  • PBT (Plate Bearing Test) is a commonly used compaction estimation used to provide basal support for embankments. This study presents the results from experimental evaluations PBT, LWDT (Light Drop Weight Tester) test and Geogauge test with embankment materials which consist in sandy soil, crushed stone and rock. The results of this study indicate that the regression analyze results (r) from test results between Young's modulus and $k_{30}$, $E_v$ are 0.385 and 0.111~0.496, estimated very lack of correlation. The Geogauge is frequency vibration from machine to underground. Geogauge can not measure to accuracy test results when it is used on ground of the rock or crushed stone. The regression analyze results (r) from $E_v$ and Dynamic modulus are 0.502~0.847, different estimated by calculate method, as it were, when calculate $E_v$, least square method are appeared more accuracy than gradient of secant.

  • Quality assurance for embankment compaction is one of very important procedures to guarantee high quality construction. However, only sand replacement method (KS F2312) and static plate load test (KS F2310) which are conventional and tiresome methods are used to evaluate degree of compaction at construction fields. Recently, new types of devices such as the geogauge and the light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD), the soil impact hammer (CASPFOL) and dynamic cone penetration test etc. which are able to substitute for the conventional methods are begun to use to evaluate soil stiffness. In this study, a laboratory model test was performed to evaluate correlations among test results obtained from the new devices and to assess the potential use of them. All test results have correlations with relative density and water content. Especially, the coefficients of correlation between $E_G$ from the geogauge and $K_{30'}$ from the soil impact hammer and between $E_G$ from the geogauge and $E_{LFWD}$ from LFWD are more than 0.7 but those between the results from DCP and others are less than those between $E_{G{\cdot}}$ and $K_{30'}$ and $E_G$ and $E_{LFWD}$.

  • CMV(Compaction Meter Value) obtained from compaction results using an accelerometer, which measures the impact on the ground and the resilient force of the ground, is compared with the other degree of compaction through regression analysis. As a result, there is no correlation between results from conventional test methods (e.g., the plate load test and field density test) and the degree of compaction evaluated by either the Geogauge or the dyanamic cone penetrometer. To assess the possibility of replacing the conventional test methods with new test methods using CMV, several degrees of compaction tests were carried out. Those results show that the CMV obtained from compaction results using an accelerometer can be used as a substitute for conventional methods to evaluate the stiffness characteristics of compacted soil.

  • Although various fast and simple, testing devices have been developed in many countries such as the U.S, Japan, and European countries, these testing devices are not commonly used in Korea. In this study, compaction fur the field density test was carried out with a hand-guided vibrating roller. The results of the field density test were compared with those of the new testing devices such as the geogauge, soil impact hammer(CASPFOL), light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD), dynamic cone penetration(DCP). Regression analyses were conducted with the data from new testing devices. The analysis results showed that the correlation coefficients were high in the range of $70{\sim}95%$.

  • The objective of this paper is to assess the potential use of the geogauge and the light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) and the soil impact hammer as quality control/quality assurance $Q_C/Q_A$ devices for compacted soil layers. A comprehensive field experimental program considering variation of number of compaction, water contents and thickness of compaction layer was conducted on compacted layers of gravel sand. The geogauge, LFWD, the soil impact hammer and static load test (PLT) as a reference test were performed for the compacted layers. The geogauge elastic modulus, $E_G$, the LFWD dynamic modulus, ELFWD, empirical soil stiffness, $K_{30}$, obtained from soil impact hammer and soil stiffness directly obtained from PLT, $K_{30}$, were correlated with increasing number of compaction. The results of this study show that the geogauge, LFWD and the soil impact hammer, which are very simple to test, can be used as substituting devices for static PLT which is a conventional quality control/quality assurance $Q_C/Q_A$ devices for compacted soil layers.

  • The method of measuring ground deformation modulus, in situ-testing has the disadvantage where the exam number is limited because it needs counter weight and a lot of measurement times. Recently, it has supplemented this problem and the equipments by which measurement can be made quickly are developed and applied in field., That is Falling Weight Deflectometer(FWD), Light Drop Weight Tester(LDWT), Geogauge. Light Drop Weight Teste.(LDWT) is introduced firstly in the name of ‘a lightweight fall circuit tester for a railroad public corporation’ by KTX. Since KTX introduced LDWT, a number of research organizations have used LDWT to find out domestic standard for quality management of base ground. In this study we used ZFG 02 which was manufactured by Stendal in Germany and measured the dynamic deformation modulus in soil box and in-situ. And we analyzed the correlation of the dynamic deformation modulus with static deformation modulus based on plate test in the same ground.

  • In this study, we considered the development for degree of compaction for intelligent compaction. In practice, any direct or indirect method can be used as a intelligent compaction method. A series of field tests was conducted using an accelerometer. This is quick and simple indirect methods of measuring soil stiffness. Each result was compared with the results from a plate load test. A prototype device for intelligent compaction was developed, and we evaluated its performance.

  • The plate loading test(PLT) and the field density test are mainly used on the construction of embankments to control the compaction of a limited layer thickness. These two test methods are very time consuming and inefficient, but they are still commonly used as the methods of quality control for soil compaction. In the last 3 decades, many devices such as geogauge, light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD) and dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP) etc., have been introduced into the engineering market with the objective of acquiring in situ stiffness properties of the compacted soil layers. Recently, a new type of sensor, called compactometer, which in mounted on the drum of a roller and measures impact forces continuously with GPS, called as Continuous Compaction Control(CCC), has come into use in many countries such as America, Germany, Japan and so on. The main objective of this paper is to assess the potential use of these new devices as quality control and assurance devices for compacted soil layers. Based on this study, compactometer and the LFWD results werestrongly correlated with the result obtained from the PLT and the field density test.

  • The objective of this study is improve the technology by various testing devices for measuring degree of compaction. The methods for quality control for compaction are very various. But, normally the specifications have provided PBT(Plate Bearing Test) method when inspector tested quality control. In spite of the PBT has a few weak points to reduce process and cost. In order to improve quality control method, analyzed in-situ test results between PBT and other devices.(LWDT and Geogauge).

  • Continuous Compaction Control is a new cutting edge technique in United States, Japan and European construction market that uses an instrumented compactor to measure soil stiffness in real time usually with vehicle tracking system such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). In this study, soil stiffness was evaluated by adapting Fourier transforming technique with acceleration data obtained from accelerometers used as a continuous compaction control instrument. The soil stiffness obtained by accelerometers gave analogous results with reference results such as dry density, elastic modulus obtained from Geogauge and Light falling deflectometer.
