Ground cave-in is usually initiated by the formation of cavity within the ground due to soil loss. When the location of the cavity is deep in the ground, the detection of the cavity is not easy. Then it is possible that the hidden cavity expands for a long time to eventually cause sudden large-scale collapse. A case of large scale ground collapse in the old fill ground was studied and described in this paper. The underground cavity appeared to be caused by subsurface erosion deep in the ground and to expand/extend upward till it was ended by the catastrophic ground failure. It highlighted the importance of proper drainage work in a large scale land fill.
In this study, dielectrical constant of the ground was measured using TDR method and correlated with water contents and density of ground. In order to evaluate the applicability as a cavity exploration, model experiments were carried out to analyze the effects of cavity size on the dielectrical constant. Test result indicated that dielectrical constant of the ground tended to linearly increase with the increase in water contents and density, which can be represented in a certain relational expression. Also, the dielectrical constant of ground varied sensitively with the cavity size of ground. The results conclude that the dielectrical constant, water contents and density of the ground proved to have a correlation among them, and the dielectrical constant is expected to be a basic data on cavity exploration.
In densely populated urban areas with a large amount of infrastructure, ground subsidence events can result in massive casualties and economic losses. In South Korea, the incidence of ground subsidence in urban areas has increased in recent years and the number of underground cavities suspected of causing such events has significantly increased. Therefore, it is essential to develop techniques to prevent the occurrence of underground and ground subsidence. In this study, a field test, laboratory test, and numerical analysis were conducted to determine the optimal compaction degree of the upper support layer of any underground cavity below the level of sewer pipes in order to prevent such cavities from collapsing and leading to ground subsidence accidents. During the field test, an underground cavity was simulated using ice, and the generation of the cavity was confirmed using ground penetrating radar. The ground investigation was performed using a cone penetration test, and the compaction of the ground where ground subsidence occurred was evaluated with a laboratory test. The behaviour of the ground under various conditions was predicted using a numerical analysis based on the data obtained from the field test and previous studies. Based on these results, the optimal compaction degree of the ground required to prevent the underground cavity from causing ground subsidence was predicted and presented.

The underground cavity known as one of the reasons of ground surface settlement is a discontinuous character. Therefore, it is limited to analyze with continuum analysis. In this research, The spherical underground cavity affecting the ground surface settlement is studied with Discrete Element Method. Ground properties, depth and diameter of the spherical underground cavity are chosen as factors of the spherical underground cavity and the effect of the each factor variations on the ground surface settlement is analyzed. Relative depth to the diameter of the spherical underground cavity is also studied. The result of the research suggests the basis of underground cavity collapse prediction and standard of support.
The existence of underground cavity should be considered in the assessment of georisk such as ground subsidence. Even if the shear strength of the ground around the cavity is known, it is difficult to accurately analyze the safety around the cavity due to the uncertainties related to geometric conditions such as the cavity size. In this paper, stability chart representing dimensionless stability constants was proposed based on the ground strength and geometric conditions. Numerical analysis had been carried out accounting for the stability constants such as the ground strength, the adhesion and friction angles, and the size and depth of the underground cavity. The proposed charts can help estimating the stability of ground with underground circular cavity.
Due to the rapid development of cities, densities and heights of urban structures are increased, and much larger and more underground spaces are being developed accordingly. Increasing development of underground spaces has induced more ground sinks and underground cavities. Therefore, safety of people is threatened by potential ground collapses and possible accidents, which may result from underground cavity. To actively respond against potential danger of ground sink, evaluation of existing cavity grade and development of recovery procedure are important. There exists the ground sinking management grade system of expressway developed as local standards in Japan. Recently, ground sinking management grade system of Seoul was developed with consideration of road and asphalt conditions. In this study, 209 underground cavities of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ area were explored and their cavity shapes and grades were evaluated based on both ground sinking management grade systems of Japan and Seoul. Comparison is made between cavity grades evaluated based on both grading systems from Japan and Seoul. As a result of comparative analysis, the conservatively-estimated cavity grades requiring emergency restoration based on the Japanese management grade system of expressway result from neglection of layer thickness of surface pavement, considering only width and cover depth of a cavity.
Purpose: In the case of cavity discovered by ground penetrating radar exploration, it is necessary to accurately predict the filling amount in the cavity in advance, fill the cavity sufficiently and exert strength to ensure stability and prevent ground subsidence. Method: The cavity waveform analysis method by GPR exploration and the method using the cavity shape imaging equipment were performed to measure the cavity shape with irregular size and shape of the actual cavity, and the amount of cavity filling of the injection material was calculated during rapid restoration. Results: The expected filling amount was presented by analyzing the correlation between the cavity size and the filling amount of injection material according to the cavity scale and soil depth through the method by GPR exploration and the cavity scale calculation using the cavity shaping equipment. Conclusion: The cavity scale measured by the cavity imaging equipment was found to be in the range of 20% to 40% of the cavity scale by GPR exploration. In addition, the filling amount of injection material compared to the cavity scale predicted by GPR exploration was in the range of about 60% to 140%, and the filling amount of the injection material compared to the cavity size by the cavity shaping equipment was confirmed to be about 260% to 320%.
We investigate the characteristics of a wideband and high-gain cavity-backed slot antenna in terms of the reflection coefficients, radiation patterns, and gain. A cavity-backed slot antenna structure includes baffles, reflectors, and thick ground planes. The measured gain and bandwidth of a 10-dB return loss in a cavity-backed $2{\times}2$ array slot antenna with $h_1=2 $mm, d=2 mm are 15.5 dBi and nearly 27%, respectively, at 42 GHz. Baffles and reflectors are used to increase antenna gain, thus reducing the coupling among the slots on the thick ground plane.

To reduce the summertime cooling load of a plant factory, a concept design was performed for the double skin window which utilizes the low temperature air from a ground coupled heat exchanger. The design parameters were selected as the number of cavity air inlet, the cavity thickness, the location of cavity air inlet, and the configuration of cavity air outlet. A parametric study was conducted in a systematic way to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics of the double skin window. As the number of cavity air inlet and the cavity thickness increase, the heat flux from outside air to indoor air was decreased. The effect of the location of cavity air inlet was not significant and the larger cavity air outlet area gave us relatively better heat blocking performance from outside hot air. This study demonstrated that it is possible to develop an improved double skin window by utilizing a ground coupled heat exchanger.
The proposed cavity-backed slot antenna is comprised of baffles, reflectors and thick ground plane. The baffles and reflectors are used to increase an antenna gain, thus reducing the coupling among slots on a thick ground plane. The height of the baffle and reflector were altered and the characteristics of corresponding $2{\times}2$ cavity-backed slot array antennas were measured separately. Themeasured antenna gains were above 15dBi, at f=42GHz and a wide impedance bandwidth over 27% at a center frequency of 42GHz.
