  • Laboratory studies have revealed that naturally transformable bacteria develop competence under in situ conditions. Thus, the occurrence of competent bacteria in the environment can be considered as a certainty The persistence of free DNA in natural habitats is influenced by nucleolytic degradation and protection from degradation by adsorption to minerals. Although DNA seeded into natural environment was hydrolysed at substantial rates, but was still detectable at low levels after even several weeks. Compared to the number of laboratory based studies, only a few data have been published dealing with transformation of bacteria in the field. Recently, the potential transfer of recombinant DNA (rDNA) from deliberately or accidentally released bacteria to indigenous microbes has raised biosafety issues, since the persistence of rDNA becomes independent of the survival of its original host and leads to unpredictable, long-term ecological effects. The aim of the present review is to summarise recent literature on horizontal gene transfer (HGT) by transformation among bacteria in both soil and aquatic habitat and special emphasis is placed on recent reports which have addressed HGT among bacteria in the field. • These studies were carried out to examine the developmental process of galls caused by aphids in Rhus gavanica and the effects of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and ${\alpha}$-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) on the tannin accumulation in the callus induced from that galls. The results are follows. The development of fist-shaped galls has begun at the beginning of June earlier than the case of finger-shaped galls, and also, the growth of fist-shaped galls has last to September longer than the period of finger-shaped galls. These results indicate that the life cycle and feeding activity of the aphids inhabited in fist-shaped galls were longer and mire active than the case of the aphids inhabited in finger-shaped galls. Tannin contents of fist-shaped galls revealed about 60${\sim}70%$ of total dry weights during the whole growth periods, however, the contents in finger-shaped galls were under 10% at the maximum value. These facts mean that finger-shaped galls seem to be as a habitat of aphids rather than as a major source of tannin such as fist-shaped galls. The growth of callus induced from fist-shaped galls was the most effective in the plot of $10^{-5}$ mole IAA, but the tannin accumulation in callus growth was not even caused in any plots of IAA treatments as wells as in any NAA plots. These results considered that the tannin accumulation in fist-shaped galls may be caused only in specific relation between host plant and life cycle of aphids.

  • 1. This paper deals with the natural mortality of the early young bivalve, Meretrix lusoria, (less than 13mm in shell length) and the perforations bored in the bivalve by bering snails, Neverita didyma and Natica severa. The investigation was carried out in the Kunsan area and in the laboratory from May to October of 1968. 2. The natural mortality of the field population during this period was $12.1\%$ and among this number $38.1\%$ were drilled by boring snails. 3. The common species of the Naticid gastropods, boring snails-Neverite didyma and Natice severa - are encountered in the habitat of M. lusoria. The perforations drilled by these species were broadly bevelled. 4. The location of the holes on the valves varied widely, while most of holes on the valves were located at a relatively definite umbo position. 5. The inner and outer diameters of the holes varied in proportion to the shell length of the clam; each ranging in shell length from 1 to 3mm, 3 to 6mm, and 6 to 13mm, and the outer diameters were 0.4-0.5mm, 0.7-0.9mm and 0.9-1.2mm. On the other hand, the ratio of the inner and outer diameters differed in proportion to the shell length of the clam. 6. Predation rates of Neverita didyma was much greater at night than during the day at room temperature. An average of 1.7 young clams was drilled and consumed, per snail, per day. This rate was greater than that of the Natica severa. 7 Predation rates varied in proportion to the shell length of the clam and the shell height of the snails.

  • By analyzing specific plant distributions and physicochemical characteristics of topsoil in a reclaimed dredging area, baseline data was found of natural landscape planting sites, and developing dredged fill ground. The reclaimed dredging area is five different stands (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) which were examined in this research. They are located from sea level to 15 meters in altitude and exhibited typical characteristics of the salt marsh in Gwangyang Bay. Species with high constancy in the vegetation on the reclaimed soil were classified into four stages. A total of 12, 15, 22, 27 and 35 different plant species were found and also increased in stands 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively. Moving from stand 1 to 5, halophytes decreased and non-halophytes increased. Desalination at each stage of the reclaimed dredging area was a driving force affecting the performance and distribution of halophytes and non-halophytes. Overall, 35 quadrats of soil were selected and analyzed for specific physicochemical characteristics of topsoil between O${\sim}$20cm. Results of the physicochemical analysis such as altitude, slope, vegetation and kind of reclaimed dredging soil, exhibited irregular increases or decreases. As survey areas moved from stand 1 to 4, desalination areas, soil acidity, electric conductions, content of salinity, available phosphorus, potassium, chlorine, calcium, and magnesium indicated decreasing patterns; however, total nitrogen, silt, and clay content increased. Cluster analysis and PCA by environmental data within the stands clearly showed five distinct vegetation patterns on the tested reclaimed area. These results indicate that the differences of performance and distribution of vegetation are due to the SAR in the reclaimed soil and related to the natural survival strategy at the given hostile habitat.

  • This study presented a plan for the establishment of conservation areas and the ecological management of those areas in the stream based on the Marxan with Zones Program for a Jungrangcheon Stream in downtown Seoul. The application of the Marxan with Zones Program included the stage of planning unit setting, application of mapping indices, numerical correction for repetitive analysis, creation of scenario-specific optimizations through analysis, analysis of sensitivity by scenario, review, and the selection of optimal plans among the scenarios considered. As a result of the establishment of a conservation area near Jungrangcheon Stream, which has several watershed areas, including an upper-middle-class wildlife protection zone, which was previously designated and managed as a conservation area, and the migratory protection zone downstream of Jungrangcheon Stream were designated as key conservation areas. A number of wild birds were observed in the upper reaches of Jungrangcheon Stream, adjacent to the forests of Suraksan Mountain and Dobongsan Mountain. The downstream area is a habitat for migratory birds that travel along the stream and the adjacent river ecosystem, including the Hangang River confluence and Cheonggyecheon Stream confluence. Therefore, the upper and lower reaches of Jungrangcheon Stream are connected to forest ecosystems such as Dobongsan Mountain, Suraksan Mountain, and Eungbongsan Mountain, as well as urban green area and river ecosystems in the basin area, which influence the establishment of conservation areas. This study verified the establishment and evaluation of existing conservation areas through the Marxan with Zones Program during the verification of the conservation areas and was presented as in-stream management and basin management method to manage the basin areas derived from core conservation areas determined through the program.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the breeding bird communities between natural and fired forests in Verchneussuriisky Research Forest ($44^{\circ}$ 02' N, $134^{\circ}$ 10' E) Institute of Biology and Soil Science, Far-East Branch, Russian Academy of Science at Ussuri, Russia from 7 to 11 June 2008. Total 37 species of birds were recorded in both study sites. Luscinia cyane, Urosphena squameiceps, and Emberiza tristrami were most dominant species. In natural forest, 115 individuals of 32 species were observed and bird species diversity (H') was 3.13. Sixty two individuals of 29 species were recorded and bird species diversity was 3.12 in fired forest. Bush and Canopy nesting guilds were higher in natural forest than in fired forest. But hole nesting guild was higher in fired forest. In foraging guilds, canopy foraging guild was most dominant in both study site. Air and bush foraging guilds were higher in natural forest. The differences of bird communities would be caused by differences of habitat conditions between study sites.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the current distribution area of Robinia pseudoacacia habitat and to estimate its stand yield as well as its carbon stocks. In order to do so, the area of R. pseudoacacia distribution is obtained based on the large-scaled forest type map (1:5,000). Also, Weibull diameter distribution model is used to predict the yield of R. pseudoacacia stands. In addition, carbon emission factor is applied to calculate carbon stocks and removals. To obtain the stand yield of R. pseudoacacia, we developed estimation equation considering growth factors of the stand, e.g. mean diameter, the basal area, maximum and minimun diameter and etc. and tested it to ensure accuracy. Consequently, estimation equation derived from all growth factors have shown significance that could also be used for analysis. Site index was also established to determine the productivity of the forestland that later turned out to be ranging from 16 to 22. Based on these results, stand yield tables were drawn up. R. pseudoacacia is widely distributed in inland areas of Gyeongsang, Chungcheong and Gyeonggi provinces which covers total area of 26,770 ha. And when it is converted into carbon stocks, it amounts to 2,517,598tC with annual carbon uptake of 3.76tC/ha which is comparable to Querqus species that is known to storer large amounts of carbon. Therefore, R. pseudoacacia is also expected to serve as a viable carbon pool that would contribute to the mitigation of climate change. Furthermore, stand yield tables, an outcome of this survey would assist not only in proper management but also in sustainable management policy of R. pseudoacacia.

  • One-chambered sediment cells with a variety of anodic electrodes were tested for generation of electricity. Material used for anodes was iron, brass, zinc/iron, copper and graphite felt which was used for a common cathode. The estuarine sediment served as supplier of oxidants or electron-producing microbial habitat which evoked electrons via fast metal corrosion reactions or a complicated microbial electron transfer mechanism, respectively. Maximum power density and current density were found to be $6.90\;W/m^2$ (iron/zinc) and $7.76\;A/m^2$ (iron), respectively. Interestingly, copper wrapped with carbon cloth produced better electric performance than copper only, by 60%, possibly because the cloth not only prevented rapid corrosion on the copper surface by some degrees, but also helped growing some electron-emitting microbes on its surface. At anodes oxidation reduction potential(ORP) was kept to be stationary over time except at the very initial period. The pH reduction in the copper and copper/carbon electrodes could be a sign of organic acid production due to a chemical change in the sediment. The simple estimation of interfacial, electrical resistances of electrodes and electrolyte in the sediment cell that a key to the electricity generation should be in how to control corrosion rate or microbial electron transfer activity.

  • The therapeutic effects of praziquantel on Fibricola seoulensis infection were studied by experimental infection of albino rats with the metacercariae obtained from the snakes. Total 51 albino rats were infected each with 500 or 1, 000 meta cercariae in number through intragastric tubes. One or four weeks la er the rats were treated with 1, 5, 10 or 20 mg/kg single dose of prazipuantel and sacrificed after 3 days or 10-120 minutes to search for the worms in their small intestine. The worm recovery rate at 3 days after the treatment was 10.7 % in 1 mg/kg dose group and o. 03~0.2% in 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg groups, while that of untreated control was 51. 3%. The minimum effective dose to treat F. seoulensis infection in the rats is considered to be 5 mg/kg in single dose. By observing the distribution pattern of worms in the small intestine after the treatment, dislodgement of the worms from the duodenum, their normal habitat, to the lower portions was recognizable within as early as 10 minutes. The majority of worms was found to have descended to the ileo-caecal portion after 60-120 minutes.
