From Renewable Electricity to Green Hydrogen: Production and Storage Challenges for a Clean Energy Future

  • Decentralized energy production without greenhouse gas emissions from renewable energy sources despite their advantage and environmental impact suffers from the problem of intermittent and fluctuating supply depending on weather conditions. To overcome this problem, energy storage is essential to enable reliable and continuous supply of the load. Hydrogen is one of the most promising energy storage solutions because it is easily transportable and can be used as fuel or as a raw material for the production of other chemicals.In this article, we will focus on hydrogen energy storage techniques using photovoltaic systems. We will review the different types of hydrogen storage structuresfor several applications, including residential and commercial buildings, as well as industry and transportation (electric vehicles using PEFMC fuel cells).

75kW 용융탄산염 연로전지[MCFC] 스택 운전 결과 (The Operating Results of the 75kW MCFC Stack)

  • A 75kW MCFC stack with the reactive area of 9,600cm$^2$ has been operated and validated in Boryeong thermal power plant. The 75kW MCFC stack was installed at the end of November 28, 2008 and started initial operation on December 23, 2008 after pretreated for about 20 days. At initial load operation, the stack showed the Open Circuit Voltage of 137V, which approaches the theoretical value. At the early stage of rated power operation, the stack displayed the voltage of 104V at the current of 754A and reached the maximum generating power of 78.5kW DC. This stack has been operated for 2,890 hours until April, 2009. In addition, the operation time of rated power records 1890 hours. This Operating result is scheduled to be reflected the design of l25kW stack.

  • In the hope of realizing carbon neutrality, Korea has established the goal of expanding the supply of hydrogen electric vehicles through a roadmap to revitalize the hydrogen economy. A prerequisite for successful supply expansion is securing the safety of hydrogen electric vehicles. Certain parts, such as the hydrogen transport pipe and tank, in hydrogen electric vehicles are exposed to high-pressure hydrogen gas over long periods of time, so the hydrogen enters the grain boundary of material, resulting in a degradation of the parts referred to as hydrogen embrittlement. In addition, since the safety of parts utilizing hydrogen varies depending on the type of material used and its environmental characteristics, the necessity for the enactment of a hydrogen embrittlement regulation has emerged and is still being discussed as a Global Technical Regulation (GTR). In this paper, we analyze a hydrogen compatibility material evaluation method discussed in GTR and present a direction for the development of Korean-type hydrogen compatibility material evaluation methods.

건타입 버너의 수소 연소에 관한 연구 (Study of Hydrogen Combustion with n Gun-type Burner)

  • A gun-type burne. fur a LPG(Liquified Petroleum Gas) boiler was utilized for hydrogen combustion. The study was performed to obtain fundamental data prior to the design of a very low NO$\_$x/, hydrogen-fueled burner. First, numerical simulations were performed to predict mixing characteristics between air and fuel flows, and temperature distributions, etc. Experimental study was then performed to find out flame lengths, temperature distributions, and NO$\_$x/ concentrations. The results showed that a gun-type burner for a LPG boiler can be successfully used for hydrogen combustion without any major retrofitting. The hydrogen flame was very stable and 75 ppm of NO$\_$x/ in average was observed for the conditions considered in this study. Hydrogen combustion could be therefore a solution to avoid the problem of green-house gas(CO$_2$) if hydrogen becomes cost-effective.

촉매-플라즈마 반응 시스템을 이용한 황화수소의 처리특성 연구 (Characteristics of Hydrogen Sulfide Removal by a Catalyst-assisted Plasma System)

  • Catalyst-assisted plasma system with a DBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) reactor was used to remove hydrogen sulfide, which is one of the odorous species in this study. The ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and ${\beta}$-Zeolite catalysts impregnated by Ag, Cu and Mn species were employed as catalysts and their $H_2S$ removal characteristics under plasma irradiation were investigated. From the experimental study, we found that the $H_2S$ removal efficiency increases with decreasing space velocity in the system and increasing specific input energy. Furthermore, ${\beta}$-Zeolite catalysts are efficient to remove $H_2S$ than ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts. Especially, the catalysts impregnated by Ag have higher removal efficiency than other catalysts (Cu, Mn).

  • Hydrogen is promising a candidate for energy supporting the carbon neutrality policy for greenhouse gas reduction, which is being promoted in several countries, including Korea. Although challenging efforts-such as lowering the costs of green hydrogen production and fuel cells-remain, hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are expected to play a significant role in the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. In line with this objective, the hydrogen FCEV working group in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) compiled and revised international standards related to hydrogen refueling stations as of 2019. A well-established hydrogen quality management system based on the standard documents will increase the reliability of hydrogen charging stations and accelerate the use of FCEVs. In this study, among the published ISO standards and other references, the main requirements for managing charging stations and developing related techniques were summarized and explained. To respond preemptively to the growing FCEV market, a continuous hydrogen quality monitoring method suitable for use at hydrogen charging stations was proposed.

Construction of a Reporter Strain Pseudomonas putida for the Detection of Oxidative Stress Caused by Environmental Pollutants

  • A green fluorescent protein-based Pseudomonas putida reporter was successfully constructed and shown to be capable of detecting oxidative stress. In this whole-cell reporter, the promoter of the paraquat-inducible ferredoxin-$NADP^+$ reductase (fpr) was fused to a promoterless gfp gene on a broad-host-range promoter probe vector. Pseudomonas putida KT2440 harboring this reporter plasmid exhibited an increased level of gfp expression in the presence of redox-cycling agents (paraquat and menadione), hydrogen peroxide, and potential environmental pollutant chemicals such as toluene, paint thinner, gasoline, and diesel. Induction of fpr in the presence of these chemicals was confirmed using Northern blot analysis.

  • The heat transfer performance improvement in closed cooling water system of an electric power generation can be achieved by a corrosion control using corrosion inhibitors. The effect of trisodium phosphate and sodium nitrite upon carbon steel at various $Cl^{-1}$ ion containing water concentrations was examined by an integrated corrosion monitoring system. Nitrite was found to be the most effective inhibitor among tested inhibitors for carbon steel. The inhibiting process is considered as adsorption of nitrite ions in oxide layer which form a passive film on the carbon steel surface.

  • IS (요오드-황)프로세스의 HI 분해반응 공정에서의 적용을 목적으로 지르코니아 코팅 지지체를 이용하여 CVD법에 의해 수소분리막을 제작하였으며, 분리막으로서의 가능성을 평가하였다. 제작한 막의 형상 및 Si의 분포를 파악하기 위해 SEM 및 EPMA를 이용하여 분석하였다. 지르코니아를 코팅한 지지체를 이용하여 제작한 막에 Zr-Si-O층이 존재한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 제작한 막의 수소와 질소가스의 단일 성분 투과속도를 $300{\sim}600^{\circ}C$에서 측정하였다. $600^{\circ}C$에서 Z-1막에서의 수소투과속도는 $1{\times}10^{-7}\;mol{\cdot}Pa^{-1}{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$를 나타냈다. 질소에 대한 수소의 선택성은 Z-1 막에서 5.0, Z-2막에서 5.75를 나타냈다.

수소에너지의 에너지전환 활용을 둘러싼 갈등해결 방안: 디자인씽킹 방법론 적용을 중심으로 (Methods to Reduce Conflicts on Energy Transition to Hydro Energy: Focused on the Application of Design Thinking)

  • 본 논문은 디자인 씽킹 방법론을 통해 수소에너지를 국가 에너지전환에 활용할 때의 갈등을 해결하는 방안을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 연구결과, 디자인 씽킹을 통해 갈등 주체와 정부와 이해관계자 간 수소에너지 전환을 위한 정책의 공동 설계가 가능하며, 이는 공감과 협력을 바탕으로 하는 거시적인 접근 방법으로, 정책설계 프로세스에 대한 공감대를 초기에 형성할 수 있다. 수소 에너지 갈등에 대한 이해부터 시작하여 이해관계자의 갈등, 분쟁이나 소송의 결과에서 얻은 경험을 바탕으로 아이디어를 찾을 수 있다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 수소 에너지전환에 대한 추가적인 아이디어를 도출하고 프로토타이핑과 테스트를 통해 아이디어의 실현을 구체화 및 검증하게 된다. 갈등 개선을 위한 이해관계자들과의 협업은 새로운 가치를 창출할 수 있으며, 에너지 전환의 관점에서는 이해관계자의 갈등에 대한 공감과 통찰력이 새로운 협업 환경을 촉진할 수 있다. 또한 에너지 전환 문제점에 대한 정의를 재구성하는 과정에서 아이디에이션을 통해 다양한 관점을 반영하며, 프로토타입 정책을 시행하는 과정에서 이해관계자 간 갈등 협의의 프로세스에서 지속적인 공감으로 이해관계자의 의견을 통합하여 갈등을 예방할 수 있음을 알 수 있다.
