This study investigated consumer grape recognition and preference, to improve grape quality. The questionnaire explored consumption frequency, purchasing locations, amounts purchased, general preferences, seedless/seeded preference, and external/internal quality factors. Answers to 519 questionnaires were analyzed both descriptively and quantitatively using SPSS for Windows(Version 14.0). The principal results were as follows: 46.1% of respondents purchased at wholemarket; 38.5% purchased 3-5 bunches at any one time; 76% preferred grapes to other fruits; and 49.8% purchased bigger(and not smaller) grapes. Most customers preferred seedless grapes. The most important external quality factor was bunch fullness and the most significant internal factor was sweetness.
Changes in volatile organic compounds were investigated during storage after electron beam irradiation. Grapes were irradiated at 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 kGy and stored for 1 month at $4^{\circ}C$. Butanol, hexanal, [E]-2-hexenal, hexanol, and 3-methyl-butanol were the major volatile organic compounds of grapes. The types of volatiles in irradiated grapes were similar to those of non-irradiated samples but concentration differed among treatments. Some volatile compounds decreased during storage, whereas others, especially the esters, increased. Concentration of most volatile compounds were higher in pre-stored grapes than in post-stored fruit (thus, during the 30 days after irradiation by e-beam). Consequently, concentration of volatile organic compounds either increased or decreased after e-beam irradiation but these changes did not correlate with irradiation dose.

The olive fly Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) is the key pest for olive cultivation worldwide. Substantial effort has been invested in the development of the sterile insect technique (SIT) to control this pest. One of the limitations to develop SIT technology for olive fruit fly is the low ability of wild females to lay eggs in other medium than olive fruits, and their slow adaptation to oviposition in artificial substrates. In the present study, fruit grapes were used as an alternative egg collection medium to harvest eggs and young larvae from freshly colonized wild strains originating from France, Italy, Spain and Croatia. The larvae were allowed to develop into the fruits until the second instar, before they were extracted out and further reared on a standard artificial diet. Furthermore, F1 to F4 female flies were alternatively offered wax bottles to oviposit. Finally, the performance of hybrid strains created from crosses between wild and long colonised flies was assessed. The results showed that females of all 4 wild strains readily oviposited eggs in grapes and from the F2 generation onward, females from all strains were adapted to laying eggs in wax bottles. No difference was observed in eggs and pupae production among all strains tested. The findings are discussed for their implications on SIT application against olive fruit fly.
In an attempt to test the storage life of late maturing-medium grapes, Sheridan, Tano Red and Muscat Bailey A cultivated widely in Korea, were selected as test samples. These grapes were treated with SO2 gas and packed with polyethylene film, then stored at 0$^{\circ}C$ under 90% RH. Total weight decreased with the storage days and the loss extent of Sheridan was the least. Abnormal grapes increased along with the storage days and occurred rapidly after 90% days. After 135 days, these were produced as the following order. Sheridan < Muscat Bailey A < Tano Red. The external appearances were deteriorated with the storage days. After 135 days, these indices of Sheridan, Muscat Bailey A and Tano Red wen 6.3, 5.0 and 1.7, respectively, showing the most satisfactory result from Sheridn. Water content decreased along with the storage days. The soluble solids content and the proportionality of sugar to acids increased with the storage days, however the titratable acidity decreased. Considering these results, the storage lifes were excellent by the order Sheridan, Muscat Bailey A and Tano Red.

This investigation assessed the berry quality after two months of low-temperature storage (3 ± 1℃) of 'Shine Muscat' grapes, which were treated with CPPU (N-[2-chloro-4-pyridyl]-N'-phenylurea) or TDZ (1-phenyl-3-[1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl] urea) in combination with gibbrellic acid (GA3). The berry shatter rate was the lowest (1%) in 4 cm + CPPU treatment, while it was the highest (2.4%) in 3 cm floral length treated with CPPU. On the other hand, the 4 cm + TDZ treatment resulted in a shatter rate of 2.0%, which was twice as high as that observed after 4 cm + CPPU treatment. The 4 cm + TDZ treatment resulted in a 5.5% berry decay rate, which was the highest among all treatments. Alternatives to using a sulfur dioxide (SD) pad to maintain the quality of 'Shine Muscat' grapes, namely, using ethylene scrubbers (ESs, 3 g × 2 sachet) and alcohol releasers (ARs, 2 g × 2 sachet) in a 2 kg carton package for export, were explored in this study. The berry shatter rate with ES treatment (1.0%) was found to be comparable to that with SD treatment (0.6%) during three months of cold storage. Regarding the berry decay rate, that of the untreated control surged to 36.0% in the three months of storage, followed by 19.9% and 15.5% in samples subjected to AR and ES treatments respectively. Compared with the untreated control, the samples subjected to SD treatment showed a decay rate of 2.2%, which was the most effective in reducing berry decay by 95%. These results demonstrated that SD pad treatment of 'Shine Muscat' grapes was the most effective method of maintaining berry quality, and ES treatment partially reduced the berry shatter and berry decay rates.

'Shine Muscat' (Vitis labruscana Bailey x Vitis vinifera L.) grapes recently have been greatly favored in Korea, and as of 2022, account for 38.6% of the total grape market in Korea. However, there is a lack of research on post-harvest quality control appropriate to the unique characteristics of 'Shine Muscat'. In order to continuously increase domestic demand and exports in the future, it is essential to establish proper postharvest techniques. Essential oils have remarkable potential as biologically active and environmentally friendly antiseptics for the fruit industry. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of essential oils and aroma constituent treatment on fruit quality attributes of 'Shine Muscat' grapes in order to extend fruit quality during a simulated export period. A cluster of 'Shine Muscat' grapes was placed in a newly developed paper box container, and treated with rosemary essential oil, thyme essential oil, and linalool, along with an untreated control. The results showed no significant effect on fruit quality indices, such as cluster weight loss, berry firmness, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, sugar acid ratio, and color change, but showed a positive effect on the alleviation of berry shatter compared to the untreated control. In addition, rosemary oil treatment reduced the proportion of unhealthy berries. Therefore, the results indicated that the newly developed packaging container along with certain essential oil treatment could be applied as a promising packaging material for table grape export.
This study was conducted to determine if chlorine dioxide ($ClO_{2}$) gas might minimize microbial contamination of fresh produce. After exposing grapes to 20 ppm or 40 ppm of chlorine dioxide gas in a closed container, grapes treated with 20 ppm $ClO_{2}$ were packaged in Ny/PE/L-LDPE pouches, stapes treated with 40 ppm $ClO_{2}$ were placed in an empty corrugated box, and untreated control grapes were placed in a box with a sachet containing $ClO_{2}$ gas adsorbed to silica gel (a silica gel pad). The free volume of the sachet material allowed the release of $ClO_{2}$ gas into the headspace of packages containing fresh grapes. Control fruit not exposed to $ClO_{2}$, was placed in a box and stored at either $25^{\circ}C$ or $0^{\circ}C$. Fruit in Ny/PE/L-LDPE film treated with 20 ppm $ClO_{2}$ lost almost no weight during storage at either $25^{\circ}C$ or $0^{\circ}C$. Such fruit had a lower soluble solid content than did other fruit samples. Titratable acidity tended to fall rapidly during storage at either $25^{\circ}C$ or $0^{\circ}C$. Anthocyanin content of grapes decreased over 21 days at $25^{\circ}C$ but increased over 10 weeks at $0^{\circ}C$. The total microbial count of grapes treated with $ClO_{2}$ gas and silica gel pads were lower than controls at $25^{\circ}C$. Fruit treated with 20 ppm $ClO_{2}$ and packaged in Ny/PE/L-LDPE pouches had lower microbial counts than other fruit samples when stored at $0^{\circ}C$. The silica gel pad did not significantly improve total microbial count (compared to untreated control samples) at $0^{\circ}C$. This result may be attributed to a higher rate of diffusion of $ClO_{2}$ gas at room temperature.
Storage life of grape cultivars including Kyoho(Inzuka), which were imported from Japan and are cultivated after adoption as farming application, were examined. The stu요 was accomplished with grapes packed by PE film under storage temperature $0^{\circ}C$ and humidity 90%RH loss of weight, Weight loss and occurrence of abnormal fruit increased in proportion to storage days. Abnormal fruits of Kyoho(izuka), North Black , and Seto giants increased rapidly after 60 days of storage, resulting in slight deterioration of commercial value. Similarly, this phenomenon of Campbell early , Takasumi , and Aki Queen occurred after 70 days of storage. External appearance decreased rapidly after 60 days of storage, resulting in 7.0 index of Takatsuma and Aki Queen , 3.0-3.6 of North Black and Seto Giants, and 5.0 of Campbell Early, kyoho (izuka0, and takasumi after 80 days of storage. Soluble solide content and titratable acidity showed a trend to be decreased with lapse of storage. Sugar/acid ratio shwoed much fluctuation between different grapes. Possible storage days, in view of more 70% merchandise berry ratio, were 90 days of Takatsuma and Aki Queen , 70 days of Campbell Early, 60 days of Takasumi , kyoho(Iizuka), and Seto giants, below 60 days of North Black.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the reducing effect of workload on developed electro-motion scissors. Methods: To achieve this, we measured the pressure distribution, Joint angle of fingers and JSI(Job Strain Index) for electro-motion scissors and hand-operated scissor in objective assessment and surveyed the uncomfortable degree in subjective assessment. Results: As a result, The peak of pressure in the electro-motion scissors was generally lower than the hand-operated scissors. JSI and overall joint angle of fingers for the electro-motion scissors were remarkably lower than the hand-operated scissors. Also, the subjective uncomfortable degree showed that the uncomfortable point of electro-motion scissors were generally lower than the hand operated scissors. Conclusion: The impact of reducing the work load as well as distributing the pressure around the hand by using electro-motion scissors during grapes pinching was confirmed.
Swollen commercially canned grapes and peaches were collected to investigate the microorganisms involved in their spoilage. 6 of 52 grape and 19 of 23 peach samples were found to be spoiled by microorganisms. Yeasts were the only spoilage microorganisms of canned grapes with Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the leading spoilage yeast. Yeasts and bacteria were found from spoiled canned peaches. S. cerevisiae and Torulopsis stellata were the most important spoilage yeasts of canned peaches. Lactic acid bacteria, belonging to genera of Lactobacillus and Leuconostoc, were the most frequently found spoilage bacteria. Only one spore-forming bacterium, Bacillus licheniformis, was involved in the spoilage of canned peaches.
