Determination of optimal unit commitment and load dispatch for thermal power system by DP method (DP법에 의한 화력계통의 최적병렬치수 결정 및 부하배분)

  • This paper describes the problem of the shortange-economic-scheduling for unit commitment and load dispatching in thermal power system. For economic operation of thermal system, the optimum time of startup and shoutdown of the generating unit must be determined so as to minimize the sum of generating and starting fuel cost over a given period. The above problems are analyzed for the purpose of the application of Dynamic Programing Method. Also the technique of Dynamic Programming is applied to the problems. For the illustative purpose, a case study was made on a model system composed of eight units and the computing time was about 190 seconds by IBM 360-40 system. Therefore, one can utilize this suggested method on any of the practical power systems.

  • This paper deals with a method for determining an optimal operation strategy of dispersed generating sources considering thermal merits. The optimal operation of these sources can be determined by the principle of equal incremental fuel cost. This paper presents an optimal operation strategy using the Kuhn-Tucker's optimal conditions and also an priority method to decide the optimal location of those sources in power systems. The validity of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated using a model system.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm which evaluates production cost and reliability indices under various constraints of the thermal generation system. In order to consider the operational constraints of thermal units effectively, the proposed algorithm is based on Monte Carlo techniques instead of analytical ones which have difficulty in modelling the units with additional constraints. At that point, generating units are modelled into two types, base load units and peaking units. These generating unit models are used in state duration sampling simulation for which approach can readily consider the peaking unit operating cycles and easily calculates frequency-duration indices. The proposed production simulation algorithm is applied to the IEEE Reliability Test System, and performs the production simulation under the given constraints. The results show that the proposed algorithm is accurate, reliable and useful.

  • In order to ensure that the prototype corresponds as closely as possible to the serial part subsequently to be manufactured, the materials used for the prototye should, wherever possible, be identical to those used in production. In case of metallic parts, however, this demand is still not completely fulfilled by the available Rapid Prototyping techniques. Since only conventional manufacturing processes caan currentlybe used to produce metallic prototypes directly, these are extremely cost and labor intensive. For this reason, work is being undertaken worldwide to develop Selective Laser Sintering (referred to SLS) and Laser Generating for direct manufacture of metallic parts. In this paper the results of both process developments are reported. As the present results show, they have great application potentials in prototyping tools, especially molds and dies.

Method for Generating Optimal Disassembly Sequence of End-of-Life Car′s Parts (폐자동차 부품의 최적 분리순서 생성을 위한 방법론)

  • In order to increase competitiveness and to gain economic benefit, companies ask more and more how to recycle their products in a efficient way. So far, to answer this question, companies are not sufficiently supported by suitable methods specially in the area of disassembly process planning. For this reason, we develop in collaboration with an industrial partner a new method for generating an optimal disassembly sequence. In the presented paper this method will be described in detail by considering the exiting assembly information, disassembly method and disassembly depth. PLM (Profit-Loss Margin) curve that is used to determine disassembly depth consists of profit value, disassembly cost and disassembly effect. Using assessment parameters, generated alternative disassembly sequences are evaluated and optimal disassembly sequence is proposed. This method is applied to generate the optimal disassembly sequence of Door Trim as an example.

  • Traditional maintenance planning is based on a constant maintenance interval for equipment life. In order to consider economic aspect for time based preventive maintenance, preventive maintenance is desirable to be scheduled by RCM(Reliability-Centered Maintenance) evaluation. The main objective of RCM is to reduce the maintenance cost, by focusing on the most important functions of the system and avoiding or removing maintenance actions that are not strictly necessary. So, Markov state model is utilized considering stochastic state in RCM. In this paper, a Markov state model which can be used for scheduling and optimization of maintenance is presented. The deterioration process of system condition is modeled by the stepwise Markov model in detail. Also, because the system is not continuously monitored, the inspection is considered. In case study, simulation results about RCM will be shown using the real historical data of combustion turbine generating unit in Korean power systems.

  • In the deregulated power market, suppliers, consumers and transmission companies try to maximize their profits by economical behaviors. In particular, generating companies like to sell more electricity for the revenue. Their situations will lead to various power system planning as optimal solutions for each supplier. In this paper, fundamental approaches of optimal power system planning under market positions of generating company are presented. The profit-maximizing approaches are modeled mathematically. By this analysis, each optimal planning is proved in risk of cost and monetary risk will be the economical signal for participants.

  • The micro grid considered in this paper consists of a diesel generator, a photovoltaic array, a wind turbine, a fuel cell, and a energy storage system. This paper explains and simulates the micro grid components in terms of accuracy and efficiency of having a system model based on the costs of fuel as well as operation and maintenance. For operational efficiency, the objective function in a diesel generator consists of the fuel cost function similar to the cost functions used for the conventional fossil-fuel generating plants. The wind turbine generator is modeled by the characteristics of variable output. The optimization is aimed at minimizing the cost function of the system while constraining it to meet the customer demand and safety of micro grid. The operating cost in fuel-cell system includes the fuel costs and the efficiency for fuel to generate electric power. To develop the overall system model gives a possibility to minimize of the total cost of micro grid. The application of optimal operation can save the interruption costs as well as the operating costs, and improve reliability index in micro grid.

  • The small-sized wind turbine generating system with the output power less than 10kW, which can be installed in some areas of hills, parks, and cities due to its flexibility, is one of the progressive research and development fields in renewable energy. It is important for the small wind turbine generators to have low cost, high reliability as well as high efficiency. To meet these requirements, development of various maximum-power-point-tracking (MPPT) control schemes should be required. Generally, the output of the controller can be connected to a 48V battery to supply power to a DC load. In this work, the design and implementation of an FPGA-based MPPT controller for small-sized wind turbine generating system is presented. For the verification of the practical performance of various MPPT algorithms, CRIO controller from NI has been used.

  • The purpose of this study is to make an economic analysis of power plant utilities by examining electricity generating costs with environmental consideration. Economic growth has caused pollutant emission, and subsequent environmental pollution has been identified as a very real limit to sustainable development. Considering the enormous role of electricity in the national economy, it is thus very important to study the effect of environmental regulations on the electricity sector. Because power utilities need large investments during construction, operation and maintenance, and also require much construction lead time. Economic analysis is the very important process in the electric system expansion planning. In this study, the levelized generation cost method is used in comparing economic analysis of power plant utilities. Among the pollutants discharged of the electricity sector, this study principally deals with the control activities related only to $CO_2$, and $NO_2$, since the control cost of $SO_2$, and TSP (Total Suspended Particulates) is already included in the construction cost of utilities. The cost of electricity generation in a coal-fired power plant is compared with one in an LNG combined cycle power plant. Moreover this study surveys the sensitivity of fuel price, interest rate and carbon tax. In each case, this sensitivity can help to decide which utility is economically justified in the circumstance of environmental regulations.
