The purpose of the present study was to examine the emotional characteristics related to gifted children's happiness, such as happiness index, optimism, psychological wellbeing, and school education happiness. For the study, 201 gifted students who were currently enrolled in gifted education centers, 124 potentially gifted students who were nominated by teachers for their scientific interests and high performances, and 141 general middle school students participated in the study. The results indicated that both the gifted and the potentially gifted students showed significantly higher emotional characteristics related to happiness compared to the general students. There was no significant difference between the gifted and the potentially gifted in the diverse aspects of happiness. Interestingly, significant interaction between gender and giftedness was found. Girls were happier when they were identified as the gifted, compared to the boys. Variables related to the happiness were also investigated, and the results indicated that the peer relationship and the family happiness were the most important variables that explained gifted children's happiness in general.
Russia is a country which is interested in mathematics education for the gifted students for a long time. Some aspect of education for the gifted students in Russia (for example, mathematics curriculum of the Russian physio-mathematics school, mathematics education by correspondence for sifted students etc.) has been partially studied. The purpose of this work is to introduce various systems of the mathematics education for the gifted students in Russia, and to draw significant conclusion for systematizing gifted education in Korea. In order to achieve this goal, we analyzed Russian literatures and articles published in Russia by the physio-mathematics school, ministry of education, and etc. In this article, we gave some characteristics of the various types of gifted education in Russia, and the practical curriculum for the gifted education.
The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of convergence gifted education program for science-physical education on self-efficacy of the gifted students in elementary school. So, the program was carried out for the gifted students in the 5th grade of elementary school during the 8 hours on two subjects, we investigated the cause and effect through the pre-post test of self-efficacy and interview. The results were as follows. First, it was observed that it would have a meaningful effect to improve the self-efficacy of gifted students who performed gifted education program for science-physical education convergence. Especially, the results of 'confidence', 'difficulty preferences' was statistic meaningful differences. Second, convergence gifted education program for science-physical education enhanced confidence and challenge of consciousness of students. Especially, when products of gifted students are applied to real-world valued the higher confidence. Therefore, we found that in order to increase the gifted students' self-efficacy, gifted education program is configured by applying the products to the actual field.
Gyeonggi science high school for the gifted (GSHS) installed 60cm telescope, which is waiting for student observers. It is essential to understand the characteristics of the photometric system, consisting of telescope, filter, and CCD, to get reliable data. CCD images of SA98 Landolt standard field and M67 were obtained on 19th March 2020. The images of each field were combined by filters, i.e., we ignored the monochromatic atmospheric extinction since the photometric objects themselves are standard stars. 24 standard stars in SA98 field and 12 standard stars in M67 were used to derive the tentative transformation equation between our bv photometric system and Johnson BV photometric system. In this poster, we present the preliminary standardization result for Johnson BV photometric system in GSHS 60cm telescope. The reproductivity is discussed by comparing color coefficients of two fields. We plan to extend this process to Johnsons-Cousins BVRI photometric system and narrow-band filters for flux calibration.
In this study, we investigated the perceptions of elementary school teachers on the use of analogy generation in scientifically-gifted education. The relationships among the perceptions and the self-perception as teacher for scientifically-gifted students were also investigated. A survey was administered to 119 elementary school teachers, and in-depth interviews with some teachers were conducted. The results revealed that the teachers had a relatively good understanding of the advantages/disadvantages of analogy generation in cognitive, affective, and learning environmental aspects. Their perceptions on the usability of analogy generation and their willingness to practice of it in scientifically-gifted education was also positive. They highly perceived on the various factors related to effective uses of it in scientifically-gifted education. Their self-perception as teacher for scientifically-gifted students was comparatively low, and significantly related with the perceptions on the advantages of it, the usability, the practical methods to use, and the various factors related to effective uses in scientifically-gifted education. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
The Center for Science Gifted Education (CSGE) of Chongju National University of Education was established in 1998 with the financial support of the Korea. Science & Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). In fact, we had prepared mathematics and science gifted education program beginning in 1997. It was possible due to the commitment of faculty members with an interest in gifted education. Now we have 5 classes in Mathematics, two of which are fundamental, one of which is a strengthened second-grade class gifted elementary school students, and one a fundamental class, and one a strengthened class for gifted middle school students in Chungbuk province. Each class consists of 16 students selected by a rigorous examination and filtering process. Also we have a mentoring system for particularly gifted students in mathematics. We have a number of programs for Super-Saturday, Summer School, Winter School, and Mathematics and Science Gifted Camp. Each program is suitable for 90 or 180 minutes of class time. The types of tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving tasks. Levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be further divided into grade 5 and under, grade 6, and grade 7 and over. Types of the tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving task. Also levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be divided into the level of lower than grade 5, level of grade 6, and level of more than grade 7. Three tasks developed and practiced are reported in this article.
In this study, we have analysed and compared the cognitive, affective, and emotional aspects of the mathematically gifted, the scientifically gifted, and common middle school students in cognitive, affective, and emotional aspects. The mathematically gifted students are proved to have better continuous/simultaneous information processing, more positive mathematical disposition, more preference to difficult tasks, and higher EQ than the common students do. On another hand, no difference is found between the mathematically gifted and the scientifically gifted students in creative problem solving ability however, the mathematically gifted have more self-confidence, more curiosity for mathematics, stronger will, and more disposition to monitor and reflect, and more efficient self-control than the scientifically gifted do. In short, the mathematically gifted are superior to common students in mostly all aspects, and better than the scientifically gifted in the affective part.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the state of science teaching anxiety of elementary teachers for the scientifically gifted according to their personal variables such as gender, career in education and gifted education, training course for gifted education, participation in meeting related to gifted education. The subjects in this study were 64 elementary school teachers who were in charge of science gifted education. The instrument to assess their science teaching anxiety was Westerback's S-STAI, modified in this study to be suitable for science gifted education. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS. The findings of the study were as follows: The teachers for gifted felt more teaching anxiety in gifted classes than in normal classes on the whole. There were statistically significant differences in their personal variables such as gender, career in education experience, experience of taking gifted education training courses, and participation in meeting related to gifted education. Implications related to reduce the gifted education teachers' teaching anxiety were discussed in depth.
The Purpose of this study was to explore the methods of generalization and errors pattern generated by mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students in elementary school. In this research, 6 problems corresponding to the x+a, ax, ax+c, $ax^2$, $ax^2+c$, $a^x$ patterns were given to 156 students. Conclusions obtained through this study are as follows. First, both group were the best in symbolically generalizing ax pattern, whereas the number of students who generalized $a^x$ pattern symbolically was the least. Second, mathematically gifted students in elementary school were able to algebraically generalize more than 79% of in x+a, ax, ax+c, $ax^2$, $ax^2+c$, $a^x$ patterns. However, non-gifted students succeeded in algebraically generalizing more than 79% only in x+a, ax patterns. Third, students in both groups failed in finding commonness in phased numbers, so they solved problems arithmetically depending on to what extent it was increased when they failed in reaching generalization of formula. Fourth, as for the type of error that students make mistake, technical error was the highest with 10.9% among mathematically gifted students in elementary school, also technical error was the highest as 17.1% among non-gifted students. Fifth, as for the frequency of error against the types of all patterns, mathematically gifted students in elementary school marked 17.3% and non-gifted students were 31.2%, which means that a majority of mathematically gifted students in elementary school are able to do symbolic generalization to a certain degree, but many non-gifted students did not comprehend questions on patterns and failed in symbolic generalization.
This study explores high school gifted students' perception of cheating in school using the concept mapping method. The map shows the gifted students' concept structure and the different perception between gifted and non-gifted students on cheating. For the purpose, 63 high school gifted students participated at the brainstorming stage to gather the possible related statements. Finally, 64 statements were confirmed and these were divided and evaluated by 13 focus group students. Then, they were analyzed by multidimensional scaling and processed by hierarchical cluster analysis. The results compiled from this procedure show that high school gifted students' perception of cheating is classified into five clusters: "unacceptable cheating behaviors of friends", "an inseparable relation among social structure, giftedness and cheating", "conflict, coping skills, and tolerance related to the cheating", "immorality in one's inner person" and "the judgement based on morality and social justice". In addition, 150 gifted students and 160 non-gifted students checked the degree of agreement to each statement with the likert 6 points scale and the result showed that there was no significant difference in two clusters, "unacceptable cheating behaviors of friends" and "the judgement based on morality and justice", while it turned out that there were significant perception gaps in three clusters, "inseparable relation among social structure, giftedness and cheating", "conflict, coping skills, and tolerance related to the cheating" and "immorality in one's inner person". Implications of the study related to the gifted students' moral behaviors were discussed in depth.
