  • The microstructure changes of the matrix and the graphites were observed by optical microscope and the average hardness number was investigated according to the heat-treatment conditions of the cast iron rods by the horizontal continuous casting process in 35 mm diameter. The three kinds of heat-treatments were introduced. The first treatment was performed at 900, 950, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and the second treatment was conducted during 5, 10, and 15 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$ respectively. The third treatments were the two-cyclic heat-treatment and the three-cyclic heat-treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ during 2 hours. The matrix microstructure of the specimens to be treated at various temperatures for 2 hours was the ferrite to be transformed from the pearlite The hardness number of the center of the samples according to the heat treatment time at $1000^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of the surface area because of the martensite formation in the center. Also, in the cyclic heat-treatments, the hardness number of the two-cycle treatment specimens increased because of the martensite formation in the center.

  • The graphites as airtight structure seals prevent high-pressure and high-temperature gas from flowing into actuator of propulsion system and generate lubricant film during wear procedure to assist lubricant and sealing. In this study, the tribological characteristics of the graphite in high-temperature are evaluated. In order to evaluate the tribological characteristics of high density graphite(HK-6), variables which are temperature, sliding speed and contact load are set. this study suggest optimized environment conditions through the wear properties of graphite. Consequeantly, high temperature is better than at room temperature to generate lubricant film, so that friction coefficient of graphite is lower at high temperature than at room temperature.

  • This study aims to investigate on the effects of the microstructures on the wear characteristics of the different grey cast iron(GC) and spheroidal ductile cast iron(DCI). Wear test using wear tester of pin-on-disc type was carried out under the conditions of load 47.2N , velocity 0.2m/s, distance 4000m. At the GC, Wear rates depend on graphite type and oxide layer formed at wear surface. Weak rosette graphites are easily broken and formed wear debris over 30 ${\mu}m$. This wear debris occurs scuffing at wear surface. As a result of surface deformation, Narrow regions of the matrix between the graphite flakes and the contact surface lead to the failure of the necks. Wear rate for the DCI depended on hardness of matrix more than size of graphite.

  • Abstract It has been attempted to make the copper-graphite composites by deposition of copper on the surface of graphite through the hydrogen reduction of copper chlorides. Both KISH and natural graphites of less than 325 mesh were used as substrates and the hydrogen reduction also was conducted in the range of 350-50$0^{\circ}C$. The distribution of copper on the surface of graphite was found to increase with the decrease of reduction temperature. In addition. the partial pressure of hydrogen played an important role in the overall rate of reduction which was substantially dominated by the chemical reaction on the surface of each particle. It was concluded that the reduction temperature should be maintained as low as possible to accomplish the well distribution of copper in the composites.

  • Surface modification of the silicon-coated graphite was carried out at $200^{\circ}C\~800^{\circ}C$ under hydrogen atmosphere. The silicon-coated graphites were prepared by fluidized-bed spray coating method. The components of silicon films prepared on the graphite consist of SiO, $SiO_x\;(1. The components of silicon films at $200^{\circ}C$ of heat treatment brought on the higher fraction of SiO and $SiO_x$ than that of $SiO_2$. However, inactive $SiO_2$ fraction increases with increase of the heat treatment temperature. The high content of SiO and $SiO_x$ in the silicon film on graphite leads to the higher discharge capacity in our experimental range.

  • Natural graphite is obtained from an abandoned open-cast mine and purified by a simple, eco-friendly and affordable beneficiation process including ball milling and flotation process. Both raw graphite (55 wt %) and its concentrate (85 wt %) were electrochemically tested in order to evaluate these materials as anode materials for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. It was found that both raw and purified graphites exhibit good electrochemical activities with respect to lithium and sodium ions through completely different reaction mechanisms. The encouraging results demonstrated in this work suggest that both raw and graphite concentrates after flotation could be used respectively for stationary and embedded applications. This strategy would help in developing local electrical storage systems with a significantly low environmental footprint.

  • The graphitization is affected by the addition of small amount of the elements, such as Si, Al, Ni, B, Cr and Mn etc. Boron is well known as the most effective element for the graphitization of cementite in high carbon steels. But a study on quantitative analysis of B effect on the graphitization is few reported. Therefore the effect of boron addition in Fe-0.65%C-1.0%Si-0.5%Mn steels on the graphitization is investigated quantitatively using hardness tester, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, neutron induced microscopic radiography. The graphitization in high carbon steels is promoted with 0.003~0.005%B addition. But the graphitization in steels which has no boron takes long holding time at $680{\sim}720^{\circ}C$. The hardness of quenched steel containing 0.003%B is higher than that of 0.005%B added steel due to complete dissolution of fine graphites into the austenite. The 0.003%B added high carbon steel graphitized at $680^{\circ}C$ for 25hr is useful steel for the agricultural implements and automobile parts which needed a good formability and high hardness.

  • The surface of natural graphite was modified by the use of hydrogen peroxide and evaluated as an anode material for lithium ion capacitors (LICs). The surface treatment was carried out under various ultrasonic conditions of 200, 300, and 400W, which were applied to a mixture of natural graphite and hydrogen peroxide solution for 1 h. While the bulk structure was maintained, the hexagonal symmetry and physical properties of natural graphite, such as BET surface area, tap density, and particle size, were affected by the surface treatment. FT-IR and XPS measurements confirmed the signature of C=O on the surface of graphite samples after treatment. Both the pristine and surface-treated graphites showed a similar reversible capacity of $370mAhg^{-1}$, and the coulombic efficiency of surface-treated graphite decreased with higher ultrasonic energies (89.1%, 89.0%, and 88.0% for 200, 300, and 400 W) comparing with pristine graphite (89.4%). The capacity retention of LICs was greatly improved with the treated natural graphite. The graphite treated under the ultrasonic energy of 300 W and pristine natural graphite showed capacity retention of 77.5% and 42.9%, implying that the surface treatment was an effective method for the improvement of natural graphite as an anode material for LICs.

  • Using first principles density functional theory the formation energies of various binary compounds of lithium graphite and its homologues were calculated. Lithium and graphite react to form $Li_1C_6$ (+141 mV) but not form $LiC_4$ (-143 mV), $LiC_3$ (-247 mV) and $LiC_2$ (-529 mV) because they are less stable than lithium metal itself. Properties of structure and reaction potentials of $C_5B$, $C_5N$ and $B_3N_3$ materials as iso-structural graphite were studied. Boron and nitrogen substituted graphite and boron-nitrogen material as a iso-electronic structured graphitic material have longer graphene layer spacing than that of graphite. The layer spacing of $Li_xC_6$, $Li_xC_5B$, $Li_xC_5N$ materials increased until to x=1, and then decreased until to x=2 and 3. Nevertheless $Li_xB_3N_3$ has opposite tendency of layer spacing variation. Among various lithium compositions of $Li_xC_5B$, $Li_xC_5N$ and $Li_xB_3N_3$, reaction potentials of $Li_xC_5B$ (x=1-3) and $Li_xC_5$ (x=1) from total energy analyses have positive values against lithium deposition.
