  • In this paper. we propose an efficient method for implementing hi-directional pixel-based focusing(BiPBF) based on a sparse array imaging technique. The proposed method can improve spatial resolution and frame rate of ultrasound imaging with reduced hardware complexity by synthesizing transmit apertures with a small number of sparsely distributed subapertures. As the distance between adjacent subapertures increases, however. the image resolution tends to decrease due to the elevation of grating lobes. Such grating lobes can be eliminated in conventional synthetic aperture imaging techniques. On the contrary, grating lobes arisen from employing sparse synthetic transmit apertures can not be eliminated, which has been shown analytically in this paper. We also propose the condition and method for suppressing the grating lobes below -40dB, which is generally required in practical imaging. by placing the transmit focal depth at a near depth and properly selecting the subaperture distance in Proportion to receive aperture size. The results of both the Phantom and in vivo experiments show that the proposed method implements two-wav dynamic focusing using a smaller number of subapertures, resulting in reduced system complexity and increased frame rate.

  • Confocal scanning microscopy (CSM) has been reported as an excellent method using the optical probe in scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Transmission or reflection confocal scanning microscopy (TCSM, RCSM) has been used in the three-dimensional reconstruction of specimen or the non-destructive measurement in vivo. The axial movement of the primary focal point having the information of specimen gives a good measurement performance with the great sensitivity. Application of the confocal theory and astigmatism to displacement measurement sensor uses the aperture as the pinhole or slit after collecting lens relating to confocal response in non-contact measurement; and astigmatic lens using four-segments detector as short-range sensor, long-range one combining the grating and rotary one hating the rotary directional grating. The aperture type can play an ...

  • The genetic algorithm (GA) is regarded as one of the best ways for determining a global solution. Because it does not require calculating the design sensitivity differently from the ordinary gradient-based method, it is appropriate for the design problem in the ultra-high frequency range; the ordinary gradient-based method has difficulty in calculating the sensitivity in this range. This paper deals with nano-aperture grating topology optimization based on the GA and the ON/OFF method. The objective of this study is to maximize the transmittance in the measuring area. The simulation and optimization processes are carried out by using the commercial package COMSOL associated with Matlab programming. The final optimal design gives around 21% performance improvement, compared with the initial model.

  • 1)iscussed in this paper are the effects of phase modulation on the line spread functions (LSF) and MTFs of ;I binocular objective system. The binocular objective lens is made in Korea. It has rotationally symmetric aberrations. The LSFs and MTFs are measured experimentally. The phase modulation is carried out by applying phase retardation n on the aperture. The area where the phase is not retarded presents a double annular type. The OTF curves of phase modulated aperture are compared with that of unmodulated aperture. The comparison shows that there is the aberration compensation effect in aberration loaded system. Therefore the performance of many optical system can be improved without any loss of light energy by properly modulating the phase on the aperture.

  • A focusing grating coupler (FGC) was not fabricated by the 'Continuous Path Control' writing strategy but by an electron-beam lithography system of more general exposure mode, which matches not only the address grid with the grating period but also an integer multiple of the address grid resolution (5 nm), To more simplify the fabrication, we are able to reduce a process step without large decrease of pattern quality by excluding a conducting material or layer such as metal (Al, Cr, Au), which are deposited on top or bottom of an e-beam resist to prevent charge build-up during e-beam exposure. A grating pitch period and an aperture feature size of the FGC designed and fabricated by e-beam lithography and reactive ion etching were ranged over 384.3 nm to 448.2 nm, and $0.5{\times}0.5mm^2$ area, respectively, This fabrication method presented will reduce processing time and improve the grating quality by means of a consideration of the address grid resolpution, grating direction, pitch size and shapes when exposing. Here our investigations concentrate on the design and efficient fabrication results of the FGC for coupling from slab waveguide to a spot in free space.

  • The near-field subwavelength squint-less focusing system of a phased array antenna is designed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. The Huygens-Fresnel principle is applied to numerical simulation for calculation of the phased array antenna at microwave frequency. It was shown that beam squinting can be eliminated, utilizing true-time optical delay lines based on a chirped fiber grating in the proposed system. Furthermore, subwavelength focusing with high numerical aperture can be achieved by considering the fact that the array elements of the phased-array antenna can be treated as diffractive elements in an optical lens system. Also, side lobes can be suppressed by decreasing the distance between element antennas to less than half of the wavelength.

  • In this paper, the gain of the square hem antenna is enhanced with $3{\times}3$ latticed aperture. In order to get the uniform field distribution on the aperture, the different thicknesses of dielectric plates for the phase compensation are inserted into the center and the edge of the aperture respectively. The proposed horn antenna is designed at 12.5 GHz band, and then the analysis of the field distribution on the aperture is performed by using FDTD method. The radiation pattern is also calculated from the analysis. Based on the measured data, it is verified that the gain of a horn antenna with latticed aperture is 18 dBi and this is 2 dB gain enhancement compare with a normal horn antenna without latticed aperture.

  • We present a novel concept of a phase-shifting diffraction-grating interferometer, which is intended for the optical testing of concave mirrors with high precision. The interferometer is configured with a single reflective diffraction grating, which performs multiple functions of beam splitting, beam recombination, and phase shifting. The reference and test wave fronts are generated by means of reflective diffraction at the focal plane of a microscope objective with large numerical aperture, which allows testing fast mirrors with low f-numbers. The fiber-optic confocal design is adopted for the microscope objective to focus a converging beam on the diffractive grating, which greatly reduces the alignment error between the focusing optics and the diffraction grating. Translating the grating provides phase shifting, which allows measurement of the figure errors of the test mirror to nanometer accuracy.

  • Spectral Beam Combining (SBC) is used for a high-power fiber laser in order to overcome the power limitation of single fiber laser. In SBC, several laser bwams with different wavelengths are combined to obtain a single-aperture beam by diffraction grating. The combining efficiency is dependent on a linewidth, beam quality and specific wavelength of each beam among others. In this paper, we consider the method of a wavelength monitoring and a feedback control of laser diodes used as seeds of laser beams to obtain optimum combining conditions. In order to measure the wavelengths of multi-beam, we use the high resolution camera and diffraction grating with 1,800l/mm. The experiment results show the possibility of feedback control of a current and temperature of multi-seed laser diodes to obtain optimum wavelengths for SBC.
