  • In order to image the distribution of permeability in granitic rocks, we carried out two-dimensional (2D) resistivity profiling, together with in-situ permeability tests, electrical logging of boreholes, and resistivity measurements of rock core samples in a laboratory. Based on the electrical logging and in-situ permeability data from boreholes, we obtained empirical equations which relate resistivity and permeability of the granitic rocks in the area studied. We then applied the empirical equation to a 2D resistivity section, to produce a 2D permeability section of the granitic rocks. In this paper, we present details of the field data and of the procedure for conversion from the resistivity section to a permeability section. The observed relationship between resistivity and permeability of the rocks is also discussed.

  • Two dimensional Fourier transform can be used for the upward continuation of gravity or magnetic field data acquired at given altitude over a rectangular area. Earth's curvature is often neglected in most potential field continuations, however, it should be considered over several hundred kilometer field area. In this study, we developed a new method retaining terms of Earth's curvature to better perform the continuation of potential field on spherical patch area.

  • We developed a modeling and visualization software that can analyze 3-dimensional spatial information in the ArcView environment. The software constructs and visualizes an object in 3 dimensional space from the input data given a number of horizontal cross-sections. The software can generate and visualize the cross-sections of the object in any azimuth and inclination. Utilizing the program users can modify the 3-D shape of the object by interactively editing the cross-sections.

  • We investigated the distorting factors of velocity structure reconstructed by traveltime inversion. The set of models that fit the data in a numerical sense usually contains unrealistic models. Reconstructed velocity structure was enhanced because unreasonable models were eliminated by defining constraint of variable grid using a priori information. To correct time delay of source explosion, which distorts traveltime tomograms, terms for correction of time delay was formulated into equation of travel time tomography.

  • We developed a modeling and visualization software that can analyze 3-dimensional seismic data. The software divides 3 dimensional space into a series of vertical and horizontal polygons, and allows the various seismic attributes and other spatial information to be stored on these polygons. The program can pick a particular pattern in semi-automatic mode, and store the pattern in the spatial DB. The pattern can be modeled and visualized in 3 dimensional space.

  • A scheme for missing-trace interpolation of linear events is proposed. For a two-dimensional seismic dataset which contains linear events, a post-interpolation spectrum can be estimated from a portion of the original aliased spectrum. The restoration of missing trace data is accomplished by minimizing the energy after applying a filter which has an amplitude spectrum that is inverse to the estimated spectrum.

  • Recently seismic tomography has been widely used to visualize subsurface structure for resource explorations and construction site evaluation. We studied a way to include fresnel zone concept in the conventional ray-based traveltime tomography. The algorithm developed uses the same order of computing time as the conventional traveltime to mography but incorporates the rigorous wavepath concept of wave-equation tomography. Some experiments to synthetic and real data show reasonable results compared to conventional ray-based traveltime tomography.

  • We have developed an one-dimensional (ID) inversion program that can invert multiple frequency small-loop EM data from horizontal coplanar (HCP) and vertical coplanar (VCP) configurations. The inverse problem is solved using least-squares method with active constraint balancing (ACB) method and Jacobian matrix is calculated analytically. Tests using synthetic data from simple ID models indicate that conductivity and depth of each layer can be estimated properly when both real and imaginary data are used together.

  • Studies on Earth's rotation and tide since the 19th century are briefly summarized. The theories of precession, nutation, polar motion, and periodic/secular changes in the rate of rotation are described individually. In addition, a brief review of the Milankovitch theory - the hypothesis of the relationship between the Earth's spin/orbital rotational state and the ice ages - is given. Finally, Earth's tides and their theoretical models are briefly explained. Some detailed technical content is summarized in the appendices.

  • For seismic response analysis of rockfill dam, dynamic material properties, by field test, are needed. Density and elastic wave profiles have to be known to get an information of the material properties of structure. In this study, various field tests are applied to the example of rockfill dam to get an information of dynamic material properties and seismic safety is evaluated by seismic response analysis with the result of field tests.
