For seismic retrofitting of masonry walls, the use of fibre reinforced cement-based mortar for bonding the fibre grids can eliminate some of the shortcomings related to the use of resin as bonding material. The results of an experimental testing program on masonry walls retrofitted with fibre reinforced mortar and fibre grids are presented in this paper. Seven squat masonry walls were tested under unidirectional lateral displacement reversals and constant axial load. Steel anchors were used to increase the effectiveness of the bond between the fibre grids and the masonry walls. Application of fibre grids on both lateral faces of the walls effectively improved the hysteretic behaviour and specimens could be loaded until slip occurred in the horizontal joint between the masonry and the bottom concrete stub. Application of the fibre grids on a single face did not effectively improve the hysteretic behaviour. Retrofitting with fibre reinforced mortar only prevented the early damage but did not effectively increase deformation capacity. When the boundaries of the cross sections were not properly confined, midplane splitting of the masonry walls occurred. Steel anchors embedded in the walls in the corners area effectively prevented this type of failure.
We construct a symmetric finite volume element (SFVE) scheme for a self-adjoint elliptic problem on tetrahedron grids and prove that our new scheme has optimal convergent order for the solution and has superconvergent order for the flux when grids are quasi-uniform and regular. The symmetry of our scheme is helpful to solve efficiently the corresponding discrete system. Numerical experiments are carried out to confirm the theoretical results.
For protection of the thruster against mechanical damage and reduction of tunnel resistance at ship forward speed, the tunnel grids are normally installed. Some of ship operators however, have a strong distrust of the protective function of the tunnel grids and so they do not want to install the protective grids for higher thruster efficiency. Since the grids should be installed at very close to the side shell as far as possible in due consideration of flow direction to minimize additional resistance induced by tunnel openings, it has been too hard and time consuming work to install the grids on the curved and chamfered tunnel entrances considering its relatively low resistance reduction effect. DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd) developed a substituting device named TG (Tunnel Guides) for bow thruster tunnel grids which is characterized by higher resistance reduction, higher thruster efficiency and easy to installation. This paper provides the principle idea of the TG with short history of the development using CFD calculations and model experiments in MOERI (former KRISO).
To substitute indium tin oxide (ITO), many substituents have been studied such as metal nanowires, carbon based materials, 2D materials, and conducting polymers. These materials are not good enough to apply to an electrode because theses exhibit relatively high resistance. So metal grids are required as an additionalelectrode to improve the conductivities of substituents. The metal grids were printed by electrohydrodynamic printing system using Ag nanoparticle based ink. The Ag grids showed high uniformity and the line width was about $10{\mu}m$. The Ag nanoparticles are surrounded by dispersants such as unimolecular and polymer to prevent aggregation between Ag nanoparticles. The dispersants lead to low conductivity of Ag grids. Thus, the sintering process of Ag nanoparticles is strongly recommended to remove dispersants and connect each nanoparticles. For sintering process, the interface and microstructure of the Ag grid were controlled in 1.0 torr Ar atmosphere at aound $400^{\circ}C$ of temperature. From the sintering process, the uniformity of the Ag grid was improved and the defects on the Ag grids were reduced. As a result, the resistivity of Ag grid was greatly reduced up to $5.03({\pm}0.10){\times}10^{-6}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. The metal grids embedded substrates containing low pressure Ar sintered Ag grids showed 90.4% of transmittance in visible range with $0.43{\Omega}/{\square}$ of sheet resistance.
In this paper, the corona discharge is analyzed by Finite Element Method(FEM) combined with Flux-corrected Transport(FCT) algorithm. In the previous papers, Finite Difference Method(FDM) combined with FCT was used. Usually in the FDM, the regionof interest is discretized with structured grids. But to refine local regions with same resolution, much more grids are required for the structured grids than for unstructured grids than for unstructured grids. Therefore, we propose the FEM-FCT method to simulate the corona discharge. The proposed method has good flexibility in model shape and can reduce the computational cost by the local refinement where the physical quantities have steep gradients. Using the proposed method, we study the streamer growth of parallel plate electrodes which is initiated by the low and high perturbation density. We find that the varying the initial density of perturbation has very little effect on the streamer propagation. And the corona discharge of the rod-to-plane electrode is simulated. On the surface of the rod electrode, the high concentration of the electric field gives rise to many number of streamer seeds. The strong axial streamer propagate to the plane electrode. The weaker non-axial streamer repel each other and stop growing more. The results are very similar to those of the papers which used the FDM-FCT method on structured grids. Thus we can conclude that the proposed FEM-FCT method is more efficient than the conventional FDM-FCT method by virtue of the reduction in computational grids number.
The present paper deals with the continuous work of extending multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP), which has been quite successfully proposed on two- and three-dimensional structured grids, onto the unstructured grids. The basic idea of the present limiting strategy is to control the distribution of both cell-centered and cell-vertex physical properties to mimic a multi-dimensional nature of flow physics, which can be formulated as so called the MLP condition. The MLP condition can guarantee a high-order spatial accuracy without yielding spurious oscillations. Recently, MLP slope limiter was proposed based on the MUSCL-type reconstruction in two-dimensional case and it can be readily extended to three-dimensional case. Through various numerical analyses and extensive computations, it is observed that the proposed limiters are quite effective in controlling numerical oscillations and very accurate in capturing both discontinuous and continuous multi-dimensional flow features on 3-D tetrahedral grids.
Conventional confinement reinforcement for rectangular columns consist of closely spaced perimeter hoops, overlapping hoops, and crossties. One of the potential alternatives to conventional reinforcement is a welded reinforcement grid, prefabricated to required size and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement. An experimental investigation was carried out to investigate the strength and deformability of reinforced concrete columns confined with welded reinforcement grids. The comparisons of the envelopes of experimental force-displacement hysteric relationships for columns confined by welded grids with analytically generated force-displacement curves for columns confined with conventional ties. In general, inelastic deformability beyond the peak, as indicate by the slope of the cuvers, was similar to those indicated by columns with conventional ties. The superior performance of columns with welded grids may be attributed to the improved confinement characteristics of grids associated with increased rigidity of welded ties.
Rice's monotone streamline upwind finite element method, which was proposed to treat convection-dominated flows, is applied to the linear triangular element. An alignment technique of unstructured grids with given velocity fields is used to prevent the interpolation error produced in evaluating the convection term in the upwind method. The alignment of grids is accomplished by optimizing a target function defined with the inner-product of a properly chosen side vector in the element with the velocity field. Two pure advection problems are considered to demonstrate the superiorities of the present approach in solving the convection-dominated flow on the unstructured grid. Solutions obtained with aligned grids are much closer to the exact solutions than those with initial regular grids. The capability of the present approach in predicting the appearance of the secondary vortex in the laminar confined jet impingement is shown by comparing streamlines to those produced by SIMPLE on a highly stretched grid toward the impingement plate.
The specific role of current collectors was investigated at the electrolyte/electrode interface of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Ag grids were fabricated as current collectors using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) jet printing for precise control of the grid geometry. The Ag grids reduced both the ohmic and polarization resistances as the pitch of the Ag grids decreased from $400{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$. The effective electron distribution along the Ag grids improved the charge transport and transfer at the interface, extending the active reaction sites. Our results demonstrate the applicability of EHD jet printing to the fabrication of efficient current collectors for performance enhancement of SOFCs.
