  • Background: Falls are a common and serious problem in the elderly population. Muscle strength and balance are important factors in the prevention of falls. The Y-balance test (YBT) is used to assess dynamic postural control and shows excellent test-retest reliability. However, no studies have examined the relationship between lower-limb strength and YBT scores in elderly women. Objects: This study aimed to examine the relationship between lower-limb strength and YBT scores in elderly women. Methods: Thirty community-dwelling elderly women participated in the study. Lower-limb strength including hip flexor, hip extensor, hip abductor (HAB), hip adductor (HAD), knee flexor, knee extensor, ankle dorsiflexor, and ankle plantar flexor (PF) muscles was examined using a smart KEMA strength sensor (KOREATECH Inc.), and the YBT was used to assess dynamic balance. Relationship between lower-limb strength and YBT was demonstrated using a Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: HAB strength (r = 0.388, p < 0.05), HAD strength (r = 0.362, p < 0.05), and ankle PF strength (r = 0.391, p < 0.05) positively correlated with the YBT-anterior direction distance. Ankle PF strength was positively correlated with the YBT-posteromedial direction distance (r = 0.396, p < 0.05) and composite score (r = 0.376, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that HAB, HAD, and ankle PF strengths should be considered for dynamic postural control in elderly women.

  • Periodically, harmful algal blooms (HABs) have occurred, with impacts on various areas including public health, tourism, and aquatic ecosystems, especially aquacultured and caged fisheries. To prevent or manage invasions of HABs into fish farms on an emergency basis, many methods have been proposed. Frequently over the past 30 years in coastal countries, treatments of clay and clay mixed with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and chitosan have been tested for HAB-removal effectiveness in both the laboratory and the field. In Korea, yellow loess clay (hwangto) has been dispersed using electrolytic clay dispensers, both to decrease the amount of yellow loess clay's usage in containers and enhance HAB-removal efficiency. However, this emergency method has limitations, among which is the requirement for more effective controlling agents for field applications. Thus, in this paper, we review technologies for clay-based red tides prevention and control and their limitations, and, further, introduce next-generation algicidal technologies for the emergency protection of fish farms.

  • The development of worldwide harmful algal blooms(HAB) is a serious problem for public health and fisheries industries. To evaluate the algicidal impact on the HAB species, algicide thiazolidinedione derivative (TD49) and yellow clay were examined, which is focus on assess the algicidal effects and inhibition to photosynthesis of HAB species. To obtain the detailed information, we analyzed the viability of target species related to activity Chl. a, photosynthetic efficiency($F_v/F_m$), and electron transport rate(ETR). Culture experiment was conducted to evaluate the algicidal effects of three harmful species(raphidophyceae Heterosigma akashiwo, Chattonella marina, and dinophyceae Heterocapsa circularisquama) and one non-harmful species (cryptophyceae Rhodomonas salina). Our experiments revealed that three HAB species were easily destroyed of the cell walls after TD49 dosing. Also, they had significantly reducing values of active Chl. a, $F_v/F_m$, and ETR, due to the damage of photosystem II by inter-cellular disturbance. As a result, the algicidal effect(%) for the three HABs were as follows, in the order of greatest to the least: H. circularisquama> C. marina> H. akashiwo. However, the algicidal effect for yellow clay remained to be <30% (p>0.01), implying that it may not have damaged the photosystem II. On the other hand, non-HAB R. salina was promoted at both TD49 and yellow clay treatments. Our results demonstrated that the TD49 is a good agent for the control of HABs H. akashiwo, C. marina, and H. circularisquama, whereas the yellow clay would not be suitable for the field application based on our experimental results.

  • Objectives : The effects of cotreatment of adriamycin and ethanol extract of herb (Palgin-tang hab Hwajuck-hwan a traditional medicine for cancer treatment in oriental medicine) on the induction of apoptotic cell death were investigated in human liver origin cell lines, Chang. Methods : Chang(ATCC) liver cells were cultured in RPMI-1640(Gibco SRL Co, Gaithersburg, MD) badge including 10% fetal bovine serum. Chang liver cells were treated with various concentrations(from 10 to $0.16{\mu}l$) of adriamycin and herb extract(from 500 to $31.25{\mu}l$) After 48h later, the cells were tested for viability by Crystal violet staining assay. Adriamycin and Herb extract induced ladder pattern of DNA fragmentation in Chang cells. Genomic DNA was isolated and separated on 1.5% agarose gels. The DNA was stained with ethidium bromide and visualized under UV light. Results : The death of Chang cells was synergistically induced by the cotreatment of adriamycin and ethanol extract of herb. In addition, the cotreatment-induced cell death of Chang cells was mediated by apoptotic death signal processes. The phosphotransferase activity of JNK1 remained in a basal level in Chang cells which was treated individually with the adriamycin and ethanol extract of herb. However, it was markedly increased in Chang cells which was cotreated with adriamycin and ethanol extract of herb. In addition, the expression of Fas and FasL was markedly induced by the cotreatment of adriamycin and herb extract. For a while, the expression of Sax was a eminently increased by the ethanol extract of herb. However, Scl2 expression was not affected by the individual or cotreatment of adriamycin and herb extract. Conclusions : our results suggest that the cotreatment of adriamycin aM ethanol extract of herb induces synergistic apoptotis of human liver origin Chang cells via the upregulation of JNK, Fas, FasL and Bax.

  • This review covers current developments in molecular-based studies of the structure and function of carboxylesterases. To allay the confusion of the classic classification of carboxylesterase isozymes, we have proposed a novel nomenclature and classification of mammalian carboxylesterases on the basis of molecular properties. In addition, mechanisms of regulation of gene expression of carboxylesterases by xenobiotics, and involvement of carboxylesterase in drug metabolism are also described.

  • Polyimides have been investigated extensively and used widely over the past three decades because of their high performance properties such as excellent thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. Polyimides are difficult to be processed because of the aromatic moieties, imide group, and insoluble nature in most organic solvents. The soluble polyimides were synthesized from 2,2,-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane (BAPAF) and 3,3,-diamino-4,4-dihydroxybyphenyl (HAB) as aromatic diamines and 4,4-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic dianhydride (6FDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 4,4-oxydiphthalic dianhydride (OPDA), 3,3,4,4-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 3,3,4,4-diphenylsulfone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (DSDA) as aromatic dianhydrides. The polyimides were characterized by NMR, FR-IR, TGA and the dielectric constant of the obtained polyimides was calculated from storage of electro-capacity. A novel photosensitive polyimide was synthesized by the reaction of polyimide, containing hydroxyl group and methacryloyl chloride using triethylamine. The good micro-pattern was obtained with photosensitive polyimide from the photolithographic technique.

  • Harmful algal blooms (HABs), commonly called red tides, are caused by some toxic phytoplanktons, and have made massive economic losses as well as marine environmental disturbances. As an effective and environment-friendly strategy to control HAB outbreaks, biological methods using marine bacteria capable of killing the harmful algae or algicidal extracellular compounds from them have been given attention. A new member of the $\gamma$-Proteobacteria, Hahella chejuensis KCTC 2396, was originally isolated from the Korean seashore for its ability to secrete industrially useful polysaccharides, and was characterized to produce a red pigment. This pigment later was identified as an alkaloid compound, prodigiosin. During the past several decades, prodigiosin has been extensively studied for its medical potential as immunosuppressants and antitumor agents, owing to its antibiotic and cytotoxic activities. The lytic activity of this marvelous molecule against Cochlodinium polykrikoides cells at very low concentrations ($\sim$l ppb) was serendipitously detected, making H. chejuensis a strong candidate among the biological agents for HAB control. This review provides a brief overview of algicidal marine bacteria and their products, and describes in detail the algicidal characteristics, biosynthetic process, and genetic regulation of prodigiosin as a model among the compounds active against red-tide organisms from the biochemical and genetic viewpoints.
