  • Geographical name is not only a spoken or written language that has been constructed as a linguistic element, but it is also a geographical phenomenon and a cultural element. Based upon this consciousness, the purpose of this paper is to examine current classification and management systems of the geographical names in Korea and to propose a new alternative classification and maintenance of the geographical names. In particular, the paper suggests three categories for the type classification of the geographical names: morpheme, linguistic change, and contestation types. In turn, this paper investigates the index of the geographical names contained in THE NATIONAL ATLAS OF KOREA (2007) on the basis of the preceding classification types in order to unveil the practical problems and limitations of the current classification articulated in the national atlas. This paper also proposes a new classification of the geographical naming that reflects the divisions of front and back morpheme of geographical names. Finally, from the discussions with the reinforcement of National Committee on Geographical Names, this paper invokes administrative and institutional protection and systematical management of the contesting and unofficial small scaled geographical names that have been set apart from the current geographical name standardization.

  • This study was investigated to the geographical categories and arrangement of library classifications and public organizations in ender to understand the geographical category comprehension and canon from the north-west to south-east in Korean library classification and then to develop a Korean geographical classification system Research method was the examination of different type of library classification (DDC, NDC, LCC) and geographical categorizations of the public organizations. The results show that there was not a principle of categorization and arrangement for geographical information. This study proposes to the three hierarchical structures and radial category arrangement from center-area to side area for developing Km geographical classification.

  • Map of geographical names can give us information for understanding of region because geographical name reflects regional perception of human. This study aimed to make an web-based map by constructing database of geographical names. Main contents carried out research on methods for classification of geographical names, database construction, and mapping on the website. Geographical name classified into four categories of the physical geography, culture and historical geography, economic geography, and the other and also, 18 sub-categories by classification criteria. Geographical name designed to input by collecting geographical names from paper-based maps and vernacular place names only known to the local region. Fields of database consisted of address, coordinates, geographical name(hangeul, hanja), classification, explanation, photographs. Map of geographical names can be represented with regional geographical information. The result of research is expected to offer information for distribution of geographical names as well as regional interpretation.

  • Rapid geographical classification of Bupleuri Radix is important in quality control. In this study, near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) combined with supervised pattern recognition was attempted to classify Bupleuri Radix according to geographical origins. Three supervised pattern recognitions methods, partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) and radial basis function support vector machine (RBF-SVM), were performed to establish the classification models. The QDA and RBF-SVM models were performed based on principal component analysis (PCA). The number of principal components (PCs) was optimized by cross-validation in the model. The results showed that the performance of the QDA model is the optimum among the three models. The optimized QDA model was obtained when 7 PCs were used; the classification rates of the QDA model in the training and test sets are 97.8% and 95.2% respectively. The overall results showed that NIRS combined with supervised pattern recognition could be applied to classify Bupleuri Radix according to geographical origin.

  • Objective of this research is to point out problems of geographic division structure in current Korean Decimal Classification System and provide solutions. For this purpose key classification methods were divided to decimal and non-decimal classification methods and analyzed for geographical division principles. In addition, national institutes regional division standards from Korea, USA and Japan were researched. Through these analysis, we provided suggestions to improve the table of geographical division in KDC4 including public institutions administrative district classification structure relations and consistency, and other regional divisional standards (proposal) instead of typical administrative district reflecting various geographical conditions.

  • Geographical classification of A. gigas was performed in the present study using UHPLC-DAD combined with multivariate data analysis techniques. Six active constituents were isolated from A. gigas; nodakenin, marmesin, decursinol, demethylsuberosin, decursin and decursinol angelate. One hundred sixty eight A. gigas samples were simultaneously determined using UHPLC-DAD. A principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to classify the samples according to geographical origins (Korea and China). The origins of A. gigas from Korea and China were correctly classified by 81.6% and 93.8% using PLS-DA Y prediction. This result demonstrates the potential use of UHPLC-DAD combined with multivariate analysis techniques as an accurate and rapid method to classify A. gigas according to their geographical origin.
