  • This study aims to investigate the career development experience of youth in late adolescence who entered a different university after taking a semester off (as known as Bansu in Korean), in depth, applying a phenomenological research method. For the research, this study selected seven adolescents as research participants to reveal the essential meaning of their experience, vividly. The data were analyzed by Giorgi's method to draw components of the experience of research participants. As a result of the research, the career development experience of youth in late adolescence who entered a different university after taking a semester off was systematized into 19 sub-categories and structured into four main categories: "high school years in which academic record was more important than aptitude", "the step away from the dream, being forced to proceed to college", "the time of study to take the exam again, which was an advantage and disadvantage at the same time" and "the wish unfulfilled even with the success of entering a different university." It turned out that the main topic was "the repeated way even after passing the repeat sign." They took the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) once again and came back to the narrow way to enter a prestigious university, but they still compromised the standard made by the older generation. This study has significance for late adolescents' welfare and happiness in that it explored the in-depth meanings of the career development experience of youth who entered a different university by taking the CSAT again after taking a semester off. Lastly, based upon the situation of the increase in the number of students who take the CSAT again, this study suggested better measures for career development during adolescence and the promotion of their quality of life.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the single-person household's demand for a wearable healthcare system that provides the ischemic heart disease and cardiopulmonary alarm to be developed. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with six unmarried individuals in their thirties who were in the workplace and the results were interpreted by Giorgi's phenomenological analysis method. The study results indicated that although the wearable healthcare system was implemented with high-technology functions that serve the intended purpose, it is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as aesthetics, comfort, and ease of washing. In this study, we found that the variables influencing the interviewees' intent to accept healthcare services are complex and cannot be attributed to one factor alone; this study has also shown a variety of interpersonal correlations. In addition, although health-care research focusing on the elderly has been conducted in the past, it is suggested that younger generations such as those in their thirties can also be studied as health care service adopters.

  • This study explored the lived experiences of high school students who experienced a norm-referenced evaluation with the Naesin system. The participants were 15 high school students who resided in the areas of Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Busan. This study adopted a phenomenological research method, which is developed by Giorgi. The study resulted in 370 meaning units, 71 summaries of meaning units, 26 sub-constituents, and 9 constituents. The results showed that participants experienced their relationships with classmates were centered around competitions and they experienced the sense of repeated frustration with their academic goals. Participants perceived that their personal values equated with their academic rankings and they anticipated academic rankings becoming their future social rankings. Low rankings with good performance, learning for exam, and unfair treatment in school made them realize that the education is not for learning but for differentiating students. Participants have found the ways to know better about reality and self-regulated their thoughts and emotions. Further, this study identified resilient aspects of the participants such as support from parents and teachers and hopeful thoughts. This study discussed the meaning of the findings and implications of the findings.

  • The objective of this study was to understand the countertransference and its meanings, experienced by novice supervisors in the supervision. For this, total seven novice supervisors with supervision experience for five years or less were purposively sampled, and then the in-depth interviews were conducted. As a phenomenological research, the collected data was analyzed in accordance with the Giorgi's 4-Stages, suitable for discovering the phenomenon and its meanings, experienced by research participants. In the results, there were six themes such as 'difficulty to realize the countertransference', 'expectation and impatience of supervisee's growth', 'identification with supervisee', 'hope for maintaining a good relationship with supervisee', 'avoidance of supervision', and 'struggle for standing up as an expert'. The unsolved problems and desires of novice supervisors were revealed as countertransference, which influenced the supervision. The results of this study imply that the countertransference of supervision has not only negative aspects, but also a positive meaning in the aspect that they could deeply understand themselves and others.

  • This study is to examine how a person's sense is changing in the process of gambling addiction and recovery. For this purpose, the ten of gambling abstinences were purposefully selected for intensive depth interviews. The data collected by thess interviews were analysed by Giorgi's(1970; 1985) phenomenological method. Meaningful units were categorized into 18 'emerging themes', and integrated by the total of 6 'essential themes' considering the interrelations of the emerging themes. Major findings of the study are as follows. Firstly, participants of this study lost their general senses in the addiction process by focusing on specific senses such as seeing and hearing. Secondly, participants have begun to regain the lost senses in the process of recovery, even though going through the 'pains of withdrawal'. Thirdly, the participants' experiences of recovery could be summarized as 'a recovery process of the general senses lost by gambling'. Based upon these findings, some suggestions for helping practice were proposed such as 'provision of informations about senses', 'program development of sense stimulation', and 'application of sense recovery training'.

  • This study aimed to have an understanding of how the users of comprehensive care service for the aged experience the user-centered services. For this, this study placed focus on the essential aspects of the experience of using the service including the meaning of the choice of users being emphasized as practical principles in user-centered services as well as the real context of such a choice. The research methods suggested by Giorgi in phenomenological studies were adopted for data analysis, and intensive interviews were conducted for 10 users living in Seoul who are over 65 years of age. According to the results of the analysis, the interviewees' experience of the service as users were categorized into the elements of "restricted choice of service", "unstrengthened right for the users", "ambivalent emotion about the service", and "awareness of the importance of the relationship with the caregiver", and the essential phenomenon in their experience of the service was "the importance of relationship within restricted choice". This study found out that the choice or self-determination of users was still restricted in the usage of user-centered services. It also found out that the users think it more important to have a positive relationship with the caregiver than the choice of the service granted to them. On the basis of such research results, political implications are proposed to help the establishment of user-centered services.

  • In order to find out policy and practical implications to support recovering drug addicts in a holistic way, This study conducted in-depth interviews with five research participants using Giorgi's phenomenological study method to understand the meaning of spiritual experience of recovering drug addicts. According to data analysis, these spirituality experiences appeared as two thematic themes: 'experience of relationship with a divine being' and 'experience of inherent transcendence'. Three sub-themes of 'fear and scary existence', 'hanging object' and 'embracing existence' were derived from the essence theme of 'experience of relationship with a divine being' and 'immanent transcendental experience' was conceptualized into four sub-themes: 'facing existence', 'psychological reconstruction', 'mental maturity', and 'a way to go alone'. Based on this, spiritual experiences of recovery drug addicts showed that religion itself exerted a considerable influence on their spiritual experience and their spiritual experience was closely related to the recovery of humanity. Also, 'intrinsic transcendental experience' suggested that two essential themes of spiritual experience were closely interrelated in a mutual cyclical relationship. Based on the results, We discusses the major intervention plan for the recovery drug addicts that the social welfare system can consider.
