This paper proposes the adaptive relaying of protective devices applied in the neighboring distribution feeders for reliable and efficient operations of a wind farm interconnected with distribution networks by dedicated lines. A wind farm connected to an electric power network is one of the greatest alternative energy sources. However, the wind turbine generators are influenced by abnormal grid conditions such as disturbances occurring in the neighboring distribution feeders as well as the dedicated power. Particularly, in cases of a fault happening in the neighboring distribution feeders, a wind farm might be accelerated until protective devices clear the fault. Therefore, the delayed operation time of protective devices for satisfying the coordination might overly expose the interconnected wind turbine generators to the fault and cause damage to them. This paper describes the proper delayed operation time of protective relay satisfying the coordination of the distribution networks as well as reducing damage on the interconnected wind farm. The simulation results for the Hoenggye substation model composed of five feeders and one dedicated line using PSCAD/EMTDC showed that the proper delayed time of protective devices reflecting the fault condition and the power output of the wind farm could improve the operational reliability, efficiency, and stability of the wind farm.

The photovoltaic power system is performing power generation by being installed in outdoors. Therefore it has the characteristics affected by environmental factors. In particular, if the solar power generation facility connected to the grid, the power can be generated continuously in a state of being secured operating voltage of the inverter and solar irradiation. In that case, if an abnormal situation such as flooding or heavy rains has occur, the possibility of electric shock or damage of facilities due to current leakage or a floating matters is present. In this paper, we performed electrical safety assessment about the connection part, junction box and cable of the solar module when the solar power system was flooded. we also assessed whether or not the leakage current is occurred in case of the cable was damaged. As a result, in case of the leakage current is large, we can be known that it is the risk of electric shock as well as cause of inverter damage.
Progressing from weather forecasts and warnings to multi-hazard impact-based forecast and warning services represents a paradigm shift in service delivery. Urban flooding is a typical meteorological disaster. This study proposes support plan for urban flooding impact-based forecast by providing inundation risk matrix. To achieve this goal, we first configured storm sewer management model (SWMM) to analyze 1D pipe networks and then grid based inundation analysis model (GIAM) to analyze 2D inundation depth over the Gangnam drainage area with $7.4km^2$. The accuracy of the simulated inundation results for heavy rainfall in 2010 and 2011 are 0.61 and 0.57 in POD index, respectively. 20 inundation scenarios responding on rainfall scenarios with 10~200 mm interval are produced for 60 and 120 minutes of rainfall duration. When the inundation damage thresholds are defined as pre-occurrence stage, occurrence stage to $0.01km^2$, 0.01 to $0.1km^2$, and $0.1km^2$ or more in area with a depth of 0.5 m or more, rainfall thresholds responding on each inundation damage threshold results in: 0 to 20 mm, 20 to 50 mm, 50 to 80 mm, and 80 mm or more in the rainfall duration 60 minutes and 0 to 30 mm, 30 to 70 mm, 70 to 110 mm, and 110 mm or more in the rainfall duration 120 minutes. Rainfall thresholds as a trigger of urban inundation damage can be used to form an inundation risk matrix. It is expected to be used for urban flood impact forecasting.
Changes in climate have largely increased concentrated heavy rainfall, which in turn is causing enormous damages to humans and properties. Floods are one of the most deadly and damaging natural disasters known to mankind. The flood forecasting and warning system concentrates on reducing injuries, deaths, and property damage caused by floods. Therefore, the exact relationship and the spatial variability analysis of hydrometeorological elements and characteristic factors is critical elements to reduce the uncertainty in rainfall-runoff model. In this study, grid resolution depending on the topographic factor in rainfall-runoff models presents how to respond. semi-distribution of rainfall-runoff model using the model GRM simulated and calibrated rainfall-runoff in the Gamcheon and Naeseongcheon watershed. To run the GRM model, input grid data used rainfall (two event), DEM, landuse and soil. This study selected cell size of 500 m(basic), 1 km, 2 km, 5 km, 10 km and 12 km. According to the resolution of each grid, in order to compare simulation results, the runoff hydrograph has been made and the runoff has also been simulated. As a result, runoff volume and peak discharge which simulated cell size of DEM 500 m~12 km were continuously reduced. that results showed decrease tendency. However, input grid data except for DEM have not contributed increase or decrease runoff tendency. These results showed that the more increased cell size of DEM make the more decreased slope value because of the increased horizontal distance.

This paper includes new protection concepts and practices to avoid mechanical damage of three-phase transformer by asynchronous operation of synchronous generator. this failure is often caused just after synchronous generator was connected to the grid because of a malfunction of the controller or misconnections of the synchronous devices. The results of the studies on the analyzing the phenomenon of asynchronous operation experienced in Korea and rapidly detecting asynchronous state are descrived.
Some phenomena occurred when one phase of the line circuit breaker was opened while a generator was operating to connect with the power grid were simulated by PSCAD/EMTDC and the analysis for the reason of operation and non-operation of protective relay will contribute to prevent spreading damage when same prospective faults occur.

The accidents caused by dielectric instability have been increasing in power grid. It is important to enhance the dielectric reliability of a high voltage apparatus to reduce the damage from electrical hazards. To develop an electrically reliable high voltage apparatus, the experimental study on the electrical breakdown field strength is indispensable, as well as theoretical approach. In this paper, the lightning impulse breakdown characteristics considering utilization factors are studied for the establishment of insulation design criteria of an high voltage apparatus. The utilization factors are represented as the ratio of mean electric field to maximum electric field. Dielectric experiments are performed by using several kinds of sphere-plane electrode systems made of stainless steel. As a result, it is found that dielectric characteristics are affected by not only maximum electric field intensity but also utilization factors of electrode systems. The results are expected to be applicable to designing the air-insulated high voltage apparatuses.

This paper describes computer simulation program of high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP). The HEMP is produced by the gamma rays form high-altitude nuclear explosion. The gamma rays generate a current of compton electron that leads to the production of electromagnetic fields. In case of high altitude nuclear burst, the electrical fields at the earth's surface are strong enough to be damaged for electrical and electronic device over a very much larger area. Therefore, national infrastructure will be serious damage such as power grid and communication network. In this paper introduce simulation program for calculation of HEMP and present to simulation study results of high altitude nuclear explosion experiment from U.S. and U.S.S.R.
A compact model approach of a network of spring elements for elastic loading is presented for the thermal deformation analysis of BGA package assembly. High-sensitivity moire interferometry is applied to evaluate and calibrated the model quantitatively. Two ball grid array (BGA) package assemblies are employed for moire experiments. For a package assembly with a small global bending, the spring model can predict the boundary conditions of the critical solder ball excellently well. For a package assembly with a large global bending, however, the relative displacements determined by spring model agree well with that by experiment after accounting for the rigid-body rotation. The shear strain results of the FEM with the input from the calibrated compact spring model agree reasonably well with the experimental data. The results imply that the combined approach of the compact spring model and the local FE analysis is an effective way to predict strains and stresses and to determine solder damage of the critical solder ball.
Buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) are widely used as highly ductile seismic devices, with the first building using BRBs completed in 1989 in Tokyo, and thousands more now in Japan, USA, Taiwan, China, New Zealand and other countries. Although design codes of several countries specify BRB performance criteria, detailed design provisions are not necessarily provided, as BRBs are typically treated as a manufactured device. This paper briefly reviews the early history of BRB research and offers state-of-the-art views on the design criteria required to obtain stable and reliable performance. Representative project examples and up-to-date studies relevant to tall buildings are summarized.
