Impact of experience on government policy toward acceptance of Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (정부정책에 대한 경험이 수소 연료전지 자동차의 수용에 미치는 영향)

  • Korea government declared that "low carbon, green growth" through green technologies and clean energy to be the new national vision for the next 60 years(President's Liberation Day speech on Aug. 15, 2008). And succeeding "Green New Deal" plan involves nine core projects including energy saving, recycling, clean energy development. It is because hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, using electricity from chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, let out water which is a by-product of such chemical reaction instead of emitting harmful particulate and gases such as NOX, SOX and CO2 that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and its technology are drawing public attention as one of the sensible solutions in accomplishing "low carbon, green growth" agenda. Nevertheless There are many chances that let the people have a practical experience of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Sometimes new products, including hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, made by advanced technology can not penetrate through the market when it faces public skepticism that is stimulated from lack of knowledge and experience. That is the reason why not only cost benefit analyses and scientific risk assessments but also public acceptance studies toward hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have to be performed [Schulte, 2004]. This research address a need for comprehensive study on factors influencing public acceptance of hydrogen fuel cell car, specifically focusing on impacts of personal experience related to governmental science and technology policy toward public acceptance.

Green pathway to hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (수소 연료전지차로의 전환을 위한 녹색 전략)

  • This study analyzes transitions to a green path in transportation system in South Korea. We develop transportation system model with four new technology options, green cars; Hybrid electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid vehicle, electric vehicle and fuel cell vehicle. Among those technologies fuel cell vehicle is the best option assuming no GHG emissions when driving. We use MESSAGE model to get an optimal solution of pathway for high deployment of fuel cell vehicles under the Korea BAU transportation model. Among hydrogen production sources, off gas hydrogen is most economic since it is hardly used to other chemical sources or emits in South Korea. According to off gas hydrogen projection it can run 1.8 million fuel cell vehicles in 2040 which corresponds to 10% of all passenger cars expected in Korea in 2040. However, there are concerns associated with technology maturity, cost uncertainty which has contradictions. But clean pathway with off gas and renewable sources may provide a strong driving force for energy transition in transportation in South Korea.

  • A fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) could be an alternative solution to gasoline powered vehicles. The Korean and Japanese governments have played the midwifery role in the development of the FCEV industry. This study explores the difference in policy goals for FCEV between the two countries. Koreans recognized that FCEV was innovative technology and put forward the notion of technology pre-occupancy. Whereas, the Japanese government discovered that FCEV was one way to apply hydrogen mechanisms, so they identified the supply of hydrogen as one of the industries of interest, and have played the demiurge role. This study suggests that the role of government is to introduce eco-friendly vehicles, using the cases of Korean and Japanese governments, who introduced FCEV to the world first.

Performance Analysis of Hydrogen Based Hybrid System Using HOMER - a Case Study in South Korea (수소기반 신재생에너지 복합발전 시스템의 지역별 운영성과 분석 - HOMER를 활용한 사례 연구)

  • This study focuses on the performance of hydrogen energy based hybrid system in terms of system reliability of electricity generation. With this aim to evaluate the off-grid system of photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine, electrolyzer, fuelcell, $H_2$ tank and storage batteries, 14 different sites in South Korea are simulated using HOMER. Performance analysis includes simulation on the different sites, verification of operational behaviors on regional and seasonal basis, and comparison among a control group. The result shows that the generation performance of hydrogen powered fuelcell is greatly affected by geographical change rather than seasonal effect. In addition, as the latitude of the hybrid systems location decrease, renewable power output and penetration ratio (%) increase under constant electrical load. Therefore, the hydrogen based hybrid system creates the stability of electricity generation, which best suits in the southern part of South Korea.

Hydrogen Reduction of a Black Nickel Oxide Ore in a Fluidized-Bed Reactor without Sticking

  • A black nickel oxide powder, one of the commercial nickel oxide ores, was reduced by hydrogen gas in a batch-type fluidized-bed reactor in a temperature range of 350 to $500^{\circ}C$ and in a residence time range of 5 to 120 min. The hydrogen reduction behavior of the black nickel oxide was found to be somewhat different from that of green nickel oxide ore. For the black nickel oxide, the maximum temperature (below which nickel oxide particles can be reduced without any agglomeration) was significantly lower than that observed for the green nickel oxide. In addition, the best curve fittings of the Avrami model were obtained at higher values of the overall rate constant "k" and at lower values of the exponent "m", compared to those values for the green nickel oxide. It may be inferred from these results that the hydrogen reduction rate of the black nickel oxide is faster than that of the green nickel oxide in the early stages, but the situation reverses in the later stages. For the black nickel oxide ore, in spite of the low temperature sintering, it was possible to achieve a high degree fluidized-bed reduction at lower temperatures and at lower gas consumption rates than was possible for the green nickel oxide. In this regard, the use of black nickel oxide is expected to yield a benefit if its ore price is sufficiently lower than that of the green nickel oxide.

  • The production of hydrogen by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii UTEX 90, a marine green alga, was performed under dark fermentation. The effects of initial nitrogen and phosphorus concentration on the cell growth and the production of hydrogen and organic substances were investigated. In the growth stage, the maximum dry cell weight (DCW) was 3 g/l when the initial ammonium concentration was 15 mM. In the dark fermentation, the maximum hydrogen production was $3.5\;{\mu}mol/\;mg$ DCW when the initial nitrogen concentration was 7.5 mM. The nitrogen concentration had a greater effect on organic compound and hydrogen production than the phosphorus concentration during the dark fermentation. An investigation of the duration of dark fermentation showed that, at least until three days, dark fermentation should be prolonged for maximum hydrogen production.

Economic Evaluation of Domestic Photobiological Hydrogen Production (국내 광생물학적 수소생산의 경제성 평가)

  • This paper deals with an economic evaluation of domestic photobiological hydrogen production. We evaluate the economic feasibility of domestic photobiological hydrogen production utilizing green algae and cyanobacteria. In addition, we make some sensitivity analysis of hydrogen production prices by changing the values of input factors such as the price of a photo-bioreactor and the value of solar to hydrogen efficiency. The estimated hydrogen production price of the two-step indirect biophotolysis was 12,099won/kg$H_2$. It is expected that the hydrogen production price by the two-step indirect biophotolysis can be reduced to 2,143won/kg$H_2$ if the solar to hydrogen efficiency is increased to 10% and the price of a photo-bioreactor is decreased to $25/$m^2$. The two-step indirect biophotolysis is evaluated as uneconomical at this time, and we need to enhance the solar to hydrogen efficiency and to reduce the prices of the photo-bioreactor and system facilities.

Can Artificial Intelligence Boost Developing Electrocatalysts for Efficient Water Splitting to Produce Green Hydrogen?

  • Water electrolysis holds great potential as a method for producing renewable hydrogen fuel at large-scale, and to replace the fossil fuels responsible for greenhouse gases emissions and global climate change. To reduce the cost of hydrogen and make it competitive against fossil fuels, the efficiency of green hydrogen production should be maximized. This requires superior electrocatalysts to reduce the reaction energy barriers. The development of catalytic materials has mostly relied on empirical, trial-and-error methods because of the complicated, multidimensional, and dynamic nature of catalysis, requiring significant time and effort to find optimized multicomponent catalysts under a variety of reaction conditions. The ultimate goal for all researchers in the materials science and engineering field is the rational and efficient design of materials with desired performance. Discovering and understanding new catalysts with desired properties is at the heart of materials science research. This process can benefit from machine learning (ML), given the complex nature of catalytic reactions and vast range of candidate materials. This review summarizes recent achievements in catalysts discovery for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The basic concepts of ML algorithms and practical guides for materials scientists are also demonstrated. The challenges and strategies of applying ML are discussed, which should be collaboratively addressed by materials scientists and ML communities. The ultimate integration of ML in catalyst development is expected to accelerate the design, discovery, optimization, and interpretation of superior electrocatalysts, to realize a carbon-free ecosystem based on green hydrogen.

A Study on the Variation of Unit Price of Hydrogen Fuel by Difference of Fuel Measuring Method (수소 충전소 연료계량방법의 차이에서 발생하는 연료단가의 상이점에 대한 고찰)

  • Korea government decides to build one hundred hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) until 2020 and tries to disseminate HRS and boosts HRS market in korea. Naepo HRS in chungnam province has been operated for last one full year of 2016 and recorded 2,520 times full charge for the hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles and total 6,016 kg hydrogen fueling for the 25 units of hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. Raw fuel of hydrogen from tube trailer measured by pressure, converting into weight of hydrogen and shows 19.6% surplus with final charged weight by dispenser. This result is caused measuring errors. Measured charged errors between dispenser and Mass flow meter was determined 13.13%.

  • This paper is aiming to estimate the mutual influence of the stack cooling performances with the operation modes of the thermal management system for the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The heat capacity of the thermal management system was measured by varying the operating modes such as stack cooling heat exchanger only (Mode 1), stack cooling and electric devices cooling heat exchangers (Mode 2), and stack cooling and electric devices cooling heat exchangers with an operation of the condenser (Mode 3).As the results, Performance of the thermal management system (TMS) at Mode 3 decreased up to 34.0%, compared with the result of the Mode 1. In addition, in order to optimize the performance of TMS, the entropy change of stack cooling heat exchanger using irreversibility analysis technique was analyzed with the relationship between entropy generation and entering air velocity of the thermal management system.
