  • Heracles has been adored as one of the bravest mythical heroes all times and all places because it was thought that he protected his people and lands from invasion, plunder, or enslavement. However, I argue Heracles should be criticized as a war machine of violence and murder. War is homicide itself, which means humans kill humans, unlike other violent and sensual animals such as dogs, apes or pigs. It is ironically ambivalent to celebrate an excellent hero in homicide in this age of nuclear weapons. This irony leads to S. Freud's 'Death instinct' or Malcolm Potts's 'war genes'. Unlike Freud, Malcolm Potts insists that humans' war genes can be changed into peace genes because they were just remains of Stone Age. According to Apollodoros' myth or Euripides' tragedies, he was mad enough to kill his own sons and wife after he had murdered the king Lycos in Thebes. Though Rene Girard says that his madness was derived from contagion of violence and blood, I think that his madness came from horrible experiences of cruel wars as well as Hera's maltreatment in his childhood. It will be demonstrated to be war neurosis, that is, PTSD(Posttraumatic Stress Disorder). In a different way from the modern media in which Heracles is being glorified as a purest macho and war machine, his old myths show the ambivalence of his violence and murder, and his daily misfortunes owing to his madness. In this sense, his myth is a kind of warning to the humans not to kill each other, or to stop wars.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of educare teachers' science education knowledge and attitudes towards science on science teaching anxiety. 259 teachers of young children were recruited from 19 daycare centers and the data were analyzed through frequency, percentage, Pearson's correlations using PASW 18.0 and structure equation modeling using AMOS 7.0. The findings are as follows. First, educare teachers showed more than median scores in all science education knowledge, attitude towards science and science teaching anxiety. Second, in total 57% of the variance in teachers' science teaching anxiety was accounted for by teachers' science education knowledge and attitude towards science. This result implied that teachers' science education knowledge and attitude towards science should be improved in order to reduce teachers' science teaching anxiety.

  • This study was to focus on the effect on parenting stress of children's developmental characteristics, emotionality and mother's self-efficacy, thus to set the structure equation model. Analysis data was collected from 2078 newborns to be involved Korea Children's Panel 1st year. The valuables were all measured by mothers. The main results of this study were as follows. First, children's developmental characteristics and emotionality had an effect on parenting stress directly. A lower level of children's developmental characteristics and a higher level of children's emotionality indicated a higher maternal parenting stress level. Second, mother's self-efficacy also had an effect on parenting stress level. A lower level of maternal self-efficacy demonstrated a higher level of maternal parenting stress level. Third, children's developmental characteristics and emotionality had an effect on parenting stress indirectly through mother's self-efficacy. Mother's self-efficacy which was affected by children's developmental characteristics and emotionality aggravated mother's parenting stress. The implication of these findings are also discussed.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of helminths parasites from collected fecal samples of 410 feral pigeons (Columba livia) in 3 different areas of Gwangjin-gu, Seongdong-gu and Dongdaemun-gu in Seoul from December, 2011 to July, 2012 in Korea. The fecal samples were examined through by the centrifugation method using formalin-ether solution. The overall prevalence of parasites in the pigeons was 29.27% (120/410). Two nematodes (Tetrameres spp. and Capillaria spp.) and one protozoa (Eimeria spp.) were identified. In the case of nematodes, Tetrameres spp. dominated numerically (58, 14.15%), followed by Capillaria spp. (10, 2.44%) and oocysts of Eimeria spp. were detected in 78 cases (19.02%). This investigation introduces the result of examination on the prevalence of parasites in feral pigeons from some areas in Seoul for the first time.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in optimism, self-esteem and self-leadership according to age, monthly income, and teaching experiences of multicultural family home-visit instructors and the influence of optimism and self-esteem on self-leadership. 668 home-visit instructors participated in the online survey from 140 multicultural family support centers in Seoul, 6 metropolitan cities, 9 provinces, and other cities and counties. Data were analyzed through frequence, percentages, Pearson's correlations, One-way ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ post-hoc test, and stepwise multi-regression using SPSS 21.0. The main findings are as follows. First, there were significant differences in optimism and self-esteem according to age and monthly income. Second, there were significant differences in self-leadership according to age and home-visit teaching experiences. Third, the stepwise multiple regression model showed that optimism, self-esteem and the individual variables had an influence on the self-leadership of home-visit instructor's self-expectation. These results suggest that self-esteem and optimism are important precursors of self-leadership and self-leadership training based on self-esteem and optimism is necessary for self-leadership enhancement of home-visit instructors.

  • This study explores the Subseasonal-to-Seasonal (S2S) prediction skills of the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitude geopotential height in the Global Seasonal forecasting model version 5 (GloSea5) hindcast experiment. The prediction skills are quantitatively verified for the period of 1991~2010 by computing the Anomaly Correlation Coefficient (ACC) and Mean Square Skill Score (MSSS). GloSea5 model shows a higher prediction skill in winter than in summer at most levels regardless of verification methods. Quantitatively, the prediction limit diagnosed with ACC skill of 500 hPa geopotential height, averaged over $30^{\circ}N{\sim}90^{\circ}N$, is 11.0 days in winter, but only 9.1 days in summer. These prediction limits are primarily set by the planetary-scale eddy phase errors. The stratospheric prediction skills are typically higher than the tropospheric skills except in the summer upper-stratosphere where prediction skills are substantially lower than upper-troposphere. The lack of the summer upper-stratospheric prediction skill is caused by zonal mean error, perhaps strongly related to model mean bias in the stratosphere.

  • This study examined the multicultural efficacy and job satisfaction of multicultural family visiting instructors. The subjects were 750 visiting instructors from 140 multicultural family support centers in Seoul, 6 metropolitan cities, 9 provinces, and other cities and counties. Data were analyzed through frequency, percentages, Pearson's correlations, One-way ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ post-hoc test, independent t-test, and stepwise multi-regression using PASW 18.0. The findings are as follows. First, there were statistically significant differences in all subscales of multicultural efficacy according to the teaching experiences of the multicultural family visiting instructors. On the other hand, there was a statistically significant difference only in trust in the relationships with multicultural families according to the teaching experiences of the multicultural family visiting instructors. Meanwhile, the independent t-test showed that there was a significant difference only in satisfaction regarding treatment and salary according to the assigned work. Second, the stepwise multi-regression models revealed that three subscales (job performance, trust in the relationships with the multicultural families, job aptitude) of job satisfaction were influenced by multicultural efficacy according to both the teaching experiences and assigned work, but this was no the case for satisfaction about treatment and salary. Regardles of teaching experience or assigned work, teaching efficacy in multicultural efficacy affected all subscales of job satisfaction except for satisfaction about treatment and salary. The implications for future studies are also discussed.

  • Composite column design is strongly influenced by the computation of the critical buckling load, which is very sensitive to the effective flexural stiffness (EI) of the column. Because of this, the behaviour of a composite column under lateral loading and its response to deflection is largely determined by the EI of the member. Thus, prediction models used for composite member design should accurately mirror this behaviour. However, EI varies due to several design parameters, and the implementation of high-strength materials, which are not considered by the current composite design codes of practice. The reliability of the design methods from six codes of practice (i.e., AS 5100, AS/NZS 2327, Eurocode 4, AISC 2010, ACI 318, and AIJ) for composite columns is studied in this paper. Also, the reliability of these codes of practice against a serviceability limit state criterion are estimated based on the combined use of the test-based statistical procedure proposed by Johnson and Huang (1997) and Monte Carlo simulations. The composite columns database includes 100 tests of circular concrete-filled tubes, rectangular concrete-filled tubes, and concrete-encased steel composite columns. A summary of the reliability analysis procedure and the evaluated reliability indices are provided. The reasons for the reliability analysis results are discussed to provide useful insight and supporting information for a possible revision of available codes of practice.

  • Lifeline Damages induced by earthquake loading brings not only a structure damage but the communication problems by the interruption of various energy utilities such as electric power, gas, and water resources. Earthquake loss estimation systems in USA and Japan, called as HAZUS (Hazard in US) and HERAS (Hazards Estimation and Restoration Aid System), respectively, have been established for the purpose of efficient responding to the earthquake hazard. Sufficient damage records are required to establish these systems. However, there are insufficient data set of damage records obtained from previous earthquakes in Korea. In this study, according to the construction specifications of the pipelines in both Korea and USA, the behavior of both ductile and brittle pipelines embedded in dense sand overlying various soils, such as clay, sand, and gravel were examined with respect to the pipeline characteristics under various earthquake loadings. The applicability of pipeline damage prediction used in HAZUS program to Korea has been investigated.

  • This study evaluates the prediction skills of stratospheric polar vortex intensification events (VIEs) in Global Seasonal Forecasting System (GloSea5) model, an operational subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction model of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The results show that the prediction limits of VIEs, diagnosed with anomaly correlation coefficient (ACC) and mean squared skill score (MSSS), are 13.6 days and 18.5 days, respectively. These prediction limits are mainly determined by the eddy error, especially the large-scale eddy phase error from the eddies with the zonal wavenumber 1. This might imply that better prediction skills for VIEs can be obtained by improving the model performance in simulating the phase of planetary scale eddy. The stratospheric prediction skills, on the other hand, tend to not affect the tropospheric prediction skills in the analyzed cases. This result may indicate that stratosphere-troposphere dynamic coupling associated with VIEs might not be well predicted by GloSea5 model. However, it is possible that the coupling process, even if well predicted by the model, cannot be recognized by monotonic analyses, because intrinsic modes in the troposphere often have larger variability compared to the stratospheric impact.
