  • The improved high-performance Fe-based perovskite-type oxides ($La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}M_xFe_{1-x}O_3$, M = Cu, Cr, Ni) were synthesized by a citrate method and characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD and NMR spectroscopy analyses. The characterization analyses revealed that the stoichiometric amounts of lattice oxygen were existed in all of perovskite samples except for a nickel-doped perovskite. Fe-based perovskites exhibited a surprising result for ortho-para $H_2$ spin conversion reaction, indicating two orders of magnitude higher conversions and conversion rates than commercial $Fe_2O_3$. It was considered that this conversion difference might be attributed to the presence of oxygen vacancies in Fe-based perovskites prepared in this study.

  • Oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide are powerful inducers of cell damage, ageing, and apoptosis. Since clusterin, a 75-80 kDa mammalian glycoprotein, is frequently found to be inducible in apoptotic cells and tissues, this study inquired into whether this would be a protective mechanism against further cell death. The aim was to find out whether overexpression of clusterin could protect cells from oxidantinduced stress and apoptosis. To clarify this issue, we generated and analyzed stable cell lines expressing fusion proteins of a rat clusterin with an enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). When treated with varying concentrations of hydrogen peroxides, clusterin transfectants indeed showed increased resistance to apoptosis and exhibited a much higher survival rate than mock-transfected cells. On the other hand, neither intracellular re-distribution nor local concentration of clusterin-EGFP was observed, which leaves the question open about its anti-apoptotic mechanism. In conclusion, the overexpression of clusterin provides a means for protecting cells against oxidative stress and subsequent cell death.

  • Syngas combustion characteristics of mass produced oxygen carrier particle (OCN706-1100) were investigated in a pressurized fluidized bed reactor using simulated syngas and air as reactants for reduction and oxidation, respectively. The oxygen carrier showed high fuel conversion, high $CO_2$ selectivity, and low CO concentration at reduction conditions and no NO emission at oxidation conditions. Moreover, OCN706-1100 particle showed good regeneration ability during successive reduction-oxidation cyclic tests up to the 10th cycle. Fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity decreased and CO emission increased as temperature increased. These results can be explained by trend of calculated equilibrium CO concentration with temperature. However, fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity increased and CO emission decreased as pressure and gas residence time increased.

  • In this study, we evaluated the cytoprotective effects of antioxidative substances in hydrogen peroxide ($H_{2}O_{2}$) treated Mel-Ab melanocytes. Tested substances include selenium, quercetin, green tea (GT) extract, and several vitamins (ascorbic acid, Trolox, and folic acid). Of these, both quercetin and GT extract were found to have strong cytoprotective effects on $H_{2}O_{2}$induced cell death. We also examined additive effects, but no combination of two of any of the above substances was found to act synergistically against oxidative damage in Mel-Ab cells. Nevertheless, a multi-combination of GT extract, quercetin, and folic acid appeared to prevent cellular damage in a synergistic manner, which suggests that combinations of antioxidants may be of importance, and that co-treatment with antioxidants offers a possible means of treating vitiligo, which is known to be related to melanocyte oxidative stress.

  • In this study, the effect of the time step specified in a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation on load response is analyzed and the drag coefficients of the floating body of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) are estimated. By evaluating the error in the FOWT load response and the change in the drag-coefficient values based on the density of the time intervals, this study aims to establish a time-interval setting that minimizes the time and cost of CFD simulations for selecting drag-coefficient values. Practical CFD utilization strategies necessary for the calibration of medium-to high-fidelity analysis tools are presented. Based on a comparative analysis of CFD simulations conducted at various time intervals, the results confirmed that under a certain time interval that sufficiently considers various factors, the accuracy of the FOWT response with respect to density shows minimal differences, thereby providing an efficient utilization method for CFD simulations in FOWT design and analysis.

  • Efficient and inexpensive hydrogen storage is an essential prerequisite for the utilization of hydrogen, one of the new and clean energy sources for $21^{st}$ century. In this review, several storage techniques are briefly reviewed and compared. Especially, adsorption/storage via physisorption at low temperature, by using nanoporous adsorbents, is reviewed and evaluated for further developments. The adsorption over a porous material at low temperature is currently investigated deeply to fulfill the storage target. In this review, several characteristics needed for the high hydrogen adsorption capacity are introduced. It may be summarized that following characteristics are necessary for high storage capacity over porous materials: i) high surface area and micropore volume, ii) narrow pore size, iii) strong electrostatic field, and iv) coordinatively unsaturated sites, etc. Moreover, typical results demonstrating high storage capacity over nanoporous materials are summarized. Storage capacity up to 7.5 wt% at liquid nitrogen temperature and 80 atm is reported. Competitive adsorbents that are suitable for hydrogen storage may be developed via intensive and continuous studies on design, synthesis, manufacturing and modification of nanoporous materials.

  • The global restriction on pollutant emissions and the soaring of crude oil price are expected to result in the change of future transportation system. Hydrogen is considered to be the leading candidate as an alternative energy source before other new alternative energy sources emerge. Scientists anticipate that hydrogen fuel gas turbine engine and fuel cell will be the power plant of the aircraft in the near future. To realize the aircraft powered by fuel cell system in the future, the technologies such as fuel cell with higher energy density, compressed gas or liquid storage system of hydrogen fuel, and efficient and lightweight electric motor have to be developed first.

  • Cu-Ni alloys with unidirectionally aligned pores were prepared by freeze-drying process of CuO-NiO/camphene slurry. Camphene slurries with dispersion stability by the addition of oligomeric polyester were frozen at $-25^{\circ}C$, and pores in the frozen specimens were generated by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air. The green bodies were hydrogen-reduced at $300^{\circ}C$ and sintered at $850^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that CuO-NiO composite powders were completely converted to Cu-Ni alloy without any reaction phases by hydrogen reduction. The sintered samples showed large and aligned parallel pores to the camphene growth direction, and small pores in the internal wall of large pores. The pore size and porosity decreased with increase in CuO-NiO content from 5 to 10 vol%. The change of pore characteristics was explained by the degree of powder rearrangement in slurry and the accumulation behavior of powders in the interdendritic spaces of solidified camphene.
