  • Encouragement of DER from Korean government with several policies boosts DER installation in power system. When the penetration of DER in the grid is getting high, loss of generation with break-away of DER by abnormal grid conditions should be considered, because loss of high generation causes abnormal low frequency and additional operations of protection system. Therefore, KEPCO where is Korean power utility is preparing improvement in regulations for DERs connected to the grid to support abnormal grid conditions such as low and high frequencies or voltages. This is called 'Ride Through' because the requirement is for DER to maintain grid connection during required periods when abnormal grid conditions occur. However, it is not easy to have a test for ride through capability in reality because emulation of abnormal grid conditions is not possible in real power system in operation. Also, it is not easy to have a study on grid effect when ride through capability fails with the same reason. PHILs (Power Hardware In the Loop System) makes it possible to analyze power system and hardware performance at once. Therefore, this paper introduces PHILs test methods and presents verification of ride through capability especially for low voltage grid conditions.

The grid-connected inverter makes frequency adjustment to the active power's charge discharge according to the load variation. In addition, the inverter is possible to act as a reactive power compensation device to eliminate harmonic operates as power factor change inhibiting, anti-transient voltage fluctuation, active filter. In this paper, we propose a design method of igbt stack considering the reactive power supply capacity to improve the quality and reliability of the inverter. Moreover, the grid-connected inverter considering the four-quadrant rated operation designed stack and verified the feasibility of the design through a thermal analysis.

  • Recent developments in power electronics technology have spurred interest in the use of renewable energy sources as distributed generation (DG) generators. The key component in DG generators is a grid-connected inverter that serves as an effective interface between the renewable energy source and the utility grid. The multifunctional inverter (MFI) is special type of grid-connected inverter that has elicited much attention in recent years. MFIs not only generate power for DGs but also provide increased functionality through improved power quality and voltage and reactive power support; thus, the capability of the auxiliary service for the utility grid is improved. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the various MFI system configurations for single-phase (two-wire) and three-phase (three- or four-wire) systems and control strategies for the compensation of different power quality problems. The advances in practical applications and recent research on MFIs are presented through a review of nearly 200 papers.

  • This study proposes a novel control and design method for a grid-connected inverter with an LCL filter without damping. The current resonance phenomenon must be considered when designing the grid-connected inverter system with an LCL filter. Passive or active damping is used in the inverter system to reduce the resonant current. However, passive damping reduces the efficiency of the system, and active damping methods are complex. If the resonant frequency is in a specific region, then the system will be unstable. This study examines the process of stabilizing the entire region without resonant damping. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experimentation.

  • It is well known that distributed generation(DG) system using renewable energy is an alternative to solve the problems which result from the exhaustion of fossil fuel and the environmental pollution. A PWM inverter is required for a power flow control in the DG systems. This paper proposes a SRF power flow control method considering grid impedance in grid-connected single-phase inverter systems. The proposed SRF power flow control method can provide a voltage-reference for the single-phase inverter even without any grid impedance estimation so that the single-phase inverter system could operate in stand-alone mode and grid-connected mode based on the known nominal value of grid impedance. Also independent controls of active and reactive power are achieved by the proposed control method. The effectiveness and the validity of the proposed control method are demonstrated through simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed control method can control properly power flow in grid-connected single-phase inverter systems.

  • To improve the power quality of distributed generation (DG) systems even in the presence of distorted grid condition, dual current control scheme of a grid-connected inverter is proposed. The proposed current control scheme is achieved by decomposing the inverter state equations into the fundamental and harmonic components. The derived models are employed to design dual current controllers. The conventional PI decoupling current controller is used in the fundamental model to control the main power flow in DG systems. At the same time, the predictive control is applied in the harmonic model to suppress undesired harmonic currents to zero quickly. To decompose the voltage inputs and state variables into the fundamental and harmonic components, the fourth order band pass filter (BPF) is designed in the discrete-time domain for a digital implementation. For experimental verification, 2kVA prototype of a grid-connected inverter has been constructed using digital signal processor (DSP) TMS320F28335. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated through comparative simulation and experimental results.

  • In a weak grid condition, the precise grid impedance estimation is essential to guaranteeing the high performance current control and power transfer for a grid-connected inverter. This study proposes a precise estimation method for grid impedance by PQ variations by employing the variation method of reference currents. The operation principle of grid impedance estimation is fully presented, and the negative impact of the phase locked loop is analyzed. Estimation error by a synchronization angle in the park's transformation using the phase locked loop is derived. As a result, the variation method of reference currents for accurate estimation is introduced. The validation of the proposed method is verified through several simulation results and experiments based on a 2-kW voltage source inverter prototype.

  • This paper presents a high-efficiency power conditioning system (PCS) for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) modules. The proposed PCS consists of a step-up DC-DC converter and a single-phase DC-AC inverter for the grid-connected PV modules. A soft-switching step-up DC-DC converter is proposed to generate a high DC-link voltage from the low PV module voltage with a high-efficiency. A DC-link voltage controller is presented for constant DC-link voltage regulation. A half-bridge inverter is used for the single-phase DC-AC inverter for grid connection. A grid current controller is suggested to supply PV electrical power to the power grid with a unity power factor. Experimental results are obtained from a 180 W grid-connected PV module system using the proposed PCS. The proposed PCS achieves a high power efficiency of 93.0 % with an unity power factor for a 60 Hz / 120 Vrms AC power grid.

  • This paper presents an algorithm of a compensation of the grid current distortion caused by the grid voltage unbalance and distortion in 3-phase bi-directional DC to AC inverter. Usually 3-phase grid system has unbalance and distortion because of connecting 1-phase and non-linear load with 3-phase load using same input node. Controlling 3-phase inverter by general method under the unbalanced and distorted grid voltage, the grid current has distortion. This distortion of the grid current cause the grid voltage distortion again. So, it need to control the grid current balanced and non-distorted, even the grid voltage gets unbalanced and distorted. There are some complex method to compensate the gird current distortion. it suggest simple method to solve the problem. Simulation and experiment is used to validate the proposed algorithm.
