  • Five Korean native goats were employed to test the effectiveness of the two modified techniques (Method I and II) of Pawlow's pouch method, Both methods turned out to be successful and simpler than the original pawlow's pouch method. In both methods, the miniature rumens were formed on the junction of two veins; versa ruminalis sinistra and vena ruminalis dextra. Both method I and II have the advantage of shortening the operation time, but caution is necessary to prevent the fistula formation between the rumen and miniature rumen in Method I.

  • To develop more reliable diagnostic measures for traumatic pericarditis in ruminant, fluctuations of serum total LDH activities and LDH isoenzymes fractions were investigated in artificially induced pericarditis of Korean native goats. Experimental group showed the tendency of increase serum LDH total activities. Effect of LDH isoenzymes on serum total LDH activities were high with decreasing order of LDH$_1$> LDH$_3$ > LDH$\sub$5/ > LDH$_2$ > LDH$_4$ and LDH$_1$ was the hightest among them. From these findings, increase of serum total LDH activities and LDH$_1$ fraction was thought to be important in traumatic pericarditis.

  • This study was carried out to investigate isolation of Pasteurella multocida from pneumonic lungs of slaughtered animals in Kyungsan abattoir to examine the antimicrobial susceptibility and biochemical properties. The results were summarized as follows ; P multocida was isolated from 50(29.2% ) of the 171 pneumonic lungs collected individually from cattle(3/40), goats(0131) and pigs(47/100), All of the isolated P multocida showed biocemical and cultural properties similiar to reference strains. All isolates were very susceptible to AK, AM, ENR, CF, GM,07, whereas resistant to SDM.

  • The studies on the liver fluke of Korea have been reviewed. The fluke is Fasciola hepatica. Its intermediate host is Lymnaea biridis, whose principal habitats are rice paddies. The first fascioliasis of Korean native(beef) cattle was reported in 1915. Bovine fascioliasis is present throughout the conuntry, including north Korea, with the average prevalence of 30%. The prevalence of the disease is about the same in dairy cattle, which have been imported from other countries since 1960s. The disease was also found in Korea in other species of animals such as sheep, goats, deer of zoo and farms, and guinea pigs of a laboratory. Human fascioliasis was reported ; 35 cases by fecal examination and 11 by both parasitology and pathology. Of the latter 11 cases, 5 were ectopic parasitism. Economic loss due to the reduced carcass weight and milk production, and liver condemnation was great. Almost all flukicides developed in other countries are commercially available in Korea.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the branches and distribution of Nervus ophthalmicus of the Korean native goat. The observation was made by dissection of embalmed cadavers of ten Korean native goats. The results were as follows; 1. N. ophthalmicus arised from the trigeminal nerve in a common trunk with the maxillary nerve. 2. At the exit of the foramen orbitorotundum the N. ophthalmicus gave off Ramus zygomaticotemporalis, N. frontalis, Ramus sinuum frontalium and N. nasociliaris. 3. Ramus zygomaticotemporalis, after giving off N. lacrimalis, left the orbital cavity and gave off Rami cornuales which were distributed the caudolateral part of the base of the horn. 4. After giving off N. ciliaris longus and Ramus communicans cum ganglio ciliari, N. nasociliaris divided into N. ethmoidalis and N. infratrochlearis which gave off Rami cornuales.

  • The mycoflora on the hair in 25 samples of each of goats and sheep collected from Libya was analyzed using two isolation methods at $25^{\circ}C$. Seventy species and 3 varieties belonging to 31 genera were collected from the two substrates. The hairs of sheep were polluted with fungi than goat, contained high total counts and number of genera and species. Two species of true dermatophytes were isolated namely Trichophyton rubrum and T. terrestre. Several keratiophilic species were isolated of which Chrysosporium indicum, C. keratinophilum and C. tropicum were the most prevalent. The commonest saprophytes in order of frequency were members of the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Emericella, Alternaria and Cochliobolus.

  • This study was performed to investigate the normal ocular fundus in 30 Korean native goats. The shape of two peaks of a mountain was shown in the tapetal fundus which was mostly greenish-blue color. The nontapetal fundus which was differentiated from the tapetal fundus, was generally a uniform shade with dark blue. The optic disc was nearly round and varied in color : orange, gray, tan and various combinations. It was mostly located at the junctional area of the nontapetal and the tapetal fundus. In the retinal vasculature, three or four major arterioles and two or three major venules emerged from the optic disc and the arterioles could be distinguished from the venules. The superior arteriole and venule in the tapetal fundus did not twist each other.

  • To determine association of grassland with parasitic diseases of livestock in Bangladesh, the 'Tracer' animals (two cow calves and two goats) were released for a month in a grassland used for communal grazing of livestock near school premise in Kanthal, Trishal, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. After slaughtering of the tracer animals, their gastrointestinal tract examination revealed six species of nematode and one cestode. The nematode species were Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus axei, Mecistocirrus digitatus, Oesophagostomum spp., Trichuris spp. and Bunostomum sp. The cestode was one of the genus Moniezia. With this preliminary study, grasslands are thought to be one of the main sources of gastrointestinal parasitic diseases of livestock in Bangladesh.

  • Toxoplasma gondii consists of three genotypes, namely genotype I, II and III. Based on its virulence, T. gondii can be divided into virulent and avirulent strains. This study intends to evaluate an alternative method for predicting T. gondii virulence using hierarchical cluster analysis based on complete coding sequences (CDS) of sag1, gra7 and rop18 genes. Dendrogram was constructed using UPGMA with a Kimura 80 nucleotide distance measurement. The results showed that the prediction errors of T. gondii virulence using sag1, gra7 and rop18 were 7.41%, 6.89% and 9.1%, respectively. Analysis based on CDS of gra7 and rop18 was able to differentiate avirulent strains into genotypes II and III, whereas sag1 failed to differentiate.

  • Fascioliasis is a parasitic infection caused by liver flukes. Although several cases have been reported in Korea, phylogenetic analysis of isolates is lacking. In this study, a 66-year-old woman with right upper quadrant (RUQ) abdominal pain was diagnosed as fascioliasis involving abdominal muscle by imaging study. She received praziquantel treatment, but symptoms were not improved. Lateral movement of the abscess lesion was followed. Trematode parasite was surgically removed from the patient's rectus abdominis muscle. The fluke was identified as Fasciola hepatica based on sequence analysis of 18S rDNA. To determine the phylogenetic position of this Fasciola strain (named Korean Fasciola 1; KF1), the cox1 gene (273 bp) was analyzed and compared with the genes of 17 F. hepatica strains isolated from cows, sheep, goats, and humans from various countries. Phylogenetic analysis showed that KF1 was closely related with the isolates from China goat.
