  • Nowadays conmpetltlOn of developing new products is getting keen. We can notice that the role and importance of design are emphasized more than ever. The main cause of this tendency is that technical power is no more a factor which secures the superiority in products competition, as technology is gneneralized in the world. Therefore, design is recognized intensely as a competitive strategy to promote competitive power of products. It is an already known fact that the design for both rational function and charming form to satisfy consumer's desires is a short cut to success, when a company develops a new product to promote competitive power in market. The design which plays a leading role in the activity of developing more cnovenient, more economical and more aesthetic products is called 'Competitive Edge' or 'New Corporate Weapon'. Judging form each company's case of developing products, we can guess that it has its own plan and process of developing new products with defferdnl interest and effort. The strategy of developing products is considered as the most important factor that affects the very existence of rhe company. This thesis is composed of six chapters in all. In the firstchapter, I describe the purpose, method, and scope of study. The second chapter includes the image of form in oil fan heater market in nearby Japan and that of interior in our domestic home and shops, and the trend of word life cycle by analyzing circumstances. The third chapter focuses on consumer's attitude. In the fourth chapter, I compare and test current products of competitive companies including Samsung, Daewoo, Shinilwith those of Gold STar. The trend of products, technique, and design which resulted form this comparison is described. In the fifth chapter I explain the strategy, and process of design of oil fan heater in 1992. The last conclusive chapter presents the major point drawed form the case study, but not includes an estimation of products and the condition of market. In this thesis, I reconsider the general understanding of design and designing process and the value of design as a main factor in the strategy of management by investigating the development of products and the strategy of design, and the process of design.

  • Kinematic calibration is a process whereby the actual values of geometric parameters are estimated so as to minimize the error in absolute positioning. Measuring all components of Cartesian posture, particularly the orientation, can be difficult. With partial pose measurements, all parameters may not be identifiable. This paper proposes a new device that can identify all kinematic parameters with partial pose measurements. Study is performed for a six degree-of-freedom fully parallel Hexa Slide manipulator. The device, however, is general and can be used for other parallel manipulators. The proposed device consists of a link with U joints on both sides and is equipped with a rotary sensor and a biaxial inclinometer. When attached between the base and the mobile platform, the device restricts the end-effector's motion to five degree-of-freedom and can measure position of the end-effector and one of its rotations. Numerical analyses of the identification Jacobian reveal that all parameters are identifiable. Computer simulations show that the identification is robust for the errors in the initial guess and the measurement noise. Intrinsic inaccuracies of the device can significantly deteriorate the calibration results. A measurement procedure is proposed and formulations of cost functions are discussed to prevent propagation of the inaccuracies to the calibration results.

  • The treatment of Patients with bacteraemia and septicemia requires accurate and rapid identification of the pathogen so that the physician can be guided regarding the selection of the proper antimicrobial therapy. The usual procedure is to withdraw an aliquot of the positive blood culture sample for gram staining and subculturing on the media for the growth and subsequent identification, and susceptibility determinations. It was noticed that during the process some microbiologists would sniff the effluent gases that are products of metabolism and in some cases guess the identity of the bacterium. That Prompted us to engage in systematic investigation of two gram positive and two gram negative bacteria using an electronic nose that had been proven successful in distinguishing the aroma of coffee beans from different sources. The investigation was successful in illustrating the efficacy of such a device in this clinical setting to distinguish Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. A representative set of patterns obtained with this apparatus is displayed as well. A representative set of patterns obtained with this apparatus is displayed as well. No effort was made to determine an optimal set of sensors for some specific set of bacterial metabolism gaseous products.

  • The distance in load parameter space to the closest voltage collapse point provides the worst case power margin and the left eigenvector identifies the most effective direction to steer the system to maximize voltage stability under contingency. This paper presents the results of the comparative performance study of the algorithms, which are applicable to a large scale power system, for computing the closest saddle node bifurcation (CSNB) point. Dobson's iterative method converges with robustness. However the slow process of updating the load increasing direction makes the algorithm less efficient. The direct method converges very quickly. But it diverges if the initial guess is not very close to CSNB. Zeng's method of estimating the approximate critical point in the pre-determined direction is attractive in the sense that it uses only using load flow equations. However, the method is found to be less efficient than Dobson's iterative method. It may be concluded from the above observation that the direct method with the initial values obtained by carrying out the iterative method twice is most efficient at this time and more efficient algorithms are needed for on-line application.

  • In this paper, we apply insightful statistical reliability tools to manage and seek improvements in the strengths of Oriented Strand Board (OSB). As a part of the OSB manufacturing process, the product undergoes destructive testing at various intervals to determine compliance with customers' specifications. Workers perform these tests on sampled cross sections of the OSB panel to measure the tensile strength, also called internal bond (IB), in pounds per square inches until failure. Additional stiffness strength tests include parallel and perpendicular elasticity indices (EI), which are taken from cross sectional samples of the OSB panel in the parallel and perpendicular directions with respect to the orientation of the wood strands. We explore both graphically and statistically these "pressure-to-failures" of OSB. Also, we briefly comment on reducing sources of variability in the IB and EI of OSB.

  • The One Pass Method (OPM) previously presented for the identification of single input single output systems is used to estimate the parameters of a Decentralized Control System (DCS). The OPM is a linear and therefore a simple estimation method. All of the calculations are performed in one pass, and no initial parameter guess, iteration, or powerful search methods are required. These features are of interest especially when the parameters of multi input-output model are estimated. The benefits of the OPM are revealed by comparing its results against those of two recently published methods based on pulse testing. The comparison is performed using two databases from the literature. These databases include single and multi input-output process transfer functions and relevant disturbances. The closed loop responses of these processes are roughly captured by the previous methods, whereas the OPM gives much more accurate results. If the parameters of a DCS are estimated, the OPM yields the same results in multi or single structure implementation. This is a novel feature, which indicates that the OPM is a convenient and practice method for the parameter estimation of multivariable DCSs.

  • Wood-plastic composites (WPC) are gaining market share in the building industry because of durability/maintenance advantages of WPC over traditional wood products and because of the removal of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) pressure-treated wood from the market. In order to ensure continued market share growth, WPC manufacturers need greater focus on reliability, quality, and cost. The reliability methods outlined in this paper can be used to improve the quality of WPC and lower manufacturing costs by reducing raw material inputs and minimizing WPC waste. Statistical methods are described for analyzing stiffness (tangent modulus of elasticity: MOE) and flexural strength (modulus of rupture: MOR) test results on sampled WPC panels. Descriptive statistics, graphs, and reliability plots from these test data are presented and interpreted. Sources of variability in the MOE and MOR of WPC are suggested. The methods outlined may directly benefit WPC manufacturers through a better understanding of strength and stiffness measures, which can lead to process improvements and, ultimately, a superior WPC product with improved reliability, thereby creating greater customer satisfaction.

  • This paper suggests the way to realize smart card security system by using handwritten signature instead of a password which is traditionally used for user authentication. Because of the familiarity of signature we don't need to try to remember the password and signature is difficult to be used by guess or illegal forced situation. The feature data of handwritten signature is large, so we designed COS which is consist of special commands for processing user's handwritten signature data, user authentication, and basic commands based on ISO 7816-3. Also protocol among user, smart card terminal and DB server is designed. In registration process, the feature data of user signature is saved in both a DB server and a smart card. User authentication is processed by comparing the user signature and the saved feature data in a smart card and in a DB server. And the authentication result and hash value of signature data in DB server are transferred to smart card. During this process the authentication between DB server and user is finished. The proposed security system has more higher level of security in user authentication of smart card and it will Provide safer and more convenient security services.

  • This study was conducted in 2008 with 80 in-service mathematics teachers. We took a course that was consisted of a lecture and a practice on Socrates' method. In our study, mathematics teachers conducted making a teaching plan by using Socrates' method. But we became know that we need to offer concrete ideas or examples for mathematics teachers in order to apply Socrates' method effectively. Therefore we tried to search for educational methods in using Socrates' method to teach school mathematics. After investigating of preceding researches, we selected some examples. On the basis of these examples, we suggested concrete methods in using Socrates' method. That is as follows. Socrates' method need to be used in the context mathematical problem solving. Socrates' method can be applied in the process of overcoming cognitive obstacles. A question in using Socrates' method have to guide mathematical thinking (or attitude). When we use Socrates' method in the teaching of a proof, student need to have an opportunity to guess the conclusion of a proposition. The process of reflection revision-improvement can be connected to using Socrates' method.
