  • The empirical model for predicting the prior austenite grain size in low-alloy steel weld HAZ was developed through examining the effect of alloying element. The test alloys were made by vacuum induction melting. Grain growth behaviors were observed and analyzed by isothermal grain growth test and subsequent metallography. As a result, it was found that the grain growth might be controlled by grain boundary diffusion and the empirical model for grain growth was presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate maximum and minimum grain size which eroded by wind according to soil and wind conditions, such as top soil water content, roughness, land slope, wind velocity and proportion of grain size under 0.84mm. For performing this study, portable wind erosion tunnel was designed and utilized during field test, which facilitated measuring actual wind erosions under artificially controlled wind conditions. In the result, maximum, minimum grain size had strong negative correlation with roughness while weak positive correlation with wind velocity. Also, Slope which means the effect of gravity also influence grain size erodible by winds. Based on these results, regression equations were suggested for predicting maximum and minimum grain sizes by using multiple linear regression analysis from SPSS 20.0. The equation for maximum grain size erodible by winds showed a good agreement with the observed data with $R^2$=0.896. Other equation for minimum grain size had $R^2$=0.777.

  • In order to investigate the effect of particle size and distribution of silica sand on the characteristics of investment, W/P ratio, setting time, temperature change during setting, setting expansion, thermal expansion and compressive strength of the investments were measured. In this experiment, magnesia clinker and mono ammonium phosphate were used as binder, and particle size and distribution of silica sand were classified for convinence into 10 categories. The main results obtained from this investigation were summerized as follows. 1. W/P ratio decreased with increase of particle size and evenness in distribution of sand grain. 2. Setting time decreased with increase of evenness in distribution of sand grain, and temperature during setting increased with evenness in distribution of sand grain. 3. Setting expansion decreased with increase of particle size, while it increased with evenness in distribution of sand grain. 4. Thermal expansion decreased with increase of particle size. 5. Compressive strength increased with increase of particle size and evenness in distribution of sand grain. From above results, G.F.N. 250 sand which contains 30% of 50-100 mesh could be recommended for investment casting.

  • The ductile-brittle transition behavior of two austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N-C alloys with different grain sizes was investigated in this study. The alloys exhibited a ductile-brittle transition behavior because of an unusual brittle fracture at low temperatures unlike conventional austenitic alloys. The alloy specimens with a smaller grain size had a higher yield and tensile strengths than those with a larger grain size due to grain refinement strengthening. However, a decrease in the grain size deteriorated the low-temperature toughness by increasing the ductile-brittle transition temperature because nitrogen or carbon could enhance the effectiveness of the grain boundaries to overcome the thermal energy. It could be explained by the temperature dependence of the yield stress based on low-temperature tensile tests. In order to improve both the strength and toughness of austenitic Fe-Cr-Mn-N-C alloys with different chemical compositions and grain sizes, more systematic studies are required to understand the effect of the grain size on the mechanical properties in relation to the temperature sensitivity of yield and fracture stresses.

  • In this investigation, the effect of microstructural factors on the impact energy was studied, using dual phase steels with soft phase of ferrite encapsulated by hard phase of martensite. It was found that the effect of the ferrite grain size on the impact energy decreases as the strength ratio increases, these results are due to the micro-brittlefracture facet by the difficulty of cleavage crack formation in the ferrite grain.

  • The effects of heat treatment on fatigue crack growth rates (FCGRs) of Inconel 690 have been investigated in terms of carbide morphology and grain size. Cycling tests in air at room temperature have shown that FCGR in low stress intensity factor range (ΔK) region can be effectively reduced by increasing the grain boundary carbide precipitate size and grain size. Decrease in FCGR is attributed to the crack tip blunting at the precipitates of grain boundary chromium carbides.

  • The relationship between plastic deformation and crystal grain change in warm forging processes of SM100 carbon steel is studied. If the carbon steel is deformed in warm forging temperature (about recrystallization range), the crystal grain and cementite of the internal part are changed, so material properties are changed. Some experimental values, such as the elliptic degree of cementite, the grain size of cementitie and ferrite grain size, are investigated. When the plastic deformation proceeds, the elliptic degree of cementite becomes large, the grain size of cementite particle is small, and the size of ferrite grain appears fine by recrystallization. The elliptic degree of cementite has a considerable effect on formability. The distribution of effective strain in the forging is calculated by the rigid visco-plastic FEM analysis. The effective strain distribution obtained from the FEM simulation is compared with the experimental result. At effective strain 0.3 dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization begin, over 2.5 the organization of material has better quality that is suitable for the following cold forming.

  • The austenite grain growth model in low alloyed steel HAZ without precipitates was proposed by analyzing isothermal grain growth behavior. Steels used in this study were designed to investigate the effect of alloying elements. Meanwhile, a systematic procedure was proposed to prevent inappropriate neglect of initial grain size (D0) and misreading both time exponent and activation energy for isothermal grain growth. It was found that the time exponent was almost constant, irrespectively of temperature and alloying elements, and activation energy increased with the addition of alloying elements. From quantification of the effect of alloying elements on the activation energy, an isothermal grain growth model was presented. Finally, combining with the additivity rule, the austenite grain size in the CGHAZ was predicted.

  • Grain size of the $\alpha$ phase is computed during isothermal forging of the TC6 aerofoil blade, by combining FE with the Yada's model of grain size. The present results illustrate the grain size and distribution of the $\alpha$ phase during isothermal forging of the TC6 aerofoil blade' in detail. The computed results show that height reduction, deformation temperature, hammer velocity and friction have significant effect on distribution of the equivalent strain, and that height reduction, deformation temperature and hammer velocity have more significant effect on grain size of the $\alpha$ phase than friction between billet and die.

  • Precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC) inorganic fillers for plastic offera higher replacement ratio with improved mechanical properties than any other inorganic fillers. Due to its secure economic feasibility, its fields of application areexpanding. For optimized PCC grain size and polymer replacement ratio, it is good to maintain at least $0.035{\mu}m$ grains and keep double the grain size of distance between particles, depending on the molecular weight and volume replacement rate of the polymer. PCC has unique characteristics, ie, with smaller grain size, dispersibility decreases, and if grain size is not homogenous, polymer cracking occurs. The maximum replacement ratio of PCC is approximately 30%, but in the range of 10 - 15% it produces the highest mechanical strength. When mixed with a biodegradable plastic like starch, it also improves initial environmental degradability.
