  • To find food, homes, and mates, some animals have adapted special sensing capabilities. Rather than using a passive method, they discharge a signal and then extract the necessary information from the response. More importantly, they use the slope of the detected signal to find the destination of an object. In this paper, similar strategy is mathematically formulated. A perturbation and correlation-based gradient estimation method is developed and used as a sensing strategy. This method allows us to adaptively sense an object in a given environment effectively. The proposed strategy is based on the use of gradient values; rather than instantaneous measurements. Considering the gradient value, the sampling frequency is planned adaptively, i.e., sparse sampling is performed in slowly varying regions, while dense sampling is conducted in rapidly changing regions. Using a temperature sensor, the proposed strategy is verified and its effectiveness is demonstrated.

  • A derivation method for a quantized gradient for machine learning on an embedded system is proposed, in this paper. The proposed differentiation method induces the quantized gradient vector to an objective function and provides that the validation of the directional derivation. Moreover, mathematical analysis shows that the sequence yielded by the learning equation based on the proposed quantization converges to the optimal point of the quantized objective function when the quantized parameter is sufficiently large. The simulation result shows that the optimization solver based on the proposed quantized method represents sufficient performance in comparison to the conventional method based on the floating-point system.

  • In this study, we introduce a new image gradient computation based on understanding of image generation. Most images consist of groups of pixels with similar color information because the images are generally obtained by taking a picture of the real world. The general gradient operator for an image compares only the neighboring pixels and cannot obtain information about a wide area, and there is a risk of falling into a local minimum problem. Therefore, it is necessary to attempt to introduce the gradient operator of the interval concept. We present a bow-tie gradient by color values of pixels on bow-tie region of a given pixel. To confirm the superiority of our study, we applied our bow-tie gradient to image segmentation algorithms for various images.

  • The connectivity weighted Hough transform is a useful method for detecting well-connected short lines without generating false lines yet requires extensive computation. This letter describes a method that reduces the computation of the connectivity weighted Hough transform by removing unnecessary weight calculations using the gradient angles of feature points. In simulations with synthetic images and experiments with liquid crystal display panel images, the proposed method showed significantly improved speed without compromising detectability.

  • A variant of the global conjugate gradient method for solving general linear systems with multiple right-hand sides is proposed. This method is called as the global conjugate gradient linear least squares (Gl-CGLS) method since it is based on the conjugate gradient least squares method(CGLS). We present how this method can be implemented for the image deblurring problems with Neumann boundary conditions. Numerical experiments are tested on some blurred images for the purpose of comparing the computational efficiencies of Gl-CGLS with CGLS and Gl-LSQR. The results show that Gl-CGLS method is numerically more efficient than others for the ill-posed problems.

  • Liquid-Based Uterine Cervicovaginal Cytology is known to be a sensitive and effective screening method for cervical neoplasm $MonoPrep^{TM},\;ThinPrep^{TM},\;and\;SurePath^{TM}$ methods have been recently used as Liquid-Based Uterine Cervicovaginal Cytology techniques, and the $SurePath^{TM}$ method has been used in Sung-Yoon Reference Laboratory since 2003. The goal of Liquid-Based Uterine Cervicovaginal Cytology is to separate cervical epithelial cells from non-target cells, red blood cells and neutrophils. This report describes a study which evaluated cellularity, stainablilty, and cellular changes of epithelial cels in samples processed using a manual technique as compared to samples processed using $SurePath^{TM}$ automated method. The samples processed by means of a manual technique contained a cellularity of epithelial cells similar to that of the samples processed using the $SurePath^{TM}$ automated method. In addition, we compared variable density gradient reagents, including dextran, dextrose, and sucrose, to $SurePath^{TM}$ gradient media in order to evaluate cell fractionation and cellularity of epithelial cells. 10% dextran of gradient media shows good fractionation. The samples processed with 10% dextran demonstrated sufficient cellularity of epithelial cells and shows the fewest cellular changes. In conclusion, using a manual technique on these samples is easier to read than those results obtained using the $SurePath^{TM}$ automated method.

  • The optical method Digital Speckle Correlation Measurement (DSCM) has been extensively applied due its capability to measure the entire displacement field over a body surface. A formula of displacement measurement errors by the gradient-based DSCM method was derived. The errors were found to explicitly relate to the image grayscale errors consisting of sub-pixel interpolation algorithm errors, image noise, and subset deformation mismatch at each point of the subset. A power-law dependence of the standard deviation of displacement measurement errors on the subset size was established when the subset deformation was rigid body translation and random image noise was dominant and it was confirmed by both the numerical and experimental results. In a gradient-based algorithm the basic assumption is rigid body translation of the interrogated subsets, however, this is in contradiction to the real circumstances where strains exist. Numerical and experimental results also indicated that, subset shape function mismatch was dominant when the order of the assumed subset shape function was lower than that of the actual subset deformation field and the power-law dependence clearly broke down. The power-law relationship further leads to a simple criterion for choosing a suitable subset size, image quality, sub-pixel algorithm, and subset shape function for DSCM.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a numerical algorithm for the problem of coefficient identification of the scalar wave equation based on a local observation on the boundary: Determine the unknown coefficient function with the knowledge of simultaneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary values on a part of boundary. To find the unknown coefficient function, the unknown Neumann boundary value is also identified. We recast our inverse problem to variational problem. The gradient method is applied to find the minimizing functions. We confirm the effectiveness of our algorithm by numerical experiments.

  • In the developing country, the transportation situation is changed very quickly and the transportation environment is not stable. So the transportation planning should be frequently made in considering the limited cost and time. And the traditional large-scale survey(household survey, roadside interview, etc.) has many Problem like the difficulty for doing it and getting mood results. Therefore the study about the method of evaluation on the traffic count based O/D matrix is Processing actively recently. Though the many study for the network in the realistic size are enacted, the study for comparing with the advantage and disadvantage of each method are few. Therefore this study mainly deals with the static method among the existing models of evaluation on the traffic count based O/D matrix(in terms of the transportation plan). Bi-level(GU) and gradient method are selected as main alternative model and analyzed their capability and validity. For testing the reliability of the models, Bi-level(GLS) and gradient method are adapted to toy network. Then we analyze the result of testing, and study the way for large network.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel speech enhancement method to improve the performance of the conventional global soft decision which is based on the spectral gradient method applied to the ratio of a priori speech absence and presence probability value (q). Conventional global soft decision scheme used a fixed value of q in accordance with the hypothesis assumed, but the proposed algorithm is a technique for improving the speech absence probability which is applied adaptively variable value of q according to the speech presence or absence in the previous two frames and the conditions of the spectral gradient value. Experimental results show that the proposed improved global soft decision method based on the spectral gradient method yields better results compared to the conventional global soft decision technique based on the performance criteria of the ITU-T P. 862 PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality).
