forces (non contact and contact nanoforces) between the AFM tip and the nano sample are transmitted to the operator through the haptic interface.

  • A practical issue is studied to improve the performance of a new energy based method of achieving stable, high performance haptic interface control. The issue is related to resetting the amount of energy accumulated in the Passivity Observer for faster operation. A heuristic method is derived and experimentally tested for the resetting and it is shown to help the PC to operate sooner when the system gets active. Experimental results are presented for the “Excalibur” haptic device.

  • Electro-active polymers and dielectric elastomers have many intriguing properties that enable smart interfaces and electrically tunable optical systems, such as haptic feedback devices, artificial muscles, and expansion-tunable optical elements. These device classes are of great interest owing to their promising roles in next-generation technologies including virtual or augmented reality, human sensing and muscular enhancement, and artificial skins. In this report, we review basic principles, current state-of-the-art techniques, and future prospects of electro-active and dielectric elastomer technology. We describe chemical and physical properties of the most promising polymer substances, essential elementary architectures for artificial muscle-like functionalities, and their applications to haptic interfaces, muscular enhancement, and focus-tunable optical elements.

  • In this study, a spatial 3-dof haptic mechanism is implemented. The implemented mechanism does not employ the gear transmissions as velocity reducers for all three joints but uses wire-based transmissions, thereby it is able to minimize the frictions significantly. Also, by employing the structure of the four-bar mechanism to drive third joint from close to the base, the mechanism is able to minimize the inertia effect from the third actuator very effectively. Its kinematic analysis such as position and velocity analyses are performed first. Then, its operating software development, hardware implementation, and the related interfaces between a PC and the implemented Haptic device are completed. To evaluate its potential and its performance as a haptic device, a experiment generating a virtual constraint in a operational task space is conducted and preliminary results are discussed.
