Hydrologic pattern under climate change has been paid attention to as one of the most important issues in hydrologic science group. Rainfall and runoff is a key element in the Earth's hydrological cycle, and associated with many different aspects such as water supply, flood prevention and river restoration. In this regard, a main objective of this study is to evaluate design flood using simulation techniques which can consider a full spectrum of uncertainty. Here we utilize a weather state based stochastic multivariate model as conditional probability model for simulating the rainfall field. A major premise of this study is that large scale climatic patterns are a major driver of such persistent year to year changes in rainfall probabilities. Uncertainty analysis in estimating design flood is inevitably needed to examine reliability for the estimated results. With regard to this point, this study applies a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo scheme to the NWS-PC rainfall-runoff model that has been widely used, and a case study is performed in Soyang Dam watershed in Korea. A comprehensive discussion on design flood under climate change is provided.
In this study, specific pollutant releases during the Asian monsoon season were estimated and the information was applied to the non-point pollutant sources management from two forested watersheds of the Soyang Lake. The two watersheds are part of the 2,703 km2 Soyang Lake watershed in the northern region of the Han River. The outlets of the two watersheds were respectively analyzed for continuous water quality concentration and for discharge during various single rainfall events. Statistical power function methods are utilized to compare stream discharge and pollutant flux release during the study period. Based on the monitoring data during the study period, the specific load flux method using simulated discharge was conducted and validated in the two watersheds. The model predictions corresponded well with the measured and calculated pollutant releases. The modeling approach taken in this study was found to be applicable for the two forested watersheds.
Chungju reservoir is a multipurpose dam lake located at the upstream of Nm Han river and known as having the biggest watershed and the second water volume in korea. Conclusions are made as follows. 1. Environmental characteristics of the reservoir appear to be as follows. Chungju reservoir has long hydaulic retention time, 60-160 days. Water column has oxygen depletion zone in hypolimnion. Chungju reservoir is found to be in the midst of eutrophication. Chlorophyll-a and other physical parameters are found to be significantly dependent. 2. Nitrogen to phosphorus ratio was 50-350 for the water samples taken from the reservoir in 1996. It is very important clue for water quality management in relation to phytoplankton growing kinetics. Variations in chlorophyll-a contents appear to be related closely to total phosphorus concentration.
The Anyang stream is one of the Han river in Seoul Metropolitan area. It is 35.1km long, has a basin area of $282.26km^2$ and touches seven cities of Kyounggido and some of Seoul Metropolitan area. The situations of Anyang stream have resulted in severe stream water pollution problems. The purpose of this study were to measure the hydraulic characteristics and water quality, to make the countermeasures to achieve the stream water quality, to suggest the future conditions to improve water quality trough the Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Modal(WASP4). As the result of Anyang stream water quality forecsat, they are follows. Sewerage systems in the watershed of the Anyang stream have to be amended for wrong systemn and constructed in the upstream area of Anyang. The discharge of industrial wastewater has to be throughly controlled from the upstream area of the Anyang stream. Hydrodynamic and Water Quality Model(WASP4) for this study revealed the future water quality of the Anyang stream by computer simulation.
The zooplankton community and environmental factor were investigated on a weekly basis from March to November 2015 in Lake Paldang, Korea. The seasonal succession of zooplankton community structure was influenced by hydraulic and hydrological factors such as inflow, outflow and rainfall. However, the hydraulic retention time in 2015 (16.3 day) was affected by the periods of water shortage that had continued since 2014 and increased substantially compared to 2013 (7.3 day). Therefore, the inflow and outflow discharge were decreased, and the water quality (COD, BOD, TOC, TP, Chl-a) of Lake Paldang (St.1) was the same characteristics as the river type Bukhan river (St.3), compared with the lake type Namhan river (St.2) and Gyeongan stream (St.4). Zooplankton community dominated by rotifers (Keratella cochlearis, Synchaeta oblonga) in spring (March to May). However, Copepod (Nauplius) and Cladoceran (Bosmina longirostris) dominated in St.4. In summer (June to August), there was a few strong rainfall event and the highest number of individuals dominated by Keratella cochlearis (Rotifera) and Difflugia corona (Protozoa) were shown during the study period. In autumn (October to November), the water temperature was decreased with decrease in the total number of individuals showing Nauplius (Copepoda) as the dominant species. As a result of the statistical analysis about zooplankton variation in environmental factors, the continuous periods of water shortage increased the hydraulic retention time and showed different characteristic for each site. St.1, St.3 and St.2, St.4 are shown in the same group (p<0.05), showing the each characteristics of river type and lake type. Therefore, the water quality of catchment area and distribution of zooplankton community would be attributed to hydraulic and hydrological factors.

This study tries to cluster the 795 standard watersheds of Korea Water Resources Unit Map using multivariate statistical analysis technique. The 30 factors of watershed characteristics related to topography, stream, meteorology, soil, land cover and hydrology were selected for comprehensive analysis. From the factor analysis, 16 representative factors were selected. The significant factors in order were the pedological feature, scale and geological location and meteorological and hydrological features of the watershed. As a next step, the 73 gauged watersheds were selected for cluster analysis. They are scattered properly to the whole country and the discharge data were within a confidential level. Based on the 73 watersheds, the other ungaged watersheds were clustered by applying the 16 factors and calculating Euclidian distances. The clustering results showed that the similarity between standard watersheds within the same river basin were 87%, 69%, 41%, 52%, and 27% for Han, Nakdong, Geum, Seomjin, and Yeongsan river basins respectively.

The TPLMs is a system to manage the total amount of pollutants discharged from the watershed in order to achieve the target water quality of the river. In this process, the pollutant load can be classified into generation, discharge and delivery load. When using equation 2, the discharge coefficient should be 1. In case of using equation 3, it is considered that the discharge coefficient defined in the Technical Guideline should be applied. The delivery load is calculated as the product of the discharge load and the delivery ratio, and the delivery ratio is defined as the rate at which the pollutant discharged from the watershed reaches a specific point in the stream. In this study, the delivery ratio estimation method proposed by Hwang (2016) was applied to the Yonggang watershed in the Nakdong river. And the input data of QUALKO2 model was generated by using the estimated delivery ratio (equation 3) and the validation study was conducted by comparing with DRave (equation 2). As a result of the study, it is possible to use both the equation 2 and the equation 3, but it is necessary to change the methodology according to the application of the discharge coefficient.
SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool)-MODFLOW (Modular Groundwater Flow) is a coupled model that linking semi-distributed watershed hydrology with fully-distributed groundwater behavior. In this study, the groundwater simulation results of SWAT and SWAT-MODFLOW were compared for Bokhacheon watershed in Namhan river basin. The models were calibrated and validated with 9 years (2009~2017) daily streamflow (Q) data of Heungcheon (HC) water level gauge station and the daily groundwater level observation data of Yulheon (YH). For SWAT, the groundwater parameters of GW_DELAY, GWQMN, and ALPHA_BF affecting baseflow and recession phase were treated. The SWAT results showed the coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.7 and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiencies (NESQ, NSEinQ) for Q and 1/Q with 0.73 and -0.1 respectively. For SWAT-MODFLOW, the spatio-temporal aquifer hydraulic conductivity (K, m/day), specific storage (Ss, 1/m), and specific yield (Sy) were applied. The SWAT-MODFLOW showed R2, NSEQ, and NSEinQ of 0.69, 0.74, and 0.51 respectively. The SWAT-MODFLOW considerably enhanced the low flow simulation with the help of aquifer physical information. The total streamflow of SWAT and SWAT-MODFLOW were 718.6 mm and 854.9 mm occupying baseflow of 342.9 mm and 423.5 mm respectively.
In this study, we analysed hydrologic variability in quantity and onset of annual maximum flow and low flow by impacts of the different phases of ENSO (El Ni$\tilde{n}$o Southern Oscillation) over the Han River Basin. The results show that annual maximum flow has increased statistically significant about 48.3% of all over the watershed. The onset of annual maximum flow was delayed in the west of the Han River basins and in the east of the basins was likely to be rapid onset. Also, this study shows that 7-day low flow was deceased statistically significant about 26.0% of the total area in the Han River Basin, and onset of 7-day low flow tends to be faster in the upper-middle basins of the Han River. The onset of annual maximum flow shows similar pattern during the CT (Cold tongue)/WP (Warm-pool) El Ni$\tilde{n}$o years, but annual maximum flow appeared less in 89.0% of all basins during the CT El Ni$\tilde{n}$o years. In addition, the onset of 7-day low flow tended to be faster about 17 days on average during the WP El Ni$\tilde{n}$o years, and 72.7% of the basins show significant increase during the CT El Ni$\tilde{n}$o years. Consequently, it was found that the different phases of CT/WP El Ni$\tilde{n}$o have effects on sensitivity to variability in quantity and onset of water resources over the Han River Basin. We expect that the present diagnostic study on hydrological variability during different phases of ENSO will provide useful information for long-term prediction and water resources management.

A drought-flood abrupt alternation event is an overlapping extreme event that is harder to cope with than a single event of drought and flood. It is also expected to have a significant adverse impact on ecosystems as well as industries and agriculture. However, there has not yet been a comprehensive study that characterizes the drought-flood abrupt alternation events in Korea. Therefore, this study employed a standard weighted average precipitation (SWAP) index, which is efficient to analyze not only individual events of drought and flood but also the drought-flood abrupt alternation events considering various time scales. The SWAP standardized the weighted average precipitation (WAP) by adding temporal weights to the precipitation. The SWAP indices were calculated for middle-sized watersheds of the Han River basin using the area average precipitation during 1966 and 2018. The severity K was calculated to represent the relative regional severity considering normal rainfalls, and used to characterize the drought-flood abrupt alternation in the study areas. The results indicated that 20 of the 30 middle-sized watersheds in the Han River basin were confirmed to increase the severity of drought-flood abrupt alternation over time. Considering the frequency and severity of drought-flood abrupt alternation events in each watershed, vulnerable areas and dangerous areas due to drought-flood abrupt alternation were identified, for example, the Upstream Namhan River (#1001).
