  • The Center for Science Gifted Education (CSGE) of Chongju National University of Education was established in 1998 with the financial support of the Korea. Science & Engineering Foundation (KOSEF). In fact, we had prepared mathematics and science gifted education program beginning in 1997. It was possible due to the commitment of faculty members with an interest in gifted education. Now we have 5 classes in Mathematics, two of which are fundamental, one of which is a strengthened second-grade class gifted elementary school students, and one a fundamental class, and one a strengthened class for gifted middle school students in Chungbuk province. Each class consists of 16 students selected by a rigorous examination and filtering process. Also we have a mentoring system for particularly gifted students in mathematics. We have a number of programs for Super-Saturday, Summer School, Winter School, and Mathematics and Science Gifted Camp. Each program is suitable for 90 or 180 minutes of class time. The types of tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving tasks. Levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be further divided into grade 5 and under, grade 6, and grade 7 and over. Types of the tasks developed can be divided into experimental, group discussion, open-ended problem solving, and exposition and problem solving task. Also levels of the tasks developed for talented elementary students in mathematics can be divided into the level of lower than grade 5, level of grade 6, and level of more than grade 7. • Considering the expansion of gifted education and the quantitative increase the Gifted Science Academy, it is important to seek the appropriate methods of mathematics teaching for gifted high school students. In particular, to reflect current trends in mathematics education that the mathematical creativity is being presented as an important educational goal, Now is the time we need student-centered discussion model for regular mathematics classes, not teacher-centered instruction in the way of knowledge transfer. In this study, class model of preparation-based discussion was designed and applied to the regular mathematics classes for the Science Academy. Students participating in this research had a lot of pressure in preparation activities for discussion, but they said that the discussion compared to traditional lecture was mathematically meaningful experience. These findings suggest the implication that class model of preparation-based discussion can be meaningfully applied to the regular mathematics class.

  • This research intends to understand classroom culture of gifted youths in secondary mathematics. For this purpose, we have observed ethnographically the mathematics classes of gifted youths for eight months at two Science Education Centers for Gifted Youths. We have collected qualitative data using the methods, participation observation, interviewing, video taping, recording, collecting assistant materials. And these data were closely connected and analyzed synthetically. From this, we found the followings; First, gifted youths in mathematics evaluate the academic abilities as the best standard for their friendship. Second, the gifted youths in secondary mathematics are under an obsession that they should act like gifted youths. Third, even though they know the merits of class type of inquiry and discussions, they didn't participate actively in those types of class. Forth, main differences of classes between Gifted Education Centers and general middle school come from the difference of class type, the roles of teachers and students.

  • This study investigated the analysis of examples that gifted students' realizing the learning objectives through teaching method of the teacher's questions and advice. 6 gifted students were selected to be examined with 'magic square' in class. The teacher emphasized the learning objectives without directly proposing. Whereas, the teacher proposed the learning objectives by questioning and giving advice to students. After the class, the 6 gifted students were surveyed to answer about realizing the learning objectives of mathematics (about contents, process, and attitude in mathematics learning objectives). Mathematical gifted students thought about the process that consists of deductive thinking, analogic thinking, extensive thinking, creative thinking, and critical thinking. But, they underestimated the deductive thinking. So the teacher should develop the questions and advice to teach the mathematical gifted students according to the level of them. The high level of mathematical gifted students were able to realize the value and the importance of the mathematical attitude, while the low level of mathematical gifted students were able to realize them little. For this reason, the teacher should apprehend the level of the students, and propose materials and contents of the learning. The teacher should also make the gifted students realize value, will, and personality of mathematics by questions and advice. Lastly, like it is needed in general classes, there should be a constant researches and improvements about questions of the teacher that are appropriate to each student's learning abilities and cognition ability.

  • This paper is to investigate how two elementary school teacher's belief mathematics as educational content, and teaching and learning mathematics as a part of educational methodology, and what the two teachers believe towards gifted children and their education, and what the classes demonstrate and its effects on the sociomathematical norms. To investigate this matter, the study has been conducted with two teachers who have long years of experience in teaching gifted children, but fall into different belief categories. The results of the study show that teacher A falls into the following category: the essentiality of mathematics as 'traditional', teaching mathematics as 'blended', and learning mathematics as 'traditional'. In addition, teacher A views mathematically gifted children as autonomous researchers with low achievement and believes that the teacher is a learning assistant. On the other hand, teacher B falls into the following category: the essentiality of mathematics as 'non-traditional', teaching mathematics as 'non-traditional, and learning mathematics as 'non-traditional.' Also, teacher B views mathematically gifted children as autonomous researchers with high achievement and believes that the teacher is a learning guide. In the teacher A's class for gifted elementary school students, problem solving rule and the answers were considered as important factors and sociomathematical norms that valued difficult arithmetic operation were demonstrated However, in the teacher B's class for gifted elementary school students, sociomathematical norms that valued the process of problem solving, mathematical explanations and justification more than the answers were demonstrated. Based on the results, the implications regarding the education of mathematically gifted students were investigated.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the current status of a program for an elementary math class for gifted students in Daegu and to propose a remedy. The main results of this thesis are as follows. First, goals of the gifted class and the basic operation direction were satisfactory, however plans for parent training programs and self evaluation of the classes were not presented. Therefore, it needs when and how to do for specific plan of gifted class evaluation and parent training programs. Second, The annual instruction plan has been restricted to the subject matter education and field trips and has not included specific teaching methods in accordance with the contents of learning program. The management of gifted classes, therefore, requires not only the subject matter education and field trips but also output presentations, leadership programs, voluntary activities, events and camps which promote the integral development of gifted students. Third, there is no duplication of content to another grade, and various activities did not cover the whole scope of math topics(eg. number and operation, geometry, measurement, pattern) equally. In accordance with elementary mathematics characteristics, teachers should equally distribute time in whole range of mathematics while they teach students in the class because it is critical to discover gifted students throughout the whole curriculum of elementary mathematics. Fourth, as there are insufficient support and operational lack of material development, several types of programs are not utilized and balanced. It is necessary for teachers to try to find the type of teaching methods in accordance with the circumstances and content, so that students can experience several types of programs. If through this study, we can improve the development, management and quality of gifted math programs, it would further the development of gifted education.
