  • In case axial symmetrical bodies with varying cross sections such as volcanic conduits and unexploded ordnance (UXO), it is efficient to approximate them by adding the response of thin disks perpendicular to the axis of symmetry. To compute the vector magnetic and magnetic gradient tensor respones by such bodies, it is necessary to derive an analytical expression of the circular disk. Therefore, in this study, we drive closed-form expressions of the vector magnetic and magnetic gradient tensor due to a circular disk. First, the vector magnetic field is obtained from the existing gravity gradient tensor using Poisson's relation where the gravity gradient tensor due to the same disk with a constant density can be transformed into a magnetic field. Then, the magnetic gradient tensor is derived by differentiating the vector magnetic field with respect to the cylindrical coordinates converted from the Cartesian coordinate system. Finally, both the vector magnetic and magnetic gradient tensors are derived using Lipschitz-Hankel type integrals based on the axial symmetry of the circular disk.

  • In this study, the diffusion behaviors of C and Co in liquid phase sintering of WC-Co system were investigated whether these two components diffused in the same direction in case of having opposite gradient each other with not being $\eta$ phase. The green compacts with controlled compositions in not being of $\eta$ phase and gradient composition which one is WC-5Co-1.2%C, the other is WC-XCo-0.2%C (where X = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25) were sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ and then the diffusion behaviors of C and Co were investigated by analyses of compositional change, also determined for microstructure and microhardness. Also, same testing was carried out on the specimens with dual layers sintered in upright and reverse positions to evaluate the effect of gravity on the diffusion in liquid Co. From the results of this study, we can find the fact that the direction of diffusion for C and Co in WC-Co system during liquid phase sintering was different and the effect of gravity for the liquid was insignificant. Also other physical properties were changed on the diffusion of elements.

  • An elongated object in one direction can be approximated as a line segment. Here, the closed-form expressions of a line segment's vector magnetic and magnetic gradient tensor are required to interpret responses by a line segment. Therefore, the analytical expressions of the vector magnetic and magnetic gradient tensor are derived. The vector magnetic is converted from the existing gravity gradient tensor using Poisson's relation where the gravity gradient tensor caused by a line segment can be transformed into a vector magnetic. Then, the magnetic gradient tensor is derived by differentiating the vector magnetic with respect to each axis in the Cartesian coordinate system. The synthetic total magnetic data simulated by an iron pile on boreholes are inverted by a nonlinear inversion process so that the physical parameters of the iron pile, including the beginning point, the length, orientation, and magnetization vector are successfully estimated.

  • This paper's objective is to investigate the effect of gravity on a micropolar thermoelastic medium with voids. The problem is assessed according to the three-phase-lag model. An analysis of the resulting non-dimensional displacement, temperature variation, and internal stress of the study material is carried out and presented graphically. The non-dimensional displacement, temperature, micro-rotation, the change in the volume fraction field and stress of the material are obtained and illustrated graphically. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by different theories for different values of gravity, the phase-lag of the heat flux and the phase-lag of the temperature gradient. The numerical results reveal that gravity and relaxation times have a significant influence on the distribution of the field quantities. Some notable insights of interest are deduced from the investigation.

  • This paper presents results of interpretaton of gravity data by iterative nonlinear inversion methods. The gravity data are obtained by a theoretical formula for two-dimensional 2-layer structure. Depths to the basement of the structure are determined from the gravity data by four interative inversion methods. The four inversion methods used here are the Gradient, Gauss-Newton, Newton-Raphson, and Full Newton methods. Inversions are performed by using different initial guesses of depth for the over-determined, even-determined, and under-determined cases. This study shows that the depth can be determined well by all of the methods and most efficiently by the Newton-Raphson method.

  • This paper presents a procedure to recover sea surface heights (SSH) and free-air (FA) gravity anomalies from dense satellite altimeter SSH data with enhanced accuracies over the full spectrum of the gravity field. A wavenumber correlation filtering (WCF) of co-linear SSH tracks is developed for the coherent signals of sub-surface geological masses. Orbital cross-over adjustments with bias parameters are applied to the filtered SSH data, which are then separated into two groups of ascending and descending tracks and gridded with tensioned splines. A directional sensitive filter (DSF) is developed to reduce residual errors in the orbital adjustments that appear as track patterned SSH. Finally, FA gravity anomalies can be obtained by the application of a gradient filter on a high resolution estimate of geoid undulations after subtracting dynamic sea surface topography (DSST) from the SSH. These procedures are applied to the Geosat Geodetic Mission (GM) data of the southern oceans in a test area of ca. $900km\;\times{1,200}\;km$ to resolve geoid undulations and FA gravity anomalies to wavelengths of-10 km and larger. Comparisons with gravity data from ship surveys, predictions by least squares collocation (LSC), and 2 versions of NOAA's predictions using vertical deflections illustrate the performance of this procedure for recovering all elements of the gravity spectrum. Statistics on differences between precise ship data and predicted FA gravity anomalies show a mean of 0.1 mgal, an RMS of 3.5 mgal, maximum differences of 10. 2 mgal and -18.6 mgal, and a correlation coefficient of 0.993 over four straight ship tracks of ca. 1,600 km where gravity changes over 150 mgals.

  • The errors between track segments or at the cross-over points of shipborne gravity were successfully reduced by applying a cross-over error adjustment technique using satellite gravity. The integration of shipborne and satellite altimeter-implied free-air gravity anomalies after the cross-over error adjustment resulted in a high resolution gravity map which contains both short and long wavelength components. The successful adjustment of the cross-over errors in the shipborne gravity using the satellite gravity suggests that the shipborne gravity can be combined with the satellite anomalies characterized by a stable and long wavelength component. The resulting free-air anomaly map is evenly harmonized with both short and long wavelength anomalies. Thus the corrected anomaly map can be better used for the geological interpretation. Free-air anomalies with more than 140 mGal in total variations generally correspond to the seafloor topographic changes in their regional patterns. A series of gravity highs are aligned from the Korea Plateau to the Oki Island, which are interpreted to be caused by seamounts or volcanic topographies. The gravity minima along the western and southern shelf edge are associated not only with the local basement morphology and thick sediment fill at the continental margin, but also possibly with the crustal edge effect known for passive continental margins. Series of NE-trending linear anomalies are possibly caused by a swarm of volcanic intrusions followed the initial opening of the Ulleung Basin. The linear high anomalies in the Ulleung Plateau are terminated by the straightly NNW-trending anomalies with a sharp gradient in its western boundary which indicates a fault-line scarp. The opposite side adjoined with the fault-line scarp shows no correlation with the fault-line scarp in geometry indicating that the block might be horizontally slided from the north. A gravity high in contrast to the deepening in seafloor toward the northeastern central Ulleung Basin is probably responsible for the thin crust and shallow seated mantle. • In order to fabricate porous ceramics, hydrated sodium silicate was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction using anhydrous sodium silicate. The microstructural and the structural characteristics of the expanded ceramics were observed depending on heat treatment temperature (550, 600, 650, $700^{\circ}C$) and then the effect of these characteristics on the compressive strength and the temperature gradient was investigated. As the heat treatment temperature was increased, the compressive strength was decreased from $0.717KN/cm^2\;(550^{\circ}C)\;to\;0.166KN/cm^2\;(700^{\circ}C)$. The temperature gradient was increased with increasing the experimental temperature regardless of the heat treatment temperature. The temperature gradient of the expanded ceramics which was heat treated at $650^{\circ}C\;was\;300^{\circ}C$. The bulk specific gravity, porosity, pore size, pore characteristics and wall thickness were varied depending on heat treatment temperature, and the compressive strength and the temperature gradient were governed by the complex effects of these factors.

  • Geomagnetism was used to control the attitude of the small scientific satellite at low altitude in sun-synchronous orbit. First, we analyzed the telemetry data. The rotation state of the satellite, can be known from the magnitude and variations of the magnetic field which is measured from the 3 axis magnetometer. In axisymmetric case, it is possible to control the attitude of the satellite by changing the rotation velocity of each 3 axis. The algorithm and the program were developed to calculate the supply time of the current operating the magnetorquer. This attitude control can be applied when the satellite is in tumbling motion and after passive control is attained by the Gravity gradient boom.
