The aims of the present studies were to understand the physiolosical and genetic characters of Streptomyces sp. isolated from soil. It revealed that Streptomyces sp. SMF301 had very fast growth rate and produced extracellular protease and heavily sporulated on rich media. It also showed $\beta$-lactamase activity and pigment production. Nonsporulating mutants were isolated after NTG or acriflavin treatment and their characters were compared with the parent strain. It was found that the mutants obtained by acriflavin treatment and ghier characters were compared with the parent strain. It was found that the mutants obtained by acriflavin treatment lost the pigment formation and $\beta$-lactamase production. Protease actibity of the mutant was lowered and the pH optimum was changed toward neutral. It was found that the changes were resulted from the reduction of alkaline protease biosynthesis in the bald mutant. Therefore it is considered that sporulation, pigment formation, $\beta$-lactamase production, and alkaline protease production in Streptomyces sp. might be controlled with a closely related relationship.
Dendrophyllia compressa Ogawa and Takahashi, 1995 is newly reported from Korea. The specimen was collected off Seogwipo, Jeju-do, Korea in 1969. It is described herein based on the morphological characters of the skeletal structures. Dendrophyllia compressa is characterized by its small and bushy growth form with branches, vertical growth direction, small calicular diameter, compressed calice, Pourtalès Plan with vertical septal inner edges, flat and spongy columella, exserted septal upper margins, and epitheca. Dendrophyllia compressa has been synonymized with Cladopsammia eguchii . However, the former species differs from the latter species in its growth form, growth direction, colony size, corallite size, and corallite shape.
To examine aluminum toxicity on woody plants, Forsythia koreana cuttings were grown in the aluminum solution and ground water(pH 6.75). Aluminum solution were prepared 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0mM aluminum potassium sulfate, dilulted with ground water. Shoot growth, leaf number, leaf injury and leaf chlorophyll content were measured and compared among the treatments. In all growth-related characters(shoot growth. leaf number, leaf injury and leaf chlorophyll content), differences among the treatments were highly significant. Forsythia koreana cuttings were severely stressed in aluminum solution more than 1.0mM concentration.
In order to elucidate the systematic taxonomy and genetic characters of Canoderma lucidum, cultural characteristics of the fungus were investigated. Mycelial growth of Ganoderma lucidum were favorable on oat meal agar medium, and optimum temperature and pH of the medium for mycelial growth were $30^{\circ}C$ and 5.5-6.0 respectively. Irradiation of white fluorescent lamp inhibited mycelial growth and critical time for inhibition of mycelial growth was 4-8 hours. Concentric zones and mycelial strands of Ganoderma lucidum was induced by irradiation of white fluorescent lamp and formation of mycelial sectors was influenced by nutrient source of media and irradiation of white fluorescent lamp. These characters were different among the isolates, but no relationship was observed between these characters and the fruiting body type of the fungus. Basidiospores were formed directly from the mycelium cultured on artificial media without producing fruit body.
Human mind consists of what he or she knows, namely 'a portion of awareness', as well as of what he or she does not know, namely 'a portion of unawareness'.1) Self refers to both consciousness and unconsciousness, whereas self-growth seems to be an ability with which a human being appropriately faces with the hidden desire and resistance of unconsciousness for himself and maintains its balance and unification with consciousness harmoniously. On this account, examination on character's unconsciousness seems to be an important methodological means to prospect for the original looks of self, based on character's internal psychology, and to grasp the change and growth throughout the course. Study subjects, namely and , are quite similar in internal/external factors around the leading character. Two girl leading characters, who have nested in parental influences and boundaries, confront with unfamiliar circumstances under the abrupt absence of parents. In order to resist contradictory and irrational situations there and to restore all the things to its original places, both carry out a hard adventure. Interestingly, both characters are similar in their unconscious characteristics, but they take different channels for their journey, confronting attitudes and changes of internal self. The purpose of this study was to examine the concrete origin of two characters' unconsciousness and then comparatively analyze the role of leading character's unconsciousness in the drama and its effects on the whole work. Therefore, the author tried to prove such a hypothesis as the probability and persuasiveness of story could be found out through establishing a character of higher completion degree and connecting between situations and events that are most appropriate for character's internal unconscious psychology.
Orostachys japonicus, called Wasong as herbal medicine and a short day plant, should be artificially kept in long daylength to control anthesis of its florets. The study was done to clarify the effect of daylength (10, 13, 16 hours a day) on growth, morphological characters, and flowering. The treatments were done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. With longer daylength plant height and inflorescence length were increased but number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were decreased. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights were increased with longer daylength from late September while floret dry weight showed reverse result. Florets formed were the greatest in daylength of 10 hours during September but the least during the other period. Anthesis of the florets was observed only in daylength of 10 hours during October and all the plants from the treatment were flowered.
Floret flowering of Orostachys japonicus, a monocarpic and short day plant, should be controlled to continue cultivating. The study was done to examine the effect of transplanted seedling size (large, 18 leaves; medium, 13 leaves; small, 8 leaves) on growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. With larger seedling transplanted, plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were increased. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights were increased as transplanted seedlings became larger. Although formed florets were inclined with larger transplanted seedling, they were not flowered because of the night-break treatment, meaning that the larger transplanted seedlings, the more economic yield.
Floret flowering of a monocarpic plant Orostachys japonicus should be controlled to change its harvest time. The study was done to clarify the effect of pinching time of inflorescence with many florets (Aug. 25, Sept. 8 and 22, Oct. 4) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 when afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks to Nov. 4. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height, inflorescence length and number of leaves including bracts showed significant difference between the treatments because they were sharply increased until each pinching time. Stem diameter did nearly same. Leaf and bract, floret, shoot and total dry weights had similar response to the plant height, but stem and root dry ones did similar response to the stem diameter. Most florets were removed by the pinching treatments after formed ones were increased until each pinching time. Few florets were left after the treatment, meaning that night-break treatment after that could be skipped.
Year-round cultivation of a monocarpic plant Orostachys japonicus should be possible in case to controlling floret flowering. To give some information on its year-round cultivation, this study was carried out to examine the effect of night-break treatment time (June 10, Aug. 25) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 and heating were made under $20^{\circ}C$ Samples were taken every 4 weeks from Aug. 25. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample until March 9. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were greater in the earlier treatment than in the later one. Leaves and bracts, floret, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed the same response as plant height did to the night-break treatment time. Florets were more formed in the earlier treatment than in the later treatment in which they were flowered only on March 9, meaning that its year-round cultivation should be possible under night-break treatment before bolting and heating during winter season.
To select the most suitable variety of forage rape for growth in the southern part of Korea, Seven introduced varieties were grown from Mar, 1999 to August 2000. Velox was shown to have the highest dry matter yield in comparison to other varieties used in this experiment. It showed relatively high content of crude protein and in virto dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and low content of NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin. Therefore, it was concluded that Velox was the most suitable variety with high yield and high nutrient quality for spring in the southern part of Korea. The heritabilities of all the observed characters were estimated to be high.
