  • The ultrastructure of damaged hair shaft from blow-drying at typical temperature $40{\sim}170^{\circ}C$ for daily beautiful face have been investigated by using transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope. When we used to hair dryer for a long time in our everyday life, the following morphological alternations were found in hair. First, the partial of scales in outer cuticle were detached simultaneously with separation of intercellular membrane complex of cuticle cells. Then hair broke cuticle off and exposed to cortex. Secondly, the cortical cell in the cortex was fissured into its macrofibril. The melanin granules were scattered between macrofibrils. As a result, I confirmed that blow-drying removed the hair's bonded water and made hard on hair which lost elasticity. After all, hair showed irregular, rough surface and vanished its luster.

  • Cortex Mori radicis has been used as a components of antidiabetics, antiasthma and diuresis in Oriental Medicine. This experiment examined the effect of an extracts, obtained from the acetone(CM-A) and aqueous(CM-W) extracts of Cortex Mori radicis, on hair growing activity of the C57BL/6N mice after topical application to skin. We investigated the number of hair follicle and mast cells, and changes of subpopulation of splenocytes and thymocytes in skin for 16 day. The results were as follows : The Hair growing effect in experimental groups was more increased in 85%(CM-A) and 90%(CM-W) than control group(10%) in hair depilated area. The number of hair follicle in experimental groups(CM-A and CM-W) was more increased than control group. Splenic B/T lymphocytes of CM-A group were decreased compare to control group. CD4/CD8 positive TH cells in splenic T lymphocytes of CM-W group were increased compare to control group. These results suggest that CM-A and CM-W may be used in treatment of alopecia areata.

  • The physico-chemical characteristics by bleaching treatments were assessed by several instrumental analyses such as surface morphology, chemical structural change, color change as well as tensile strength. The change of morphological characteristic was observed through scanning electron microscope(SEM). The observation of the fine structure on hair surface by SEM showed the bleached hair had much damaged to hair cuticle, and some of cuticle surface were worn away. To investigate the chemical structural changes in hair keratin, the cross-sections of hair samples were directly analysed using Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy(FT-IRM). The results showed the cysteic acid S=O band intensity was distinctively increased by performing the bleaching treatment. The cleavage of cystine was appeared to proceed primarily through the sulfur-sulfur (-S-S-) fission whereby cysteic acid was formed as a principal oxidation products. The distribution of amide I band in hair keratin was determined by attenuated total reflectance(ATR) FT-IR mapping image. The results showed that the outer side of hair cortex was more damaged than the inner side of the hair cortex. Also, during chemical bleaching of the hair with alkaline peroxide, the hair was turned to reddish yellow due to the oxidative degradation of eumelanin. This means the eumelanin is more unstable than pheomelanin in chemical oxidation. With bleaching, the tensile strength was also reduced as a results of the chemical oxidation.

  • The preservative condition and ultrastructure on the mummified hair collected from newly found female mummy in Paju, were investigated by using scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The female mummy was found in september, 2002 during the traditional reburial process for the buried ones. The hair of 16th century mummy showed very intact appearances during observation with electron microscope. And the structures of the cortex, medulla and cuticle were well preserved. The cuticle layer was easily discernable, which are composed of six to seven cuticular cells. Each cuticular cells surrounded and thus seperated from its neighbors by intercellular membrane complex. In the cortex, many macrofibrils and some melanin granules between them were observed. We observed well preserved rod form macrofibrils running parallel along the direction of hair shaft. Especially, melanin granules were aggregated in the cortex which was adjacent to the cuticlu layer. As to the cause for the well-preservation of 440 year old hair sample, the presence of surface coat on the hair, which are composed of various materials. As calcium was included in the surface coat in Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), the hardening process of the surface coat by calcium might inhibit the water or microorganism infiltration into the hair.

  • The morphological changes in normal and weathering hair shafts of the human scalp were investigated by using the transmission and scanning electron microscopes. The hair shaft composed of cuticular layer, cortex and medula. The surface of normal hairs are smooth and covered by imbricated cuticular scales. The cuticular layer consists of five to seven cuticle cells. These cells, which are flat and thin, measuring about $100{\mu}m$ long and $0.4{\mu}m$ thick, appears intercellular membrane complex in diameter 25 nm. The cortex composed of melanin granules and cornified cells, which multicomponent concentric microfibrils in diameter about 8 nm give rise to macrofibrils in diameter $0.5{\mu}m$ to $0.8{\mu}m$ encased in limiting membrane. The melanin granules are spherical shaped about $0.5{\mu}m$ in size and scattered between macrofibrils. The medulla in the normal hairs are $16{\mu}m$ in diameter centrally region of cortex. Normal hair shafts undergo progressive degenerative changes due to a variety of environmental insults. In the initial weathering process of hair, the cuticular scales became irregularly raised and broken, and then cuticle cells formed cytoplasmic vacuolation, following dissociated intercellular membrane complex, ultimately entirely lost and nuded cortex. Occasionally, transverse fissures were seen at hair shafts indicating that the hairs were deteriorated. Complete removal of the cuticular layer in the heavily damaged cortex portions appeared splitting of the cortical cell into its macrofibrils and scattering of melanin granules.

  • We investigated the burning process of the virgin hair and straight permed hair using thermal analyser and scanning electron microscopy. After the thermal analysis, we found that weight started to change from $100^{\circ}C$. Whereas straight permed hair has weight decrease rate of 2.6% higher than the virgin hair till $200^{\circ}C$, those were 64.9% and 64.4% for the virgin and straight permed hairs, respectively at $300^{\circ}C$. At $400^{\circ}C$, the weight decrease rate of the virgin hair became lower than the other; they were 32.3% and 33.4% for the virgin and straight permed hairs, respectively. Final values were 25.4% and 28.3% at $500^{\circ}C$, which showed that final weight of burnt straight permed hair was higher than the virgin hair by about 2.9%. In terms of morphological changes, the hair started to melt together with adjacent ones by burning till $300^{\circ}C$. The medulla and cortex were melt and the inside was empty like bamboo. The hair burnt till $500^{\circ}C$ was entirely carbonized and found as a clod. We found many blowholes at the surface of the hair clump.

  • As you see, there's no difference of the hair's before and after Magic straight permanent on the example A's hair's thickness, the rate of the tense and the C's rate of the tense, but we can find that there are a lot of difference of the A's strength of the hair, the B's hair's thickness, the strength of the hair, the rate of the tense, the C's hair's thickness, and the strength of the hair on the before and after the Magic straight permanent. That is to say, there are more damage on the condition of normal hair than the one after the Magic straight permanent. On the change of the hair's physical character, before the permanent, the hair's schedule was regular and had the healthy head skin of clear mutual boundary But after the Magic straight permanent wave, the hair's schedule changed to unregural, had unclear mutual boundary of the head skin and the schedule was taken off so the cortex showed up and so on, every condition of the damage was very heavy. On the effect of the treatment, even though it gaves the worth condition of the hair, after the Magic straight permanent formally the change of the hair gives the beautiful straight.
