This study was arranged to investigate effects of maternal nursing potential on immune metabolites in blood, body weight gain and occurrence of disease in Hanwoo calves. Forty experimental calves were used and allocated into two groups with different maternal nursing potential. Thus, high or low maternal nursing potential group had twenty calves, respectively. The concentrations of IGF-I, RBC, Ca and IP in blood were similar between two groups, except for RBC. RBC concentration in blood from high maternal nursing potential group was significantly higher compared with low maternal nursing potential group at 5 days after birth (p<0.05). The concentrations of IgG, albumin, total protein and GGT in blood were similar between two groups during the whole experimental period. The days from birth had no effects on the concentration of IgG, albumin and GGT in blood from two groups, except for total protein. Similarly, the maternal nursing potential had no direct effect on body weight of calves, but body weight in high maternal nursing potential group tended to be higher compared with low maternal nursing potential group at 6 months age. The occurrence of respiratory disease and diarrhea in high maternal nursing potential group was relatively lower compared with low maternal nursing potential group. Therefore, the present study indicating that maternal nursing potential had effect on growth, and immune system in relation to disease in calves.
Calf diarrhea is a disease experienced by almost all of calves after birth and is one of the representative causes of damage to farmers due to mass mortality and of economic losses to them by inhibiting normal growth. In this study, we conducted quick detection of etiologic agents of diarrhea by using a rapid diagnostic kit to multiply diagnose antigens of five etiologic agents of calf diarrhea (rotavirus, coronavirus, Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia) in Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) calves. When the positive antigen proportion of the calf diarrheal feces for each farm was analyzed, rotavirus, coronavirus, Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia showed antigen positive rates of 0~67%, 0~20%, 0~60%, 0~20%, and 0~67%, respectively. With regard to the antigen positive rate by age in days after birth, 1-week-old calves showed the antigen positive rate of 20% in rotavirus and 20% in Giardia, and 2-week-old calves showed that of 50% in rotavirus. In addition, 4-week-old calves showed the antigen positive rate of 10% in rotavirus, 10% in coronavirus, 10% in Escherichia coli, and 30% in Giardia, and 8-week-old calves showed the antigen positive rate of 17% in coronavirus, 50% in Escherichia coli, 17% in Cryptosporidium, and 33% in Giardia. Based on the results of this study, the etiologic agents of diarrhea in Hanwoo calves for each farm are widely distributed. Although younger than 2-week-old calves were strongly positive for rotavirus, older than 4-week-old calves were highly positive for Giardia and Escherichia coli. In conclusion, we considered that a rapid diagnostic kit is an effective method for quick detection of etiologic agents and would be helpful for cattle farmers and veterinarians to select appropriate therapeutic method.

Background: Neonatal calf diarrhea is a major problem in the cattle industry worldwide. Rotavirus and Cryptosporidium parvum are the primary causative agents, especially during the first three weeks of the calf's life. Objectives: This study investigated the differences in acid-base, electrolytes, and biochemical parameters of diarrheic calves with infection of either rotavirus or C. parvum. Methods: A total of 61 Korean native calves (≤ 20 days old) were divided into two groups based on rotavirus or C. parvum infections: rotavirus infection (n = 44) and C. parvum infection (n = 17). The calves with at a specific blood pH range (pH 6.92-7.25) were chosen for comparison. The acid-base, electrolyte, chemistry, and serum proteins were analyzed, Further, fecal examinations were performed. Results: Compared to C. parvum-infected calves, the rotavirus-infected calves showed lower levels of total carbon dioxide, bicarbonate (HCO3-), anion gap, total protein, and albumin/globulin ratio, and significantly lower levels of potassium, globulin, and α2-globulin (p < 0.05). The C. parvum-infected calves (r = 0.749) had stronger correlations between pH and HCO3- than the rotavirus-infected calves (r = 0.598). Compared to rotavirus-infected calves, strong correlations between globulin and α2-globulin, α2-globulin and haptoglobin were identified in C. parvum-infected calves. Conclusions: This study is the first to investigate acid-base, electrolyte, and biochemical parameters in calves in response to infections of rotavirus and C. parvum. Although rotavirus and C. parvum cause malabsorptive and secretory diarrhea in similar-aged calves, blood parameters were different. This would help establish the diagnostic and treatment strategies.

This study was conducted to investigate effects of weaning age on growth perforance, feed intake, disease occurrence and maternal reproductive efficiency in Hanwoo. Sixty experimental calves were allocated into two groups, early weaned (n=29, calf age 90 d, EW) and normally weaned (n=31, calf age 120 d, NW). Body weights and average daily gains during nursing and post-weaning periods were similar between two groups (p>0.05). Weaning age had no effect on calf starter, grass hay, dry matter, crude protein and TDN intakes of calves (p>0.05). Maternal calving interval in EW was shortened by 23 days compared to NW (p>0.05). Any difference in occurrence of disease was not observed between groups. Present results indicate that early weaning age has no negative effects on growth performance, feed intake or on disease occurrence in Hanwoo calves. And it has positive influence on maternal calving interval.

The current study was conducted to determine the effects of herbal supplement on growth performances and diarrhea in Hanwoo calves. Total 24 Hanwoo calves (3 treatments: 8 calves per treatment) were randomly assigned to either Control (no treatment), Treatment 1 (0.3% herb supplement), or Treatment 2 (0.5% herb supplement) diets for 150 days. Total body weight gain and total feed intake per head in Treatment 1 was 142.8 kg and 545.9 kg, respectively, and it was higher (p<0.05) compared to other groups. The blood total cholesterol range was 86.43~97.00 mg/dl, triglycerides 13.26~13.86 mg/dl, GOT 76.97~79.60 mg/dl, GPT 19.54~20.97 mg/dl, WBC 8.75~9.95 k/${\mu}{\ell}$, RBC 10.14~11.91 M/${\mu}{\ell}$, and hemoglobin 10.74~11.20 g/$d{\ell}$, respectively, with no significant (p>0.05) differences among treatments. The blood immunoglobulin G levels were 5.74~6.05 mg/ml which tended to decrease as experimental period extended. Total number of pathogens in feces showed peaks at 1~2 months after the initiation of experiment, and tended to decrease thereafter. Total number of Eimeria spp., E. coli and BVDV in feces showed no significant differences but control group showed higher counts than both treatment groups. During overall period, the incidence of pathogenic diarrhea in calves of 2 treatment groups was much lower than control group calves (C: 24, vs T1: 9, T2: 13 heads), however, it was not significant (p>0.05). In conclusion, supplementation of herbs in Hanwoo calf diets might be beneficial to improve growth performances and prevent diarrhea.

This study was conducted to examine the effect of IgY supplementation on growth performance, blood metabolism, and disease occurrence in the weaned calves at 3 or 4 month of age. Average daily gain (ADG) and feed intakes were not affected by IgY supplementation, regardless of weaning months. White blood cell (WBC) count of the control group was higher in the final stage than in the initial stage (p<0.05), while that of the IgY supplemented group was lower in the final stage compared to the initial stage (p<0.05). regardless of treatments. Hematocrit (HCT) and red blood cell (RBC) counts were lower in the final stage than in the initial stage (p<0.05), but mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) counts were higher in the final stage than in the initial stage, regardless of treatments. In the control group, concentrations of albumin and globulin were higher in the final stage compared to the initial stage in the weaned calves at 3 month of age (p<0.05), and concentration of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) was increased in the IgY supplemented group. In the control group, concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma (${\gamma}$)-glutamyl transferase (GGT) were higher in the final stage compared to the initial stage (p<0.05). In contrast, concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma(${\gamma}$)-glutamyl transferase (GGT) were lower in the final stage compared to the initial stage for the IgY supplemented group. A diarrhea calf was only found in the control group. Manure score was higher in the control group compared to IgY supplemented group (p<0.05). Thus, these results indicates that IgY supplementation had positive effects on some blood metabolites, fecal condition score and diarrhea without negative effect on growth performance of the weaned Hanwoo calves.
The present survey was conducted to provide basic information on Hanwoo calf weaning age and farmer's understanding of early weaning. Eight hundred and sixty-two Hanwoo breeding farms from all nine provinces were surveyed via personal interviews. The percentages of farms categorized by herd size were 30.5%, 32.8%, 26.0% and 10.7% for <50 heads, 51~100 heads, 101~200 heads and >200 heads, respectively. The percentage of farms weaning calves at three months of age were 39.2% and 12% of farms weaned calves less than two months of age. But the percentage of farms weaning at or over four months of age were still high, being 16.1% at four months of age and 16.6% over five months of age, respectively. The result of the present study showed that calf weaning age in Hanwoo was inconsistent and higher percentage of farms wean calves at three months of age among the surveyed farms. The improvement of cow reproductive performance was answered as the biggest merit of early weaning.
The aim of the present study was to identify coat color associated genes that are differentially expressed in mature Korean brindle cattle (KBC) with different coat colors and in Hanwoo cows. KBC calves, before and after coat color appearance, were included. Total cellular RNA was isolated from the tail hair cells and used for microarray. The number of expressed coat color associated genes/probes was 5813 in mature KBC and Hanwoo cows. Among the expressed coat color associated genes/probes, 167 genes were the coat color associated genes listed in the Gene card database and 125 genes were the pigment and melanocyte genes listed in the Gene ontology_bovine database. There were 23 genes/probes commonly listed in both databases and their expressions were further studied. Out of the 23 genes/probes, MLPH, PMEL, TYR and TYRP1 genes were expressed at least two fold higher (p<0.01) levels in KBC with brindle color than either Hanwoo or KBC with brown color. TYRP1 expression was 22.96 or 19.89 fold higher (p<0.01) in KBC with brindle color than either Hanwoo or KBC with brown color, respectively, which was the biggest fold difference. The hierarchical clustering analysis indicated that MLPH, PMEL, TYR and TYRP1 were the highly expressed genes in mature cattle. There were only a few genes differentially expressed after coat color appearance in KBC calves. Studies on the regulation and mechanism of gene expression of highly expressed genes would be next steps to better understand coat color determination and to improve brindle coat color appearance in KBC.
This study was carried out to examine the efficiency of biopsy methods, and the pregnancy rate, calving and abortion rates, gestation length and birth weight of Hanwoo calves following transfer of fresh, frozen and sexed Hanwoo embryos produced in vitro. The survivability of biopsied embryos was 80.0 and 90.0% using aspiration and punching methods at 24 h after culturing, respectively. The ratios of male and female embryos were 42.1 and 52.6%, respectively, and the percentage of sex unidentified was 5.3%. Pregnancy rates was not significantly different between hCG and control group (46.4 vs. 38.5%), fresh and frozen embryos (41.3 vs. 35.0%), and sexed and IVP embryos (27.5 vs. 41.2%) (p>0.05). Calving and abortion rates of IVP and sexed embryos were not significantly different in calving (85.0 vs. 87.0%) and in abortion (15.2 vs. 13.3%) (p<0.05). Gestation length of IVP and sexed calves were 281.3 and 288.2 days in female and 283.0 and 282.3 days in male, and the birth weight of IVP and sexed calves were 23.6 and 25.0 kg in female and 24.6 and 23.8 kg in male, respectively. There were no difference in gestation length and birth weight between IVP embryos and sexed embryos (p>0.05). Administration of hCG to recipients did not improve the pregnancy rate following transfer of Hanwoo embryos produced in vitro and sexed embryos. Although the production of calves derived from sexed Hanweoo embryos cultured in vitro can be obtained, the efficiency of sexed calves production need to be improved in biopsy methods and pregnancy rate. Further study should be focused on the improvement of pregnancy rates for commercial application of embryo transfer.

The present study was conducted to investigate effects of feeding concentrate on development of intestinal tract and composition of muscle in suckling Hanwoo calves before weaning(60 days of age). Twenty-four Hanwoo calves(12 heifers and 12 bulls) at six days of age were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments[hay and two levels(low and high) of concentrate feeding] and given each diet with free access to their dams for suckling until 60 days of age. At 60 days of age, two calves from each treatment were used for post-mortem examination of intestine development and chemical analysis of muscle. Feed intake between 31 and 60 days of age was significantly(P<0.05) higher for the high concentrate treatment(532.4g/d) than for other treatments(78.9 and 108.9g/d for hay and low concentrate treatments, respectively). Although feed intake showed a large difference between the low and high concentrate treatments, body weights at birth and 60 days of age were similar between the treatments, suggesting that calves in the low concentrate feeding were supplied more milk from their dams than those in the high concentrate feeding. The ratio of intestine weight to body weight at 60 days of age was increased in the high concentrate(3.35%), compared with those in the hay(2.93%) and low concentrate(3.03%) treatments. The chemical composition of muscle in sirloin and hind leg was not affected by the treatments. In conclusions, the results of the present study showed that feeding concentrate to Hanwoo calves before weaning might stimulate intestine development relative to feeding hay.
