Generally the dynamic characteristics of stone wall structures depend on several factors such as contact, the type of interlocking bonding stones, and the filling materials. This paper describes a non-destructive technique for diagnosis of historic masonry stone structures using the measurement of natural frequency technique. For this purpose, the castle wall of Nag-An Folk Town located in Sunchon, Korea was selected as a model. The Nag-An Town Castle is one of the well maintained historical remains constructed in the Chosun Kingdom of Korea. The construction started in 1397 A.D and was finished in 1626 A.D.
The non-mortar castle wall is 1470m long and the average height is 4m with a width of 3 4m. The exterior of the wall is bonded with 1 2 m rectangular rough-faced stone and the inside of the wall is filled with gravel. The traditional village still remains inside the Nag-An Town Castle, and they have a regional food festival every October. Transverse vibrations were measured at 8 points around the castle. The measured natural frequency of the first mode was 26Hz 41Hz, and the shear modulus of filling material was 2.142 x $10^3$ ~ 8.915 x $10^3$kgf/$cm^2$ . With these results, it may be assumed that the filling material is gravel or a sand-gravel mixture. It is expected that the information provided by this paper will be useful for addressing the maintenance problems of the old castle walls.
Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is a zero slump concrete consisting of a mixture of cementitious materials, sand, dense graded aggregates and water. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of aggregate type on strength and abrasion resistance of RCC made by using granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as partial replacement of cement. Mix proportions of RCC were finalized based upon the optimum water content achieved in compaction test. Two different series of RCC mixes were prepared with two different aggregates: crushed gravel and limestone aggregates. In both series, cement was partially replaced with GGBS at a replacement level of 20%, 40% and 60%. Strength Properties and abrasion resistance of the resultant mixes was investigated. Abrasion resistance becomes an essential parameter for understanding the acceptability of RCC for rigid pavements. Experimental results show that limestone aggregates, with optimum percentage of GGBS, perform better in compressive strength and abrasion resistance as compared to the use of crushed gravel aggregates. Observed results are further supported by stoichiometric analysis of the mixes by using basic stoichiometric equations for hydration of major cement compounds.
The Korean terms of sediment grain size demonstrated in the 30 textbooks of elementary, middle, and high schools and university levels are compared and reviewed, and the problems of its use and alternative terms are proposed. The Korean terms of sediment grain size shown in the most textbooks are the translated terms of the Udden-Wentworth grade scale, and the different terms have been used in these textbooks. In the case of gravels, granule, cobble, and boulder have commonly been translated as wangmorae (king sand), janjagal (fine gravel), wangjagal (king gravel), and pyoryeog (drift gravel) or georyeog (large gravel), respectively. However, it is regarded to be reasonable that they are termed as janjagal, jungjagal (medium gravel), keunjagal (large gravel), and wangjagal, respectively. Adjectives such as 'maeu goun' (very fine), 'goun' (fine), 'junggan' (medium), 'gulgeun' (coarse), and 'maeu gulgeun' (very coarse), attached with each sediment name seem to be suitable to terms for sediments smaller than gravels. Silt has been commonly termed as misa (fine sand) in many textbooks, but it may be appropriate that silt is expressed as silt. Finally, mud, which is a mixture of silt and clay, should be named ito (mud) as shown in several textbooks including Dictionary of Korean Earth Science, though mud has been frequently termed as jinheug (slush or watery soil) in the most of textbooks for elementary and middle school students, and some high school and university textbooks.
Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need for cable backfill materials to be maintained at a low thermal resistivity during the service period. Temperatures greater than $50^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal runaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aimed at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. The results of Dong-rim river sand (relatively uniform) show that as water content level increases, thermal resistivity tends to decrease, whereas the thermal resistivity on dry condition is very high value($260^{\circ}C-cm/watt$). In addition, other materials(such as Jinsan granite screenings, A-2(sand and gravel mixture), E-1(rubble and granite screenings mixture) and SGFC(sand, gravel, fly-ash and cement mixture)) are well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity($100^{\circ}C-cm/watt$ when dry). Based on this research, 4 types of improved materials were suggested as the environmentally friendly backfill materials with low thermal resistivity.
Between 40,000 and 60,000 liters of light oil were spilled when an underground pipe broke at a newly constructed landfill site in coastal area, Korea. Methods were presented to examine the subsurface distribution of the contaminants in hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. As results, large quantities of oil and grease were found to have migrated horizontally at the site. Oil and grease plume at concentrations of 38-88 mg/kg was formed horizontally through silty sand with gravel fill and the vertical movement of the contaminants was thought to be limited to groundwater level between 2 and 4 m corresponding to sea water level. Right after finding the leakage area, the early action of excavation and pumping out the mixture of groundwater and oil was taken and it was proved to be very effective for preventing further contamination. Two months after the leakage, oil and grease in sea water sample near contaminated area was not detectable.

Recently the centrifuge test has been used increasingly to clarify a problem of seepage in dam. However, one of the most difficult challenges in the testing is to conform permeability properties of model ground to the prototype. In order to resolve the problem, a few solutions, such as an increase of pore water viscosity and a regulation of water permeability, are suggested. Although the use of prototype materials is principles if a model test is carried out, the materials of similarity gradation is used in the centrifuge model test because of the nature of the model test for dam. Therefore, we choose the latter method for model ground materials. In this study, the permeability properties of soil-bentonite mixtures are studied through the permeation test using triaxial compaction test apparatus.
This research was conducted to determine the effect of interruption layer for capillary rise on the sand based growing media when growing Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) on soil reclamation and saline water irrigation. Growing media profile consists of three layers as top soil of 30 cm, 20 cm of the interruption layer for capillary rise and 10 cm of reclaimed paddy soil. Growing media profile was packed in 30 cm diameter column pots. The top soil was a mixture of sand dredged up from Lake Bhunam Tae Ahn, Korea and peat at the ratio of 95:5 by volume. Bottom part of column was covered with plastic net and the pots were soaked into 5 cm depth saline water reservoir with salinity $3-5\;dS\;m^{-1}$. Kentucky bluegrass was established by sod and irrigated using $2\;dS\;m^{-1}$ saline water ($5.7\;mm\;day^{-1}$) in 3 days interval. The results showed that the largest accumulation of salt in the spring with electrical conductivity in saturated extract (ECe) of $5.4\;dS\;m^{-1}$ and sodium absorption ratio (SAR) 34.0 in growing media without the interruption layer for capillary rise and ECe of $4.6\;dS\;m^{-1}$ and SAR 8.24 at growing media using gravel as the interruption layer for capillary rise material. The interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel and coarse sand reduced the accumulation of Na by 16% and 25%, ECe by 7% and 13% in the growing media. Visual quality of Kentucky bluegrass was higher in growing media with the interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel than no interruption layer by 8.3 compared to 7.9 in rates. The interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel and coarse sand enhanced the visual quality by 4.1 and 4.0%, root length by 50 and 38%, and root dry weight by 35 and 17% of Kentucky bluegrass, and reduced the accumulation of Na by 16% and 25%, ECe by 7% and 13% in the growing media.
In this study, aimed at determining the elastic modulus of deep mixed samples, 320 test specimens were developed by mixing 8%, 10%, 12%, and 14% of stabilizer mixture in the granular conditions of clay, sand and gravel. Uniaxial compression tests were carried out using these specimens, and the uniaxial compression strength and strain were analyzed to determine the secant elastic modulus and tangent elastic modulus. Laboratory test results showed that the uniaxial compression strength of all deep mixed samples increased with increasing curing time and stabilizer mixing ratio, and that the secant elastic modulus and the tangen elastic modulus also increased. The increase of the elastic modulus according to the curing period turned out greater in the tangent elastic modulus than in the secant elastic modulus. In order to measure elastic modulus with changes in stabilizer mixing ratio, the correlation coefficient between the elastic modulus for stabilizer mixing ratio of 8% and that of 10%, 12% and 14% was calculated respectively by the specimen condition. The elastic modulus tended to increase as the grain size in a deep mixed specimen increased. The distribution of grain size that had the greatest effect appeared when the composition ratio of sand was high. On the other hand, the increase in the elastic modulus was larger in the sand specimens than in the clay and gravel specimens. Based on these results, it is suggested that a pertinent soil parameter of the deep mixed ground in the field may be obtained by the particle size distribution and the mixing ratio of stabilizer of the deep mixed soil.
Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need for cable backfill materials that can maintain a low thermal resistivity (less than 5$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt) even while they are subjected to high temperatures for prolonged periods. Temperatures greater than 5$0^{\circ}C$ to 6$0^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal nlnaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aiming at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. Tests were called out for DonUing river sand, a relatively uniffrm sand of very high thermal resistivity (5$0^{\circ}C$ -cnuwatt at 10% water content, 26$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt when dry), and Jinsan granite screenings, and A-2(sand and gravel mixture), E-1 (rubble and granite screenings mixture), a well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity (about 35$^{\circ}C$ -cm/watt when at 10 percent water content, 10$0^{\circ}C$-cm/watt when dry). Based on this research, 3 types of backfill materials were suggested for improved materials with low thermal resistivity.

For the purpose of developing a PE fiber-reinforced highly ductile cementitious composite having high tensile strain capacity more than 2% under the condition of containing aggregates with large particle size, this study investigated the tensile behavior of composites according to the particle size and distribution of aggregates in the composite. Compared with the mixture containing silica sand of which particle size is less than 0.6 mm, mixtures containing river sand and/or gravel with the maximum particle size of 2.36 mm, 4.75 mm, 5.6 mm, 6.7 mm were considered in the experimental design. The particle size distributions of aggregates were adjusted for the optimized distribution curves obtained from modified A&A model by blending different sizes of aggregates. All the mixtures presented clear strain-hardening behavior in the direct tensile tests. The mixtures with the blended aggregates to meet the optimum curves of aggregate size distributions showed higher tensile strain capacity than the mixture with silica sand. It was also found that the tensile strain capacity was improved as the maximum size of aggregate increased which resulted in wider particle size distribution. The mixtures with the maximum size of 5.6 mm and 6.7 mm presented very high tensile strain capacities of 4.83% and 5.89%, respectively. This study demonstrated that it was possible to use coarse aggregates in manufacturing highly ductile fiber-reinforced cementitous composite by adjusting the particle size distribution.
