Phytoliths, silica microfossil that produced within and between cells and tissues of plants are especially yielded in Gramineae with many different forms and can attribute to the reconstruction of climatic and environmental changes and agriculture activity of the Quaternary. The phytoliths in soil can remain for long periods of time, because of strong resistance to physical and chemical weathering. The spatial range of study is too small due to deposition of phytoliths directly to the soil. There are difficulties of phytoliths identification because of multiplicity and redundancy, so far uniform and exact classification scheme has not been adopted. Therefore we attempted phytolith classification system applied to Korea. The paleoenvironmental reconstruction research using phytholith are applicated in many parts of studies. Also high-resolution paleoclimatic reconstruction expected to be possible using phytolith indices of Iph and Ic as well as climatic indicator of phytolith morphology.

Following the previous study, we report a complementary dating data on the silty layers deposited in paleo-tidal conditions of the study area, Dangjeong-ri, Seocheon-gun and suggest coastal terrain development processes over the past 200,000 years. Based on the dating results, the silty layers distributed up to 25 m above mean sea level were deposited between 171 and 183 ka, and the gravel layer deposited in a fluvial environment of a paleo-Dangjeong stream was found to have formed between 78 and 83 ka. Considering relative altitudes of distribution, an uplift rate of the study area in the western coast is judged to be relatively 0.5~0.7 low to that of Pohang area in the eastern coast. Compared to Busan and Sacheon areas in the southern coast, it is assumed that an uplift rate of the study area shows a similar level with those during the late Quaternary.

The canals of China·Northern Europe are different from those of Korea in the phases of the times and physical environment as follows. As the coefficient of river regime is high and the slopes of river is high in our country, the sediments are much deposited on the floor and river channels are meandered and the depth of water are low. So we should dredge the river floor and should construct the dams and lock gates. These will cause streams to be late and to be flooded. The rising and falling of groundwater tables may be fatal to the buildings. The ecosystem will be ruined by water pollution and rising of water levels. We are concerned about the economy of the canals, the low velocity of the canals, reduction of the transportation cost, transshipment cost and terminal cost, tourism·leisure-typed waterway and extreme cost of waterway development. It is proper for us to put in good order and control waterway simply by means of annual schedule, not to construct canal.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the history of phenomenon(hereinafter called mass-movement) of movement of inorganic material originated from hillslope by denudation of hillslope surrounding the watershed during Holocen period in the Chaamgol watershed(hereinafter called study watershed) uppermost stream of Maegokcheon Cheonan-si Chungnam. To do this, for the object of allivium distributed in valley bottom of study watershed, facies analysis, radiocarbon dating and grain size analysis were conducted and geomorphological analysis on study watershed conducted together. The result is like the following. It was confirmed that over around 9,100yrBP~to recent due to a few times of mass-movement occurred in time scale of 102~103 years, a large quantity of inorganic material is mixed in organic material layer originated from wetland formed in valley bottom of study watershed or exists between organic material layers. And it was found that in study watershed, mass-movement occurred in instable period of hillslope after the Early Holocen existed at least 8 times (M1 period~M8 period) and wetland environment formed in the stable period of hill slope existed total 4 times (W1 period~W4 period). This analysis result will be used in the future as basic material in research of Holocen climate change of Maegokcheon watershed and in restoration of denudation process of hillslope following this.

Research achievement of Korean geographers on karst studies was evaluated based on the number of publications for the past fifty years, which were divided into four main periods, including beginning, youth, growth, and maturity stages. The descriptive statistics of research papers published in major geography journals were computed and these articles were classified according to their main subjects and study areas. The role of moisture is particularly important in Karst geomorphology compared to the other geomorphological fields. The morphology, landscape, and formation processes of tropical and temperate karst are different from each other, and the regional and altitudinal characteristics of karst environments are significantly diverse. Thus, it is likely that the detailed records of climatic changes are preserved in the northeast Asian karst landform. Since karst geomorphology can be a major cause of natural hazards, such as collapsed surfaces or subsidence, which are associated with anthropogenic activities, including underground-water pumping and land use, education and training of physical geographers, specializing on monsoon effects, distributions of limestone, and soil characteristics, are critical issues to foster the capacity of disaster management in the nation. Moreover, knowing that the unique and spectacular landscape of karst geomorphology is a valuable, natural resource of tourism and has aesthetic values on its own, contributions of geographers to the introduction, conservation, research, and development of karst environment should be emphasized.

This paper describes a dune field on shoreline of Young Gwang. To clarify geomorphic characteristics, made an analysis of grain size of the sand sediments samples and surface texture of quartz grains, and field survey. The following results were obtained : 1) Young Gwang sand dune is taking to pieces by human impact, and dose not move ahead the process of sand dune. 2) there was a turbulence of sand sediments outcrops saying to the cryoturbation that represents cold climatic environments, 3) Constituents of sand dune are mainly fine and very fine sand(2.5~4.5Φ) consisted by quartz and feldspar. Young Gwang sand grians have some analogy with different sites in west coast 4) In surface texture, roundness is thought to have been formed sub-angular, and some V cracks represented mechanical weathering environments. Especially, the dune environment has significant cultural and archaeological values arising from the occupation of human in the past. Those areas where occupation is known provide a valuable source of past records relating to human settlement.

The formation age and depositional environment of the marine terrace I of the estimated paleoshoreline altitude of 18m in Sanhari of Ulsan coast, southeastern Korea were investigated on the basis of examination of lithofacies and stratigraphy of terrace deposits. Marine deposits of the terrace is composed of rounded boulders(70cm in diameter) and rounded pebbles(1.0cm in diameter) which overlay them. The above rounded boulders which lie on the paleo-shore platform are considered to have been formed by wave abrasion in the same period that the paleo-shore platform was developed. The rounded pebbles which lie on the rounded boulder layer are considered to have been deposited in gravel beach and berm environment, judging from the laminae developed in this layer. The paleo-shore platform and marine rounded gravel layer of the terrace are assumed to have been formed in the large transgression period of the Last Interglacial culmination stage(MIS 5e), judging from the comparision of the formation age of 125ka B.P. of Juckcheon terrace I in the adjacent Pohang coast which was dated by amino acid dating. The terrestrial deposit of this terrace was largely composed of angular and subangular gravel mixed with marine rounded pebble which has been carried away mainly from the deposit of previous marine terraces and redeposited in this terrace. The lowest peat layer of terrastrial deposit was considered to have been deposited during the period from the late MIS 5e which is the estimated finishing time of deposition of the above marine gravels to the early stage of following regression period(MIS 5d) in which the sea level was still high. The sediments of angular and subangular gravel deposit which lie on this peat layer were assumed to have been deposited during the period from the early stage of the first regression period(MIS 5d) of the Last Interglacial to the Last Glacial. The lower part of the angular gravel layer is composed of the deposits of the fluvial and colluvial sediments, whereas most of the upper and middle part of the layer is mainly composed of angular gravels of colluvial sediments formed in the cold environment.

In this study, location evaluation of the natural environment of ports in the Joseon Dynasty was carried out to investigate the outport of east coast for the conquest of Usanguk. As a result of study, there were 55 ports and naval stations in the Joseon Dynasty, including the Yeongokpo, Aninpo, Samcheokpo, Susanpo, and Wolsongpo. As a result of the restoration work in the sea level that was done in the sixth century, the sea level at that time was about 1m higher than that at present. In terms of the location type, three types were identified via natural-environment analysis. Location type I consists of a total of 21 ports suitable for defense due to the sand spit in all the sides and because it is located in the bay of small and medium rivers. Location type II is composed of 22 ports close to the open seas, and location type III consists of a total of 12 ports centering on the bay. A total of nine ports satisfied the location factor in the shortest distance analysis(targeting location type I), 15 ports in the slope analysis, 13 ports in the hinterland analysis, 13 ports in the visibility analysis, and 11 ports in the ocean current analysis. It was found in the final evaluation that the I level regions consist of two ports(Obunjin and Mangyangjin). Obunjin has a location characteristic that is advantageous for defense and that makes it suitable to serve as an anchorage harbor for a large-scale fleet as its water level is deep and as it has a wide embayment. In conclusion, Obunjin is considered the outport that has the highest possibility of serving as Isabu's departure port for the conquest of Usanguk.

This study investigated the sedimentary environment changes in the Baramarae beach of Anmyeondo through spatio-temporal surface sediment analysis. In the winter season 2009, surface sediments were classified into 7 sedimentary facies such as gravel, sand, gravelly sand, gravelly muddy sand, muddy sand, silty sand, and sandy silt. Time-series analysis of average grain size from 2002 to 2009 revealed that the average grain size of sediments became finer and sorting was much worse. On the contrary, during the same period, the grain size became coarsening-trend and sorting was much better in beach area. These different grain size patterns resulted from the different change characteristics of beach and tidal flats. The southwestern beach area was connected to the open sea and thus fine sediments were removed by the environments with relatively high-energy. The sedimentation of fine sediments in the bay resulted from the tidal current action and the reduction of energy by the topographic effects. Fine sediments in the outer part of southwestern tidal flats could be explained such that the Seomot isle blocked ocean waves and as a result, low-energy environments accelerated sedimentations of fine sediments.

In this study, the shape of the Baramarae beach, Anmyeondo Area in West Coast of Korea and the changes in the sedimentation and erosion environment were analyzed in time series. As a result of the time series analysis of the shape of the Baramarae beach using aerial photographs from 1967 to 2009, the sand spit that developed in the southern part of Halmi Island was found to have had an EEN direction, but it was changed to a NNS direction, as reflected in the 2009 aerial photographs, as it gradually shifted to the west. In the onsite measurement, the H-3, H-4, H-5, and H-6 spots showed a superior sedimentation environment and the H-7, H-8, and H-9 spots showed a superior erosion environment. It was thus found that sedimentation is superior in the southwest beach and that erosion is superior in the northeast beach. The results in the spots between H-3 and H-6 indicate that the sand in the beach could not move to the northeast beach of Halmi Island due to the bank that had been established in the southwest beach of the island. On the other hand, it seems that superior erosion takes place in spots H-7 to H-9 in the northeast beach, where sand is not provided from the southwest beach of Halmi Island. It was found from the seasonal analysis that the season when superior sedimentation takes place in all the spots is autumn, and that the season when superior erosion takes place is summer. Superior sedimentation takes place in winter and spring in the southeast side and in summer in the northwest side.
