Hangul text normalization in current Unicode makes wrong Hangul syllable problems when using with precomposed modern Hangul syllables and composing old Hangul by using conjoining-Hangul Jamo and compatibility Hangul Jamo. This problem comes from allowing incorrect normalization form of compatibility Hangul Jamo and Hangul Symbol and also permitting to use conjoining-Hangul Jamo mixture with precomposed Hangul syllable in Unicode Hangul composing rule. It is caused by lack of consideration of old Hangul and/or insufficient understanding of Hangul code processing when writing specification for normalization forms in Unicode. Therefore on this paper, we study Hangul code in Unicode environment, specifically problems of normalization used for Web and XML, IDN in nowadays. Also we propose modification of Hangul normalization methods and Hangul composing rules for correct processing of Hangul normalization in Unicode.

In Unicode, two types of Hangul encoding schemes are currently in use, namely, the "precomposed modern Hangul syllables" model and the "conjoining Hangul characters" model. The current Unicode Hangul conjoining rules allow a precomposed Hangul syllable to be a member of a syllable which includes conjoining Hangul characters; this has resulted in a number of different Hangul encoding implementations. This unfortunate problem stems from an incomplete understanding of the Hangul writing system when the normalization and encoding schemes were originally designed. In particular, the extended use of old Hangul was not taken into consideration. As a result, there are different ways to represent Hangul syllables, and this cause problem in the processing of Hangul text, for instance in searching, comparison and sorting functions. In this paper, we discuss the problems with the normalization of current Hangul encodings, and suggest a single efficient rule to correctly process the Hangul encoding in Unicode.

This research is for implementation of a software that can convert Hangul format file to $T_EX$ format file. Hangul is a word processor that has widely been used in Korea. It is known that Hangul is relatively easy of typing in equations and tables in preparing a paper draft. $T_EX$ has been developed as a computer programming language for preparing and publishing documents. Documents are first typed in with a plain text editor with $T_EX$ commands and then is compiled and linked. The software implemented in this research converts Hangul format files which are written under the specific format of a journal to $T_EX$ format file with the given style specific file. It converts special symbols, texts, tables, equations, and paragraph formats. We have used Hangul format of Journal of the Korean Data & Information Science Society (JKDISS) and the style file of $T_EX$ for the beta-test for the software.

An interactive Hangul input method using the numeric phone keypad, which is applicable for mobile devices is introduced. In the proposed method, user only selects the corresponding keys by single tapping, for the alphabet of Korean letter which is desired to enter. The interface generates the subset of eligible letters for the key sequence, then the user selects the desired letter in the set. Such an interactive approach transforms the text entry interface into a multi-level interactive letter-oriented style, from the preexisting passive and single-level alphabet-oriented interface. The annoyance of key-operations, the major disadvantage of the previous methods, derived from multi-tap to clear the ambiguity of multi-assigned alphabets for the Hangul automata, can be eliminated permanently, while the additional letter selection procedure to finalize the desired letter is essential. Also the complexity of Hangul text entry is reduced since all letters can be compounded from basic alphabet selection of the writing sequence order. The advantage and disadvantage of the proposed method are analyzed through comparing with pre-existing method by experiments.

Unicode Han ideograph character set differed from the our principle of the phonetic value ordering in that it followed the principle of KangXi radical-stroke ordering of the characters. Therefore, information system should support ideograph search on precise analysis of materials which consist of korean character (hangul) and ideograph character (hanja). History Information system has been maintaining Hanja(Chinese Character) to Hangul Dictionary, Terminology Dictionary for composition, borrowing, non-ideographic principles, Variant Forms Dictionary, and Recently discovered Chinese Characters List.

Causal relationships of kindergarteners' phonological awareness and processing to their ability to read words was investigated with the participation of 289 4- to 6-year-old children attending three kindergartens in Busan. Results showed gradual growth in reading ability with age. Children performed best in reading words and poorest in reading low frequency letters. They showed continuous development in skills of syllable deletion, phoneme substitution, phoneme insertion, phonological memory and naming. Discontinuous development was found in counting syllables. Longer syllables were difficult to count, and middle syllables of 3 syllable words were hard to delete. Children had poor perception of final consonants of Consonant-Vowel-Consonant syllables. Children's phonological awareness and processing were latent variables strongly related to ability to read words written in Hangul.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the causal relationship of kindergarteners' alphabet knowledge to their ability to read words, in connection with the features of the Korean alphabet 'Hangul'. A total of 289 children aged four to six from three kindergartens in Busan participated in the study. The main results are as follows. To begin with, the participants showed continuous development in the knowledge of consonant names, vowel sounds, the vowel stroke-adding principle, and the alphabet composition principle. Meanwhile, discontinuous development was found in the knowledge of consonant sounds and the consonant stroke-adding principle, which indicated that kindergartners could show differential speed in various sub-skills of literacy development. The kindergartners' naming of consonants developed before their recall of consonant sounds, and the knowledge of consonant sounds had an effect on the knowledge of vowel sounds. Children had difficulty in treating more complicated letters of the alphabet stroke-adding principle test, and eve syllables of the alphabet composition principle test. Most importantly, the children's alphabet knowledge was strongly related to their ability to read words written in Hangul, as kindergarteners with a greater knowledge of alphabet names, sounds, and principles were shown to read words better.

본 연구는 국어의 모든 언어적 특성을 기술하고 이를 실제 형태소 분석에 적용할 수 있도록 다차원 해석 사전을 이용하는 형태소 분석 시스템인 moHANA(Morphological Hangul Analyzer)에 관한 연구이다. moHANA의 해석 사전은 태그정보 사전, 어휘 사전 그리고 문법 사전으로 구성된다. 태그정보 사전은 기존 형태소 해석기의 일차원적인 품사 정보와 달리 어류 태그정보, 형태적 정보, 통사적 정보, 의미적 정보 및 화용 정보의 5 차원 벡터 정보로 작성된다. 어휘 사전은 어휘와 그 어휘가 가질 수 있는 태그정보를 우선 순위에 기반하여 순서열로 가지며, 문법 사전은 특수 문법 연산자를 이용하여 태그정보 사전에 정의된 각각의 태그가 연결 가능한지 여부를 규정하는 문법이 구축되어 있다. 형태소가 가지는 태그정보를 다차원으로 정의하고 이에 따른 문법 규칙의 표현을 통해 보다 자세한 형태소 분석 및 새로운 형태소 태그의 삽입과 삭제의 용이함을 얻을 수 있다.
