A series of $La_2O_3$-added zincborosilicate glasses was fabricated by systematically varying $La_2O_3$ addition up to 15mol% under the constraint of a ZnO:$B_2O_3$ ratio of 1:2. The degree of water leaching after ball milling of the prepared glasses in water medium was relatively quantified by the change in zinc peak intensity in energy dispersive spectroscopy. 8mol% of $La_2O_3$ was the most efficient addition in inhibiting the glass leaching by water. The role of $La_2O_3$ in inhibiting the leaching was explained in terms of change of structural units in the glass network. When the optimum 8mol% $La_2O_3$-added ZnO-$B_2O_3$ glass was used as sintering aid for $Al_2O_3$, the fabricated alumina-glass composite at $875^{\circ}C$ demonstrated dielectric constant of 6.11 and quality factor of 15470 GHz, indicating the potential of leaching-minimized $La_2O_3-ZnO-B_2O_3$ glass for application to low temperature co-firing ceramic technology.

Nanostructured high strength metastable Al-, Mg- and Ti-based alloys containing different amorphous, quasicrystalline and nanocrystalline phases are synthesized by non-equilibrium processing techniques. Such alloys can be prepared by quenching from the melt or by powder metallurgy techniques. This paper focuses on one hand on mechanically alloyed and ball milled powders containing different volume fractions of amorphous or nano-(quasi)crystalline phases, consolidated bulk specimens and, on the other hand. on cast specimens containing different constituent phases with different length-scale. As one example. $Mg_{55}Y_{15}Cu_{30}$- based metallic glass matrix composites are produced by mechanical alloying of elemental powder mixtures containing up to 30 vol.% $Y_2O_3$ particles. The comparison with the particle-free metallic glass reveals that the nanosized second phase oxide particles do not significantly affect the glass-forming ability upon mechanical alloying despite some limited particle dissolution. A supercooled liquid region with an extension of about 50 K can be maintained in the presence of the oxides. The distinct viscosity decrease in the supercooled liquid regime allows to consolidate the powders into bulk samples by uniaxial hot pressing. The $Y_2O_3$ additions increase the mechanical strength of the composites compared to the $Mg_{55}Y_{15}Cu_{30}$ metallic glass. The second example deals with Al-Mn-Ce and Al-Cu-Fe composites with quasicrystalline particles as reinforcements, which are prepared by quenching from the melt and by powder metallurgy. $Al_{98-x}Mn_xCe_2$ (x =5,6,7) melt-spun ribbons containing a major quasicrystalline phase coexisting with an Al-matrix on a nanometer scale are pulverized by ball milling. The powders are consolidated by hot extrusion. Grain growth during consolidation causes the formation of a micrometer-scale microstructure. Mechanical alloying of $Al_{63}Cu_{25}Fe_{12}$ leads to single-phase quasicrystalline powders. which are blended with different volume fractions of pure Al-powder and hot extruded forming $Al_{100-x}$$(Al_{0.63}Cu_{0.25}Fe_{0.12})_x$ (x = 40,50,60,80) micrometer-scale composites. Compression test data reveal a high yield strength of ${\sigma}_y{\geq}$700 MPa and a ductility of ${\varepsilon}_{pl}{\geq}$5% for than the Al-Mn-Ce bulk samples. The strength level of the Al-Cu-Fe alloys is ${\sigma}_y{\leq}$550 MPa significantly lower. By the addition of different amounts of aluminum, the mechanical properties can be tuned to a wide range. Finally, a bulk metallic glass-forming Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn alloy with in situ formed composite microstructure prepared by both centrifugal and injection casting presents more than 6% plastic strain under compressive stress at room temperature. The in situ formed composite contains dendritic hcp Ti solid solution precipitates and a few $Ti_3Sn,\;{\beta}$-(Cu, Sn) grains dispersed in a glassy matrix. The composite micro- structure can avoid the development of the highly localized shear bands typical for the room temperature defor-mation of monolithic glasses. Instead, widely developed shear bands with evident protuberance are observed. resulting in significant yielding and homogeneous plastic deformation over the entire sample.
The computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system was introduced to shorten the production time of all-ceramic restorations and the number of patient visits. Among these types of ceramic for dental CAD/CAM, they have been processed into inlay, onlay, and crown shapes using leucite-reinforced glass-ceramics to improve strength. The purpose of this study was to observe the mechanical properties and microstructure of leucite-reinforced glass-ceramics for dental CAD/CAM. Two types of leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic blocks (IPS Empress CAD, Rosetta BM) were prepared with diameter of 13 mm and thickness of 1 mm. Biaxial flexural testing was conducted using a piston-on-three-ball method at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Weibull statistics were used for the analysis of biaxial flexural strength. Fracture toughness was obtained using an indentation fracture method. Specimens were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy to examine the microstructure of the leucite crystalline phase after acid etching with 0.5% hydrofluoric acid aqueous solution for 1 minute. The results of strength testing showed that IPS Empress CAD had a mean value of $158.1{\pm}8.6MPa$ and Rosetta BM of $172.3{\pm}8.3MPa$. The fracture toughness results showed that IPS Empress CAD had a mean value of $1.28{\pm}0.19MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and Rosetta BM of $1.38{\pm}0.12MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$. The Rosetta BM sample exhibited higher strength and fracture toughness. Moreover, the crystalline phase size and ratio were increased in the Rosetta BM sample. The above results are expected to elucidate the basic mechanical properties and crystal structure characteristics of IPS Empress CAD and Rosetta BM. Additionally, they will help develop leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic materials for CAD/CAM.

Brittle materials such as glasses and ceramics, which are very weak under impact loading, show fragile failure mode due to their low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact by small spheres, high contact pressure occurs at the impacted surface causing local damage on the specimen. This damage is a dangerous factor in causing the final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda-lime glass by the impact of small spheres is explained and the effects of several constraint conditions for impact damage were studied by using soda-lime glass; that is, the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength were evaluated. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring cracks, cone cracks and several other kinds of cracks.
We fabricated green sheet by tape casting method with fluormica glass-ceramic powders for fabrication of low temperature co-firing substrate. After ball milling with organic additives, we investigated green strength and density of green sheets which were casted by doctor blade machine. Green sheets were sintered at 700 ~ 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 ~3hrs. Microstructure, linear shrinkage and dielectric constant of substrates were surveyed.
Fe based (Fe$_{68.2}$C$_{5.9}$Si$_{3.5}$B$_{6.7}$P$_{9.6}$Cr$_{2.1}$Mo$_{2.0}$Al$_{2.0}$) amorphous powder, which is a composition of iron blast cast slag, were produced by a gas atomization process, and sequently mixed with ductile Cu powder by a mechanical ball milling process. The experiment results show that the as-prepared Fe amorphous powders less than 90 $\mu$m in size has a fully amorphous phase and its weight fraction was about 73.7%. The as-atomized amorphous Fe powders had a complete spherical shape with very clean surface. Differential scanning calorimetric results of the as-atomized Fe powders less than 90 $\mu$m showed that the glass transition, T$_g$, onset crystallization, T$_x$, and super-cooled liquid range $\Delta$T=T$_x$-T$_g$ were 512, 548 and 36$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Fe amorphous powders were mixed and deformed well with 10 wt.% Cu by using AGO-2 high energy ball mill under 500 rpm.

The micron-sized indium zinc tin oxide (IZTO) particles were prepared by spray pyrolysis from aqueous precursor solution for indium, zinc, and tin and organic additives such as citric acid (CA) and ethylene glycol (EG) were added to aqueous precursor solution for indium, zinc, and tin. The obtained IZTO particles prepared by spray pyrolysis from the aqueous solution without organic additives had spherical and filled morphologies, whereas the IZTO particles obtained with organic additives had more hollow and porous morphologies. The micron-sized IZTO particles with organic additives were changed fully to nano-sized IZTO particles, whereas the micron-sized IZTO particles without organic additives were not changed fully to nano-sized IZTO particle after post-treatment at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and wet-ball milling for 24 hours. Surface resistances of micron-sized IZTO's before post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling were much higher than those of nano-sized IZTO's after post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling. From IZTO with composition of 80 wt. % $In_2O_3$, 10 wt. % ZnO, and 10 wt. % $SnO_2$ which showed a smallest surface resistance IZTO after post-heat treatment and wet-ball milling, thin films were deposited on glass substrates by pulsed DC magnetron sputtering, and the electrical and optical properties were investigated.

The friction behaviour of Si-wafer, diamond-like carbon (DLC) and two self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) namely dimethyldichlorosilane (DMDC) and diphenyl-dichlorosilane (DPDC) coated on Si-wafer was studied under loading conditions in milli-newton (mN) range. Experiments were performed using a ball-on-flat type reciprocating micro-tribo tester. Glass balls with various radii 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm and 1 mm were used. The applied normal load was in the range of 1.5 mN to 4.8 mN. Results showed that the friction increased with the applied normal load in the case of all the test materials. It was also observed that friction was affected by the ball size. Friction increased with the increase in the ball size in the case of Si-wafer. The SAMs also showed a similar trend, but had lower values of friction than those of Si-wafer In-terestingly, for DLC it was observed that friction decreased with the increase in the ball size. This distinct difference in the behavior of friction in DLC was attributed to the difference in the operating mechanism. It was observed that Si-wafer and DLC exhibited wear, whereas wear was absent in the SAMs. Observations showed that solid-solid adhesion was dominant in Si-wafer, while plowing in DLC. The wear in these two materials significantly Influenced their friction. In the case of SAMs their friction behaviour was largely influenced by the nature of their molecular chains.
