  • Bordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida are two main pathogens responsible for atrophic rhinitis (AR), which causes considerable economic losses in swine industry worldwide. Commercial vaccine has been widely used to prevent the damage from AR in Korea. Adverse effects of vaccination at the injection site have been reported, which results in the numerous complaint from farms. However, data on about local reaction at the injection site remains limited. In this study, we compared the local adverse effects of three commercial vaccines following intramuscular injection. The results showed that no gross lesion was founded at the injection sites of all three vaccines. In histopathologic examination, a various level of lesions was identified. Especially, the local reaction of vaccine including saponin as an adjuvant showed the lowest level of histopathological lesions, when compared to those of oil-based and vitamin E-based vaccines. Therefore, this study would provide the information about the extent of local reaction at the injection site and help the farmer to select AR vaccine in order to avoid adverse reaction due to vaccination.

  • Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a rare non-neoplastic bone lesion that involves mostly the long bones and vertebrae and may occur very rarely in the craniofacial bones. ABCs may occur as secondary bony pathologies in association with various benign and malignant bone tumors and with fibrous dysplasia (FD). FD is a common non-neoplastic bony pathology mostly affecting craniofacial bones. Secondary ABC occurring in craniofacial FD is extremely rare, with only approximately 20 cases reported in the literature to date. Here, we report on a case of secondary ABC in a 25-year-old woman who has had a craniofacial deformity for over 10 years and who presented to us with a rapidly growing painful pulsatile mass in the right frontal region that began over 2 months prior to admission. On thorough examination of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging brain scans taken at two-month interval, an aggressive, rapidly enlarging ABC, arising from the right frontal FD, was diagnosed. The patient underwent preoperative embolization followed by gross total resection of the ABC and cranioplasty. The 6-month follow up showed no recurrence of the ABC, nor was any progression of the FD noticed.

  • Gliosarcoma (GS), known as variant of glioblastoma multiforme, is aggressive and very rare primary central nervous system malignant neoplasm. They are usually located in the supratentorial area with possible direct dural invasion or only reactive dural thickening. However, in this case, GS was located in lateral side of left posterior cranial fossa. A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with 3 month history of continuous dizziness and gait disturbance without past medical history. A gadolinium-enhanced MRI demonstrated $5.6{\times}4.8{\times}3.2cm$ sized mass lesion in left posterior cranial fossa, heterogeneously enhanced. The patient underwent left retrosigmoid craniotomy with navigation system. The tumor was combined with 2 components, whitish firm mass and gray colored soft & suckable mass. On pathologic report, the final diagnosis was GS of WHO grade IV. In spite of successful gross total resection of tumor, we were no longer able to treat because of the patient's rejection of adjuvant treatment. The patient survived for nine months without receiving any special treatment from the hospital.

  • Chronic osteomyelitis with proliferative periostitis, known as Garre's osteomyelitis, is a type of osteomyelitis characterized by a distinctive gross thickening of the periosteum of bones. Peripheral reactive bone formation can be caused by mild irritation or infection. Garre's osteomyelitis is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and the mandible is more affected than the maxilla. The following is a case report of a 12-year-old female patient with Garre's osteomyelitis of the mandible due to an infection of a root canal-treated tooth. Without surgical intervention, the patient's symptoms were relieved through nonsurgical root canal re-treatment with long-term calcium hydroxide placement. A cone-beam computed tomography image obtained 6 months after treatment completion displayed complete healing of the periapical lesion and resolution of the peripheral reactive buccal bone. Due to the clinical features of Garre's osteomyelitis, which is characterized by thickening of the periosteum, it can be mistaken for other diseases such as fibrous dysplasia. It is important to correctly diagnose Garre's osteomyelitis based on its distinctive clinical features to avoid unnecessary surgical intervention, and it can lead to minimally invasive treatment options.

  • The current standard of treatment for differentiated thyroid cancer is surgical resection followed by radioactive iodine therapy according to the recurrence risk. However, external beam radiotherapy may be recommended in limited cases where surgical resection is impossible or residual gross lesion remains or the aforementioned standard therapy is deemed insufficient in achieving local control. We report a case of 59 year old patient who presented with advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma of right neck but was unable to receive surgical resection due to underlying Eisenmenger syndrome. He received radiation therapy of 67.5 Gy in 30 fractions with palliative aim with no further treatment and has been maintaining long-term stable disease state for 38 months. Herein, we report a rare case of palliative aim radiation therapy alone for advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma with literature review.

  • The unicystic ameloblastoma deserves separate consideration on the basis of its clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features and its response to treatment. It refers to those cystic lesions that show clinical, radiographic, or gross features of a jaw cyst, but on histologic examination show a typical ameloblastomatous epithelium lining part of the cyst cavity. The lesion is most commonly found on the mandible posterior area, and often asymptomatic, although large lesions may cause a painless swelling of the jaws. The lesion typically appears as a circumscribed radiolucency that surrounds the crown of an unerupted molar. These are usually considered to be a dentigerous, residual cyst on the relationship of the lesion to teeth in the area. Three histopathologic variants of unicystic ameloblastoma may be seen. 1) Luminal type, 2) Intraluminal type, 3) Mural type. In this case, these tumor was treated as cysts by enucleation with iliac bone graft, and the diagnosis of ameloblastoma is made after microscopic examination of the presumed cyst.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate occurrence patterns of Clostridium perfringens on different raising periods in broilers. In different raising periods, we investigated the change in the gross lesion and microscopic histological findings of the mucose of the small intestine, colony forming unit (CFU) and the types C. perfringens with PCR assay. According to the gross lesions on the mucose of small intestine with 10-days-old broilers, the non-antibiotic group showed a higher value (0.6) than the antibiotic group (0.0). Whereas 20-days-old broilers with, the antibiotic treatment had a slightly lower value (1.0) than the non-antibiotic group (1.3). In the histological examination on the villi of the small intestine, there was no damage of the villi of the small intestine with 1-day-old broilers in both groups; however, the non-antibiotic group showed a higher value (0.4) than the antibiotic group (0.0) with 10-days-old broilers. In the non-antibiotic group, the CFU of C. perfringens of the fecal samples from the small intestine increased from 10 days of raising broilers and rapidly increase after 20 and 30 days of raising broilers. There was no detection of C. perfringens types with PCR assy in 1-day-old broilers, but we found C. perfringens type A in 10-, 20- and 30-days-old broilers. Although it is possible to raise healthy broilers by using antibiotics, the addition of antibiotics to concentrate feed is prohibited for public health. The results of this study would contribute to proper feeding management through the careful use of antibiotics.

  • For the induction of arthropathy, 4% hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) was injected for 4 weeks into the intra-articular space of the 25 New Zealand white rabbits to damage articular cartilage. The verification of arthropathy induction and the effect of scan-bio laser treatment were determined by measuring superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, by observing gross and histopathologic findings. The SOD activity increased by about 40% in arthropathy group, as compared to controls. Although SOD activity in arthropathy group was not significantly different from the 2-week group, it was significantly different from the 4-week control and treatment groups. There was also a significant difference between the 4-week control and treatment groups. Grossly, erosions formed on the articular cartilage surface, and the lateral femoral condyle was damaged in arthropathy group. In comparison, there was slight, but not significant, progression of the lesion in the 2-week control group, and no difference between the 2-week treatment and control groups. Conversely, severe erosions damaged the articular cartilage in the 4-week control group. Cartilage proliferation was seen in gross observations in the 4-week treatment group, suggesting a treatment effect. Histopathologically, there was slight articular surface damage and apoptosis in arthropathy group, and serious cartilage damage, despite slight chondrocyte proliferation, in the 4-week control group. By contrast, the 4-week treatment group showed chondrocyte replacement, with close to normal articular cartilage on the articular surface. There was significant cartilage proliferation with regeneration of the articular cartilage on the articular surface in the group treated with low-level laser, as compared to control group, when arthropathy was induced by $H_2O_2$ injections. Therefore, low-level laser was effective in the treatment of chemically induced arthropathy.

  • In order to study the immunohistochemical effects of Opae-san on gastric ulcer induced by HCl-aspirin in rats, experiments were done by oral administration and measure histological features of ulcer lesion, scaning electron microscopic appearance, the changes of numbers of parietal cells, chief cells, gastrin and somatostatin-immunoreactive cells. The obtained results are as follows: 1. Ulcerative lesions were numerously detected in control groups especially in junction of cardiac-fundic gastric mucosa and histologically very severe injury to gastric epithelium were observed too but in the Opae-san administrated groups, no gross lesion of ulcer were detected and histologically minor injury of gastric mucosa were observed. Most slight injuries to gastric mucosa were observed in 5 days after treatment. 2. The numbers of parietal cells were remarkably increased in control group but in Opae-san administrated groups appeared significant decrease compared to control groups. Most remarkably decrease of the numbers of parietal cells compared to control groups were observed in 5 days after treatment. 3. The numbers of chief cells were remarkably decreased in control group but in Opae-san administrated groups appeared significant increase compared to control groups. Most remarkably increase of the numbers of chief cells compared to control groups were observed in 5 days after treatment. 4. The numbers of gastrin-immunoreactive cells were remarkably decreased in control group but in Opae-san administrated groups appeared significant increase compared to control groups. Most remarkably decrease of the numbers of gastrin-immunoreactive cells compared to control groups were observed in 5 days after treatment. 5. The numbers of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were remarkably decreased in control group but in Opae-san administrated groups appeared significant increase compared to control groups. Most remarkably decrease of the numbers of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells compared to control groups were observed in 5 days after treatment. 6. Scaning electron microscopically, severe denude and degeneration of gastric mucosa were observed in control groups but in Opae-san administrated groups the lesions were remarkably decreased compared to control groups.

  • The object of this study was to observe the effect of Banhasasim-tang (BHSST) on the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer in mice. Three different dosages of BHSST extract (400, 200 and 100 mg/kg) were once orally administered 1 hr before HCl/EtOH mixture treatment. One hour after HCl/EtOH mixture single oral treatment, the changes on the gross hemorrhagic lesion scores, fundic histopathology, gastric nitrate/nitrite contents, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system (catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities) were observed, and compared with that of ranitidine 100 mg/kg. As results of all three different dosages of BHSST extract treatment in the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer mice, significant and dose-dependent decreased gastric damages. BHSST extracts also increased gastric nitrate/nitrite contents and strengthened the antioxidant defense systems, and increased the activities of catalase and SOD, respectively. BHSST extracts 200 mg/kg showed similar anti-ulcerative effect as compared with ranitidine 100 mg/kg, in this experiment. BHSST has favorable protective effects against to the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric damages, through the strengthening of the body antioxidant defense systems. These gastroprotective effects of BHSST against HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer considered as results of complicated synergic effects of their 8 kinds of herbal components, but exact synergic or individual herbal effects are difficult to discuss in this study. Therefore, more detail synergic effects between 8 kinds of individual herbal component of BHSST should be tested with screening of active anti-inflammatory chemical ingredients, in future.
