Various types of optical materials and devices used in special environments must satisfy durability and optical properties. In order to improve the durability of zinc sulfide multispectral (MS ZnS) substrates with transmission wavelengths from visible to infrared, Ge-Sb-Se-based chalcogenide glass was used as a sealing material to bond the MS ZnS substrates. Wetting tests of the Ge-Sb-Se-based chalcogenide glass were conducted to analyze flowability as a function of temperature, by considering the glass transition temperature (Tg) and softening temperature (Ts). In the wetting test, the viscous flow of the chalcogenide glass sample was analyzed according to the temperature. After placing the chalcogenide glass disk between MS ZnS substrates (20 × 30 mm), the sealing test was performed at a temperature of 485 ℃ for 60 min. Notably, it was found that the Ge-Sb-Se-based chalcogenide glass sealed the MS ZnS substrates well. After the MS ZnS substrates were sealed with chalcogenide glass, they showed a transmission of 55 % over 3~12 ㎛. The tensile strength of the sealed MS ZnS substrates with Ge-Sb-Se-based chalcogenide glass was analyzed by applying a maximum load of about 240 N, confirming its suitability as a sealing material in the far infrared range.
Infrared radiation (IR) refers to the region of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum where wavelengths range from about 700 nm to 1 mm. Any object with a temperature above absolute zero (0 K) radiates in the infrared region, and a material that transmits radiant energy in the range of 0.74 to 1.4 um is referred to as a near-infrared optical material. Germanate-based glass is attracting attention as a glass material for infrared optical lenses because of its simple manufacturing process. With the recent development of the glass molding press (GMP) process, thermal imaging cameras using oxide-based infrared lenses can be easily mass-produced, expanding their uses. To improve the mechanical and optical properties of commercial materials consisting of ternary systems, germanate-based heavy metal oxide glasses were prepared using a melt-cooling method. The fabricated samples were evaluated for thermal, structural, and optical properties using DSC, XRD, and XRF, respectively. To derive a composition with high glass stability for lens applications, ZnO and Sb2O3 were substituted at 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mol%. The glass with 1 mol% added Sb2O3 was confirmed to have the optimal conditions, with an optical transmittance of 80 % or more, a glass transition temperature of 660 ℃, a refractive index of 1.810, and a Vickers hardness of 558. The possibility of its application as an alternative infrared lens material to existing commercial materials capable of GMP processing was confirmed.
Heavy flint optical glass(SF57HHT) is new material that has extremely high transmittance. Due to brittleness and high hardness, optical glass is one of the most difficult to materials for ultra-precision turning. According to the hypothesis of ductile machining, all materials, regardless of their hardness and brittleness, will undergo transition from brittle to ductile machining region below critical undefromed chip thickness. In this study, cutting test was carried out to evaluate cutting performance of heavy flint glass using ultra-precision machine with single crystal diamond bite. The machined workpiece surface topography, tool wear and surface roughness were examined using AFM and SEM. The experimental results indicate that the machining mode become the brittle mode to ductile mode, when the maximum undeformed chip thinkness is large than critical value. Tool wear mainly occurs on the flank face and its wear mechanism is dominated by abrasion. This study demonstrates the feasibility of SF57HHT by diamond turning.
There is an immense need to obtain nanometric surface finish on optical glass owing to the advantage of improved performance of the components. But owing to brittleness and hardness, optical glass is one of the materials that is difficult to ultra-precision turning. According to the hypothesis of ductile mode machining, regardless of their hardness and brittleness, will undergo a transition from brittle to ductile machining region below a critical undeformed chip thickness. Below this threshold, it is suggested that the energy required for plastic formation. Thus, plastic deformation is the predominant mechanism of material removal in machining these materials in this mode. An experimental study is conducted diamond cutting for machining BK7 glass. The investigation presents the feasibility of achieving nanometric surface and the understanding the mechanism of cutting glass, proving the cutting edge radius effect.
The use of lightweight aggregate (LWA) instead of ordinary aggregate may make lightweight aggregate concrete, which possesses many advantages such as lightweight, lower thermal conductivity, and better fire and seismic resistance. Recently the developments of LWA have been focused on using industrial wastes as raw materials to reduce the use of limited natural resources. In view of this, the intent of this study was to apply Taguchi optimization technique in determining process condition for producing synthetic LWA by incorporating waste thin film transition liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCD) glass powder with reservoir sediments. In the study the waste TFT-LCD glass cullet was used as an additive. It was incorporated with reservoir sediments to produce LWA. Taguchi method with an orthogonal array L16(45) and five controllable 4-level factors (i.e., cullet content, preheat temperature, preheat time, sintering temperature, and sintering time) was adopted. Then, in order to optimize the selected parameters, the analysis of variance method was used to explore the effects of the experimental factors on the performances (particle density, water absorption, bloating ratio, and loss of ignition) of the produced LWA. The results showed that it is possible to produce high performance LWA by incorporating waste TFT-LCD glass cullet with reservoir sediments. Moreover, Taguchi method is a promising approach for optimizing process condition of synthetic LWA using recycled glass cullet and reservoir sediments and it significantly reduces the number of tests.
The th ermal and optical properties of multicomponent oxide glass optical fiber by adding heavy metal oxide Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$(0-20wt%) were investigated. The fiber samples were made by the method of rod in tube. The optical loss of fiber was measured in 0.3-1.8.mu.m wavelength region. As Ga$_{2}$O$_{3}$ increased up to 20wt%, the transition and softening temperature of bulk glass were increased from 495.deg. C to 579.deg. C and from 548.deg. C to 641.deg. C, respectively. Whereas the thermal expansion coefficient was decreased from 102 to 79.1x10$^{-7}$ /.deg. C. The refractive index was increased from 1.621 to 1.665, and IR cut-off wavelength was enlarged from 4.64.mu.m to 6.1.mu.m. The optical loss of fiber was remarkably decreased in 1.146.mu.m-1.8.mu.m wavelength region.
Technical demands for aspheric glass lens formed in market increases its application from simple camera lens module to fiber optics connection module in optical engineering. WC is often used as a metal core of the aspheric glass lens, but the long life time is issued because it fabricated in high temperature and high pressure environment. High hard thin film coating of lens core increases the core life time critically. Diamond Like Carbon(DLC) thin film coating shows very high hardness and low surface roughness, i.e. low friction between a glass lens and a metal core, and thus draw interests from an optical manufacturing industry. In addition, DLC thin film coating can removed by etching process and deposit the film again, which makes the core renewable. In this study, DLC films were deposited on the SiC ceramic core. The process variable in FVA(Filtered Vacuum Arc) method was the substrate bias-voltage. Deposited thin film was evaluated by raman spectroscopy, AFM and nano indenter and measured its crystal structure, surface roughness, and hardness. After applying optimum thin film condition, the life time and crystal structure transition of DLC thin film was monitored.
By adding La$_2$O$_3$ to optical multicomponent glass composition, after making mother glass and core fiber that enable to enlarge the infrared transmittance region, then surveyed the optical properties. Through thermal analysis of the glass abstained by melt-quenching after selecting stable basic composition on devitrification and replace SiO$_2$ by 4-12wt% La$_2$O$_3$. As La$_2$O$_3$ increases up to l2wt% transition temperature, refractive index, density, deformation temperature increased, whereas thermal expansion coefficient decreased. As a result of inspectig transmittance in UV/VIS/IR region, visable region indicated the decrease of transmittance by increasing the La$_2$O$_3$ and transmittance region was enlarged by increasing the La$_2$O$_3$ in IR region. Also, fabricate core fiber at 820$^{\circ}C$ and severy the optical loss we could fact that La$_2$O$_3$ composition added 12wt% showed the minimum optical loss.
Thermal and structural stability in the glass transition region of chalcogenide glasses has been investigated in terms of thermodynamics for application to various optoelectronic devices. In this study, the compositions of $Ge_xSb_{20}Se_{80-x}$ (x = 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30) were selected to investigate the glass stability according to germanium ratios. The chalcogenide bulks were fabricated by using a traditional melt-quenching method. Thin films were deposited by a thermal evaporation system, maintaining the deposition ratio of $3{\sim}5{\AA}$ in order to have uniformity. The thermal and structural properties were measured by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The DSC analysis provided thermal parameters and theoretical glass region stabilities. The XRD analysis supported the theoretical stabilities because of where the crystallization peak data occurred.
