In recent years, world is faced with a transportation energy dilemma, and the transportation is dependent on a single fuel - petroleum. However, Hybrid Electric Vehicle(HEV) technology holds more advantages to reduce the demand for petroleum in the transportation by efficiency improvements of petroleum consumption. Therefore, there is a trend that lower gear noise levels are demanded in HEV for drivers to avoid annoyance and fatigue during operation. And meshing transmission error(T.E.) is the excitation that leads to the tonal noise known as gear whine, and radiated gear whine is also the dominant source of noise in the whole gearbox. This paper presents a method for the analysis of gear tooth profile and lead modification, and the predictions of transmission error and load distribution are shown under one loaded torque for the 1st gear pair of HEV gearbox. The test is also obtained before tooth micro-modification under the torque. At last, the appropriate tooth modification is used to minimize the transmission error and load distribution under the loaded torque. It is a good approach which the simulated result is used to improve the design in order to minimize the radiation gear whine noise.

In the development of a vibration-based condition monitoring system in gearbox, one of the most important research topics is a quantitative analysis and test of the effect of gear damage on vibration of gearbox. This paper presents the evaluation result of vibration condition indicator according to the gear tooth damage through the vibration test of gearbox. The dynamic load test was performed with high speed railway (KTX)'s gearbox. The vibration of gearbox was measured according to a rotational speed change with the common gear fault modes, such as pitting and tooth breakage. The characteristics and the possibility of applying of vibration condition indicator on condition monitoring system were analyzed. As a result, the value of most condition indicator is gradually increased with the severity of gear faults. The NA6 indicator shows a low variation with the rotational speed change and high sensitivity in accordance with the gear fault.

This paper describes a computer aided design system for spur and helical gears. To establish the appropriate program, an integrate approach based on a rule-base system was adopted. This system is implemented on the personal computer and its environment is a commercial CAD package called AutoCAD. This system includes a main program and five sub-modules such as data input module, tooth profile drawing module, strength calculation module, and drawing edit module. In the main program, all the sub-modules are loaded and the type of gear and tooth profile are selected. In the data input module, the variables which are necessary to the design of gear are selected from the database. In the drawing module, from the calculated results, the required gear tooth is produced on the screen. The developed system that aids gear designer provides powerful capabilities for gear design.

In order for Hypoid gear development. Gears are required to sustain heavy loads or on applications where the gear box is made or a material with a different coefficient of thermal expansion form that or the gears and shafts, it is desirable to make a deflection and contact check under load. The deflection test is performed in the actual gear mounting using completely processed gear. This test should cover the full operating range of gear loads from no load to peak load. Under peak load the contact pattern should extend to the tooth boundaries without showing a concentration of the contact pattern at any point on the tooth surface.

Gear vibration is caused by the mesh stiffness, gear accuracy, and assembling errors. For these reasons, helical gear has the azial, radial, and rotational vibrations. In this study, the mesh stiffness is calculated by considering the tooth bending, contact, and foundation deformations. Rotational vibration of helical gear with tooth error is modeled by the nonlidear equation of motion with single degree of freedom and is anlyzed numerically. Also, by a specially designed experimental set-up, the analysis are cross-checked and the vibration characteristics of helical gear are discussed.

The Vibration signals of a gear driving system is often associated with gear tooth faults. Many studies have been done on the detection of impulsive vibration signals, which characterize the breaka ge of a gear tooth. Also, most of the studies on gear fault diagnosis are only about the fault existence at one gear-pair. This study concerns on the several possible faults of a geared motor that has three gear pairs. The measurement and analysis on the vibration signals of a running geared motor shows the relationship between the gear faults and the vibration signals. This study also shows that adaptive interference canceling technique can be appropriately applicable to detect which gear-pair has the fault, and that wavelet is better than spectrogram to figure out the gear fault.
A retarder, as a supplementary brake system that is not friction-based, is frequently used in heavy-duty vehicles generally to slow the vehicles down on inclines. The electric retarder mainly used in a heavy-duty bus is generally placed between the transmission and the axle. The rotor inside the retarder system is attached to the axle. The operation of the retarder within a driven vehicle generates reverse torque due to coast driving force on hypoid gears in the differential gear system. By the reverse torque, scoring or scuffing on the hypoid gear teeth may directly occur. The scoring may be generated due to excessive contact stresses on the tooth surface. In this study, tooth contact stresses and contact patterns were analysed in order to investigate on the tooth scoring phenomenon using a finite element analysis program T900 in which the Hertzian contact stress formula was taken. Backlash, wear and surface finish were considered in the finite element simulation on the scoring.

In the paper, it was attempted to verify how the strength around fillet area of shifted gear would be affected by variables such as number of teeth, shifted value, and diametral pitch. Thereafter, the Lewis' tooth factor of the shifted gear was computed in terms of previously mentioned variables in order to observe the characteristics of stress change related from tooth factor and tooth number with the parameter of shifted values and diametral pitches. From the results of quasi-theoretical values by Finite Element Method(F.E.M.)and experimental values through the photo-elastic tests, the followings were identified. The more the number of gear teeth increased, the more the profile of the tooth became close to that of rack, and accordingly the stresses in the fillet area decreased significantly in certain range. Furthermore, as the shifted value and pressure angle increase the stresses tend decrease. Moreover, the stresses analyzed by F.E.M. in the filled area became around 1.22 times larger than the stresses computed by Lewis' form factor, and this is supposed as on influence of the stress concentration in fillet area.

This study was to develop a simulation model of a compound planetary gear reducer for the final driving shaft using a gear analysis software (KISSsoft, Version 2017, KISSsoft AG, Switzerland). The aim of this study is to analyze transmission error and the tooth load distribution through micro-geometry using the simulation model. The tip and root relief were modified with Micro-geometry in the profile direction, and crowning was modified with Micro-geometry in the lead direction. The transmission error was analyzed using the PPTE (Peak to Peak Transmission Error) value, and the tooth load distribution was analyzed for the concentrated stress on the tooth surface. As a result of modifying tip and relief in the profile direction, the transmission error was reduced up to 40.7%. In the case of modifying crowning in the lead direction, the tooth load was more evenly distributed than before and decreased the stress on the tooth surface. After modifying the profile direction for the 1st and 2nd planetary gear train, the bending and contact safety factors were increased by 31.7% and 17%, and 18.3% and 12.5% respectively. Moreover, the bending and safety factors after modifying lead direction were increased by 59.5% and 32.7%, respectively for the 1st planetary gear train, and 59.6% and 43.6%, respectively for the 2nd planetary gear train. In future studies, the optimal design of a compound planetary gear reducer for the final driving shaft is needed considering both the transmission error and tooth load distribution.
