The purpose of this study was to compare the grandmothers' role performance toward their grandchildren in the elementary school between working and nonworking mother families. The subjects were 274 grandparent-grandchild pairs. The structured questionnaires, from both grandmothers and grandchildren were collected in 2001. Using statistical techniques such as factor analysis, t-test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis, the major findings were as fellows: 1) The level of the grandmothers' role performance is moderate in general. However, the grandmothers in working mother families perform surrogate mother roles more strongly than the grandmothers in nonworking mother families.2) While contact between grandmother and grandchild is associated with the grandmother's role performance in working mother families, the grandmother's age and the closeness between grandmother and mother are related to the level of the grandmother's role performance in nonworking mother families. In conclusion, the grandmothers' role performance in working mother families was found to be more important in the supporting system than in nonworking mother families.
This study examines the effects of health-promoting behaviors of grandmothers participating in their infant grandchildren's nurture and provides data for enhancing the quality of their lives. The sample included 218 consenting subjects who understood the purpose of the study. These subjects resided in three cities in Jeollanam-do, Korea, and were grandmothers entrusted by their adult children with a considerable amount of nurturing for their preschool-aged grandchildren under the age of six. First, the subjects scored an average of 3.05 for health-promoting behaviors and 2.42 for entrapment. Second, the entrapment measurement based on general characteristics showed a higher level of entrapment for those with better health, a lower education level, no religion, male grandchildren to nurture, and unsatisfactory compensation. Third, health-promoting behaviors and entrapment (r=-.304) were negatively correlated. Fourth, the analysis results for effects of health-promoting behaviors of grandmothers on entrapment based on general characteristics of grandmothers as a control variable reveal a significant effect of health-promoting behaviors on entrapment. In other words, the greater the employment of health-promoting behaviors, the less likely the entrapment was to be perceived. Fifth, the results for effects of subcriteria for health-promoting behaviors on entrapment reveal a decrease in entrapment when the subjects engaged in an appropriate level of physical activity with a relaxed state of mind. These results suggest that health-promoting behaviors of grandmothers participating in their infant grandchildren's nurture are likely to influence entrapment and thus that grandmothers should make efforts to actively engage in health-promoting behaviors to reduce any maladaptive effects on nurturing. Social support and related programs should be fostered to enable grandmothers to better practice health-promoting behaviors while nurturing their grandchildren.
This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of paternal and maternal grandmothers' social support, and to investigate the relationship between paternal and maternal grandmothers' social support and their school-aged grandchildren's psychological adaptation. The participants of this study were 215 students in the 5th and 6th grades and their mothers residing in Daegu. Collected data were analyzed using t-test, paired t-test, ANOV A, Scheffe's test, and hierarchical multiple regression. Findings of this study are as follows: 1. School-aged children perceived that their maternal grandmothers rendered more emotional and informational support than their paternal grandmothers. 2. Paternal grandmother's social support as perceived by the grandchild varied significantly with the frequency of face-to-face contact, the frequency of phone contact, and the friendship between the paternal grandmother and the mother. Maternal grandmother's social support as perceived by the grandchild, on the other hand, varied significantly by the level of grandmother's education, the frequency of face-to-face contact, and the frequency of phone contact. 3. Perceived paternal and maternal grandmothers' social support had indirect impacts on grandchildren's depression, which was mediated by their mothers' parenting.
Family dissolution and economic difficulties of the grandchild's parents are the most prevailing reason for an increase of grandparent-headed families in rural Korea. However, there is a lack of empirical research looking at the experiences of custodial grandmothers, social support, and their psychological well-being. In this regard, this study examined the effect of social support (formal & informal) on the psychological well-being of custodial grandmothers in rural Korea. For this purpose, quantitative and qualitative research methods were conducted. Quantitative data were gathered, using structured questionnaire, from 311 grandmothers who were raising their grandchildren in rural Korea as primary care-givers. Statistical methods used for data analysis were descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS WIN 19.0 programs. Qualitative data were collected by in-depth interviews to 10 custodial grandmothers in rural area. The results of this study are as follows. First, almost half of the parents of the grandchild didn't visit and didn't call anymore. Some relatives -aunt, uncle, etc.- support the grandparent-headed family economically and emotionally. 3/4 of the grandparent-headed families were supported by the government and community. This was not small numbers, but the amount of economic support was low. Second, grandmothers in the study showed quite a high level of depression while their happiness level was relatively low. There were differences in the factors influencing the level of happiness/depression of these rural grandmothers. Overall, the study's results showed the importance of formal & informal support for psychological well-being of the custodial grandmothers in rural Korea. Policy and theoretical implications are discussed.
Objectives : This study investigated the general characteristics, child rearing characteristics, and the level of self-differentiation of 120 custodial grandmothers. Methods : Data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire from 120 custodial grandmothers who registered Kinship Network in Busan City. Results : For the self-differentiation measure, the mean score of the sample was $2.52{\pm}0.51$. However, the level of the fusion with emotion $1.89{\pm}0.80$ was extremely low partly due to the influence of collectivist culture of Korean society. The levels of emotional reactivity and fusion with emotion were significantly low which were dependent on depression (F=4.387, p=0.015). Conclusions : The findings of this study show the need to improve the level of self-differentiation by increasing the score of emotional reactivity and fusion with the emotion among the kinship network grandmothers. Therefore, supportive programs for kinship network grandmothers need to develop self-differentiation.
This study was conducted in order to understand grandmothers' satisfaction of caring for working mothers' children and the influence of related variables with regard to living arrangements. The data were collected from 245 grandmothers who have been caring for their grandchildren for more than 6 months. The data were analyzed by mean, t-test, $x^2$-test, and hierarchical multiple regression. The results were as follows: First, Degree of satisfaction was lower in grandmothers who were living with their children than those who were not. Second, the variables affecting the grandmothers living with their children were economic status, extent of care giving activities, and social support, wherein social support proved to be the most influential. In the case of those not living with their children, the significant variables were motive and social support, motive being more influential. This result indicates that affecting variables differ by the grandmothers' living arrangements, and thus the strategy to enhance their care giving satisfaction should differ as well, based on the findings.
Purpose: This study was designed to construct and test a structural equation model for life satisfaction in grandmothers who were parenting grandchildren Methods: Grandmothers assuming part-time parenting responsibilities for grandchildren were recruited in four cities in South Korea. They were asked to complete a questionnaire through face to face interviews or self reports, and 248 data units were analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling. Results: Model fit indices for the final model revealed a fit at an excellent level, and all of the 12 paths were statistically significant explaining 51% of the variance. Predictors of life satisfaction in the final model were parenting efficacy, perceived health status, parenting stress, amount of parenting, and demographic factors. The new findings of this study were as follows: First, the satisfaction with life of part-time parenting grandmothers was less than that of non-parenting grandmothers. Second, parenting stress and parenting efficacy revealed determinants to life satisfaction. Third, motivation of parenting and amount of parenting affect both parenting stress and parenting efficacy. Conclusion: The value of parenting and the grandmother-adult children relationship quality should also be considered in developing a grandmothers' educational program, because these are the factors which strengthen parenting efficacy and alleviate parenting stress.

This study examined the effects of maternal grandmothers' positive parenting behavior, mothers' emotion regulation, and positive parenting behavior on children's emotion regulation. A total of 348 mothers of fourth and fifth graders responded to questionnaires, which included items related to their mothers' positive parenting behavior, their own emotion regulation and positive parenting behavior, and their children's emotion regulation. The data were analyzed by means of correlations and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). First, maternal grandmothers' positive parenting behavior significantly affected mothers' emotion regulation, but mothers' emotion regulation did not directly affect their children's emotion regulation. Second, maternal grandmothers' positive parenting behavior had an effect on mothers' positive parenting behavior, which led to a high level of their children's emotion regulation. Lastly, maternal grandmothers' positive parenting behavior indirectly influenced children's emotion regulation through mothers' emotion regulation and positive parenting behavior. This study emphasizes the intergenerational transmission of positive parenting, as well as a crucial influence of mothers' positive parenting behavior on children's emotion regulation.
This study was focused on investigating the factors of the psychological adaptation of grandmothers raising their grandchildren. The Double ABCX family stress model provided the theoretical basis for this study, and the major factors examined in the study included a pile-up of stressors, family resources and social support, appraisal of situation(redefinition of nurturing), and adaptation(depressive mood and happiness). Data were collected by personal interview with 213 grandmothers raising their grandchildren utilizing the questionnaire survey method. Structural equation modeling analyses were performed and the results showed that a pile-up of stressors, the family resources(i.e., contact and emotional solidarity with grandchildren's parents), and the redefinition of nurturing had significant influences on the psychological adaptation of grandmothers raising their grandchildren. It was also found that social support had indirect influence on grandmothers' psychological adaptation. The redefinition of nurturing had the greatest effect on the participants' psychological adaptation, followed by a pile-up stressor, and then the family resources.
Purpose: The study was to compare the factors of life satisfaction between grandmothers parenting and not parenting their grandchildren. Methods: A descriptive design with a convenience sampling was used for this study. From communities in S and U city, 85 parenting grandmothers (PG) and 103 non-parenting grandmothers (NPG) were recruited. The PG were those grandmothers who cared for preschooler grandchildren for their daughter or daughter-in-law who was employed. Results: The demographics of the two groups were similar, however the value of grandparenting was significantly higher in the PG than the NPG (t=4.56, p<.001). In the PG, strong and significant correlations were found among the value of grandparenting, health status, quality of relations with adult children, and life satisfaction. However, demographics were more related to health status and life satisfaction in the NPG. The value of grandparenting, health status, and quality of grandmother-adult children relations were found to be significant factors of life satisfaction (F=20.75, p <.001) explaining 42% of the variances. In the NPG, only health status was a significant factor (F=50.66, p <.001) explaining 33% of the variances. Conclusion: This study shows that grandmothers' perceptions of grandparenting and family relationships need to be incorporated into the lifestyle in order to support parenting grandmothers' life satisfaction while grandmothers' health is the common concern of elderly women's life satisfaction.
