The purpose of this study is to develop ceramic glazes for the pottery production by utilizing wasted white porcelain, celadon porcelain and bone china thrown away from the areas of Icheon and Yeoju. Most of Korean pottery manufacturers are located in the both areas. According to the XRF analysis, the wasted white porcelain contains over 67 % of silica. It is enough to make a transparent glaze without adding silica. The wasted celadon porcelain contains much $Fe_2O_3$, which is suitable for producing a celadon glaze. The wasted bone china contains 22 % of $P_2O_5$, which is suitable for making a milky white bone china glaze. As a result, it is expected that production of pottery glaze using the wasted porcelains will reduce pollution problems comes from the landfill, and obtain economic effects in terms of resources recycling. It is also expected to be utilized as alternative materials of imported ones.

Ceramic pigments were developed by using 4 kinds of Brass scraps. Each Brass scraps were mixed with same weight-ratio of Husk ash, and fine-ground by Rotate ring mill(RRG-120, Armstech industrial. co. Ltd, Korea) after firing at $900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. As a result, analysis of particle size of synthetic pigments by particle size analyser, they are $3{\mu}m$ as average. The resulting pigments were characterized by using XRD, FT-IR, SEM Structure of the crystals are Zn2SiO4,, and ZnO, Cu2O, CuO, and cristobalite are existed and particles' shape are plate or needle. As a result of analysis of chemical composition by XRF, synthetic pigments have high SiO2 and CuO content and have SnO2, ZnO and NiO, too. 1wt%, 3wt% and 5wt% pigments were added in each lime glaze, lime-barium glaze and lime-magnesia glaze, and fired at oxidation and reducing atmosphere to figure hue in glazes out. As a result of analysis of color, chroma and brightness by UV, colors of glazes fired at oxidation atmosphere turned into green from sky blue, and colors of glazes fired at reducing atmosphere turned into pink and red.

In the ceramic industry, a drastic decrease in crystalline formation was found even among the glazes well known for their high crystalline productivity when the ceramic glaze was stored in wet conditions over a period. This study aimed to investigate the reason for decreasing willemite crystals during storage. As the starting materials ZnO, calcined ZnO and frit 3110 are selected; the composition for zinc crystalline glazes was set through a three-component system with the materials. The firing condition was used from previous studies. The study was observed how wet conditions affected the crystallization of zinc crystalline glazes from a day to 24 weeks. The results were obtained by particle size analysis, XRD, Raman spectroscopy and SEM analysis. The results indicated that ZnO is advantageous in terms of willemite crystalline development and growth; however, Zn(OH)2 cluster, formed by the reaction with water during the storage, caused the decrease in ZnO level in the glaze. The reduction of ZnO in the glaze eventually interfered the willemite development and growth.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the properties of traditional Korean ash glazes by using locally available sources; 10 kinds of grain stems,2 kinds of husks (pod, chaff), and 4 kinds of vegetables (spinach, radish leaf and stem, pumpkin leaf and stem, pepper stem), and to develop their practical uses as ash glazes. The test results of these ash glazes indicate that these ashes can be classified into four categories. The first group, which includes perilla stem ash, sesame stem ash, black bean stem ash and red-bean stem ash, shows strong milky white due to relatively lower content of $SiO_2$, and relatively higher content of CaO and P$_2$O$\_$5/ content (10% higher than others), and their glazes were found to be suitable for opaque glaze as they show relatively stable bright greenish color. The second group includes pepper stem ash, spinach ash, pod ash, radish leaf and stem ash, and bean stem ash, and this group was found to contain even quantity of every component. And their glaze show somewhat greenish color because of especially high content of MgO and more than 2% of Fe$_2$$O_3$. They were found to be suitable for basic glaze of IRABO glaze. The third group, which includes com stalk ash, white bean ash, pumpkin leaf and stem ash, has more $SiO_2$ and Al$_2$$O_3$ than other ashes, and it also contains 3~5% of Fe$_2$$O_3$. As a result of those components, this third group shows the greatest change of color and chroma, and was found to be suitable glazes as basic glaze of Temmoku and black glazes. The fourth group (reed ash, rice straw ash, indian millet stalk ash and chaff ash) has as much as 45~82% of $SiO_2$ and relatively lower content of Fe$_2$$O_3$ and P$_2$$O_3$. This group shows blue or greenish white color, and was found to be suitable as the basic glaze of white glaze.
Chulwha pieces collected from Hakbong-ri site in Keryong mountain were studied whether there is reactions or not in each layer to investigate firing condition of glaze, body, Chulwha, engobe of Buncheong ware in the early Chosun Dynasty, 15th~16th Century. As a result of XRD analysis of a Chulwha piece, a main crystal phase was $\alpha$-Quartz and a second was Mullite. It was assumed the firing temperature would be around $1200^{\circ}C$ because a little amount of Mullite was formed in the body and there was no phase transition $\alpha$-Quartz to cristobalite. As a result of ICRM analysis, Chulwha and glaze didn't react and the melted glazes were sunk into the Chunwha particles. The thin layer of glaze was found on the Chulwha layer. As a result, the color of Chulwha layer always came to vivid black. Moreover, Chulwha painting didn't spread over the Buncheong ware, because Chulwha and engobe didn't react. The boundary interface of engobe and body was not clear because they had similar compositions. This shows engobe was composed of more $Al_2O_3$ than body.
The composition of Chinese ceramic shards has been the subject of analysis in Europe, beginning in the 18th century, and in China from the 1950s. Scientific studies of traditional Korean shards commenced in the United States and Germany in the 1980s, and studies within Korea began in the 1990s. From analysis of a large systematically collected dataset, the composition of porcelain produced during the Kory. dynasty, including 21 celadon and 10 whiteware groups, was characterized and compared with that of Chinese ceramics. The average composition of the body and glaze of several shards (usually three to five) from each group was determined, enabling comparisons between groups. The results show that the majority of groups were derived from mica-quartz porcelain stone, which was commonly used in Yuezhou, Jingdezhen, and other southern Chinese kilns. The composition of glazes includes clay and flux components; the latter were typically wood ash and limestone, initially as burnt but later as crushed forms. The earliest of the Kangjin glazes contained substantially less titanium oxide than did the Yuezhou glazes, which were typically formulated from body material and wood ash. The present study provides a comparative framework for the growing number of analytical investigations associated with excavations occurring in Korea.
Preparation of pink color stains was studied using manganese sulfate and aluminum salts. As the results obtained in this study, the composition range of the stains showing favorable pink celor was as follows: MnO.0.5-0.8P2O5.1.70-3.00 Al2O3 Furthermore, as the results of applied tests for glazes and the color measured by Color Eye, the usefulness of the stains was approved.
Generally, the color gold has had a biased conception due to its traditional use. Thus, this bias has resulted in a lack of usage of golden glaze on ceramics and also a lack of extensive studies of such glazes. In this paper, optimum conditions and mechanism of formation of gold color crystallization glaze containing $Fe_2O_3$(hematite), which is developed for gold colors of ceramic glazes, were studied. Experimental result showed that there are pyroxene based on diopside and $TiO_2$ phase in the base of a crystallization glaze with a value of $TiO_2$ of 6 wt% confirmed by XRD and Raman Spectroscopy. When $Fe_2O_3$ was used as a colorant for the gold color, the $TiO_2$ peak became extinct and the intensity of the diopside peak was sharper. Feldspar of 60 wt%, talc of 20 wt% and limestone of 20 wt% were used as the starting materials and these were tested using a three component system. The best result of test was selected and extended to its vicinity as an experiment to determine $TiO_2$ and $Fe_2O_3$ contents. The glaze with $TiO_2$ of 6 wt% and $Fe_2O_3$ of 12 wt% addition showed stable pyroxene based diopside crystals and the development of gold color. This gold color was obtained with CIE-$L^*a^*b^*$ values of 51.27, 4.46, 16.15 (a grayish yellow brown color), which was gained using the following firing conditions: temperature increasing speed $5^{\circ}C$/min, holding for 1 h at $1280^{\circ}C$, annealing speed $3^{\circ}C$/min till $1100{\circ}C$, holding for 2 h at $1100{\circ}C$, and finally natural annealing.
At the beginning of the Chos$\breve{o}$n dynasty, punch'$\breve{o}$ng began as a simplified form of inlaid celadon, and in the two following centuries it developed into a popular folk craft in various styles and expressive decorations; overtime, it was increasingly made to resemble whiteware, and its production stopped after the Japanese invasion of Korea. In the present study, the body and glaze compositions of punch'$\breve{o}$ng were examined and compared with those of celadon and whiteware, whose compositions have previously been compared with those of Chinese ceramics. Here, the analyzed shards were organized into 28 groups based on their production sites and archaeological characteristics. For each group, the body and glaze compositions of several shards(usually three to five) were obtained, averaged, and compared with those of the other groups. These comparisons showed that the majority of the punch'$\breve{o}$ng bodies were formed, like those of celadon and whiteware, with mica-quartz porcelain stone, which was commonly used in Yuezhou, Jingdezhen, and other southern Chinese kilns. The glazes consisted of clay materials and flux components made from various proportions of wood ash, burnt limestone (glaze ash) and crushed limestone. Overall, the punch'$\breve{o}$ng glazes resembled the Kory$\breve{o}$ celadon and Kory$\breve{o}$ whiteware glazes more closely than the Chos$\breve{o}$n white wareglazes. However, the $TiO_2$ levels found in the tested punch'$\breve{o}$ng were low, similar to those of Chos$\breve{o}$n whiteware; this indicated that glaze stone was used as the clay component of the punch'$\breve{o}$ng glazes, as was the case for Chos$\breve{o}$n whiteware. This study of the material characteristics of punch'$\breve{o}$ng may be used as a comparative framework for analyzing ceramic shards discovered at current and future excavations within Korea.
The cobalt blue spinel stains (main composition; CoO:$Al_2O_3$=1 : 1) in CoO-NiO-$Al_2O_$3 and $CoO-Al_2O_3-Cr_2O_3$ system were prepared by the calcination of each component oxides to be adequate for the factory. The color development, the change of the lattice constnat of the spinel and its application to colored glazes were studied. The results were summarized as follows. 1) In CoO-Al_2O_3$ spinel, the excess addition of each component hardly made any variation in lattice constantand alumina-rich spinel specimens caused the brilliant blue color fade. 2) An increase of $Ni^{2+}$ in $CoO-NiO-Al_2O_3$ system, made the lattice constnat of the $CoO-Al_2O_3$ spinel smaller, and an increase of $Cr^{3+}$ in $CoO-Al_2O_3-Cr_2O_3$, larger. 3) Glazed stains under lead glaze were colored nearly same dark blue color fade.
