  • To obtain pure lines for breeding $F_1$ varieties of spreading surfinia and wave petunia, Petunia ${\times}$ hybrida, 20 lines of surfinia petunia and 28 lines of wave petunia that were considered uniform in growth and flowering characteristics were selected by self-pollination of the fifth($S_5$) or the seventh generation($S_7$). The 20 selected lines of surfinia petunia had the branch number ranged from 6.0 to 11.0 cm, and the internode length ranged from 2.0 to 4.2 cm. Among them, ten lines, including '$Pe99-017^7$' were above 60 cm of plant width, above 300 leaves in a plant. Fourteen lines including '$Pe99-017^7$' were more than 150 in the number of flower. In the petal color, thirteen lines, including '$Pe99-017^7$', were red-purple; three, including '$Pe99-007^7$', were purple; '$Pe04-086^7$' and '$Pe04-159^7$' were violet; and line '$Pe072-1^7$' was white. Eight lines including '$Pe02-205-2^5$' ranged from 4.0 to 5.0 cm of flowers diameter, and seven lines including '$Pe04-086^5$' ranged from 3.0 to 4.0 cm of leaf length, which is relatively low. Germination rate of the lines was more than 50%. In the wave petunia, the branch number of the 28 selected lines ranged from 8.0 to 13.0 cm, and the internode length ranged from 1.0 to 3.2 cm, which is relatively higher than surfinia petunias. Among them, ten lines, including '$Pe99-020^7$' were above 60 cm of plant width, above 200 leaves in a plant. Twelve lines including '$Pe04-034-2^5$' were more than 150 in the number of flower. In the petal color, eighteen lines, including '$Pe99-020^7$', were red-purple; three, including '$Pe04-113-4^5$', were red; three, including '$Pe04-263^5$', were white; '$Pe04-201^5$' and '$Pe04-263^5$' were violet blue; and line '$Pe04-072-5^5$' was purple. Nine lines including '$Pe04-201^5$' ranged from 4.0 to 5.0 cm of flowers diameter, and eleven lines including '$Pe04-263^5$' ranged from 3.0 to 4.0 cm of leaf length, which is relatively low. • To understand the relationship between environmental factors and phytoplankton community structures and why early outbreaks of Cochlodinium polykrikoides occur in the inner bay of Korea, short-term investigations were conducted at 17 stations in the eastern part of the South Sea of Korea, with sessions every two weeks from July 7 to August 24, 2016. The water temperature increased from $22.3^{\circ}C$ in the first survey to $28.4^{\circ}C$ in the fourth survey, which was a rise of about $6.01^{\circ}C$. Salinity was relatively high at Stns. 8 13 in the inner bay. In the first survey, rainfall of about 150 mm was observed, so nutrients were supplied at a high level and a high concentrate of Chl. a was observed. Cryptophyta (Crpytomonas spp.) represented 58.3 % of the community, followed by Bacillariophyta at 33.8 %. In particular, at Stn. 5, Dinophyta Prorocentrum spp. accounted for a very high percentage, 32.2 %. In the second survey, low phytoplankton populations were observed, and Bacillariophyta (Chaetoceros spp.) accounted for 61.0 %. At Stn. 4, Skeletonema spp. showed high populations but did not appear at other stations even at a low density. In the third and fourth surveys, phytoplankton populations were very low. Bacillariophyta represented 78.0 % in the third study and 73.3 % in the fourth. Interestingly, although the appearance of C. polykrikoides was investigated at the beginning of the red tide in the coastal area, they were not observed inshore, implying that the likelihood of inflow by the germination of resting cysts was low for the inner bay during this study period. In addition, environmental characteristics such as salinity and nutrient presence were significantly different between sampling stations due to the existence of a semi-closed bay in the southern sea, resulting in dominant phytoplankton species and community composition differing in these short-term investigations.

  • This study was conducted to provide growth characteristics and stand information in preparation for natural regeneration method and silvicultural treatment of seed tree method in Korean red pine stands by using the field inventoried data 18 years after the seed tree regeneration method in 2001 and analyzing the stand and sapling characteristics. The study area was located in the Research Forest of Kangwon National University, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do. In November 2018, we collected tree measurement factors, such as diameter at breast height (DBH), height, crown class, stem quality, tree age, and annual height increment on the established plots. We calculated the basal area, volume, height-diameter ratio (HD ratio), and additional stand density variables such as the relative density and %stocking to analyze the managed stands. The number of mother trees was 58 trees/ha, with a 17.7% stocking level, whereas the number of saplings was 2,330 trees/ha, with a 79.0% stocking level. In germination, the age distribution of saplings ranged from 2001 to 2007, with most belonging to 15-16 years. The development condition of saplings was 10 cm in DBH and 8 m in height. DBH and height were higher as the crown class is more dominant, and this difference was statistically significant in the analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple comparison test (p<0.0001). HD ratio ranged mostly between 80% and 90%, and more than 95% of sapling stems were of high quality, with a straight, unbroken top, non-sweep, and non-diseased stem. On average, the annual height increment of saplings was 21.9 cm at 1 year, 43.3 cm at 5 years, 54.3 cm at 10 years, and 64.3 cm at 15 years. The overall height growth with age increased smoothly. According to the analysis of covariance, the annual height growth by crown class differed significantly. The regression analysis parameters revealed that annual height growth increased with age and dominant crown class.

  • 'Manbaek' is a bacterial blight resistant mid-late maturing rice cultivar with high grain quality. 'Manbeak' was derived from anther culture using the backcross combination, $Hopum^*2/SR30075$. 'Hopum' is a mid-late maturing rice cultivar with high grain quality and 'SR30075' is a pyramid line carrying three bacterial blight resistance genes. 'Manbaek' was selected through the pedigree method, yield trials, and local adaptability tests. 'Manbeak' carrying two bacterial blight resistance gene Xa3 and xa5 showed high-level and broad-spectrum resistance against bacterial blight. 'Manbaek' was resistant to K3a, mostly virulent race in Korea, and exhibited resistance reaction against 16 Korean bacterial blight isolates. 'Manbaek' was a mid-late maturing rice. The heading date of 'Manbaek' was August 19th, which was 5 days later than that of 'Nampyeong'. Manbaek' was a lodging-tolerant rice with short culm and dark green leaf. Due to the low viviparous germination, 'Manbaek' could be a useful material to prevent pre-harvest sprouting. 'Mabeak' was resistant to bacterial blight and rice stripe virus, but susceptible to other virus diseases and insect pests. The yield of 'Manbaek' was similar to 'Nampyeong'. 'Manbaek' showed excellent grain appearance and good tastes of cooked rice, so that it could contribute to improving the quality of bacterial blight resistant cultivars. 'Manbaek', bacterial blight resistant cultivar with high grain quality, is suitable for the cultivation at bacterial blight prone area and has been utilized in the breeding programs for enhancing the resistance against bacterial blight (Registration No. 6069).
