  • Rare earth-doped ceria powders with a composition of Ce0.8R0.2O1.9(R=Yb, Y, Gd, Sm, Nd and La) were prepared by heating the oxalate coprecipitate. The green compacts began to shrink at 600$^{\circ}$-700$^{\circ}C$. The relative density after the sintering at 1200$^{\circ}$ and 1400$^{\circ}C$ became higher for the higher green density. The samples were densified above 98% relative density by the sintering ant 1600$^{\circ}C$ for 4 h and the grain sizes (4.7-7.6$\mu\textrm{m}$) showed a tendency to become larger with increasing ionic radius of doped-rare earth element. In the intial stag of sintering at 700$^{\circ}$-800$^{\circ}C$, the dominant mass transport process changed from lattice diffusion to grain boundary diffusion to grain boundary diffusion with heating time. The porosity during the intermediated and final stage of the sintering at 1200$^{\circ}$ and 1400$^{\circ}C$ decreased by the mass transport through lattice diffusion with grain growth.

  • $Gd_2O_3$-doped $CeO_2$(GDC) solid solutions have been considered as a promising materials for electrolytes in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. In this study, the nano-sized GDC powder with average panicle size of 69nm was prepared by a high energy ball milling process and its sintering behavior was investigated. Heat-treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$ of nano-sized GDC powder mixture led to GDC solid-solution. The enhanced densification over 96% of relative density was obtained after sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2h. It was found that the sinterability of GDC powder could be significantly improved by the introduction of a high energy ball milling process.

  • The electrical properties of nanostructured Gd-doped $CeO_2$ (n-GDC) as a function of temperature and water partial-pressure were investigated using ac and dc measurements. For n-GDC, protonic conductivity prevails under wet condition and at low temperatures (< $200^{\circ}C$), while oxygen ionic conductivity occurs at high temperatures (> $200^{\circ}C$) under both dry and wet conditions. The grain boundaries in n-GDC were highly selective, being conductive for protonic transport but resistive for oxygen ionic transport. The protonic conductivity reaches about $4{\times}10^{-7}S/cm$ at room temperature (RT).

  • $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3-\delta}$ as air electrode for soild oxide fuel cell was synthesized by a citrate process and its cathodic polarization was determinated by the current interruption method on the Gd-doped ceria as electrolyte. The addition of citric acid increased the exothermic heat for the formation of $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3-\delta}$ perovskite oxide. The degree of the initial particle agglomeration was affected by the exothermic heat. Also the increase of cal-cination temperature enlarged the particle size and the higher sintering temperature accelerated the den-sification of $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3-\delta}$ layer after its being painted on $Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ electrolyte. In this study $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3-\delta}$ synthesized by citrate process of which the molar ratio of citric acid to metal nitrate was 2 calcined at $650^{\circ}C$ for 2hr and sintered at 1100 at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs after slurry coating on Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 electrlyte showed the lowest cathodic polarization.

  • The densification behavior and electrical conductivity of $Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ ceramics were investigated with the strontium gallate concentration ranging from 0 to $5\;mol\%$. Both the sintered density and grain size were found to increase rapidly up to $0.5\;mol\%$ $Sr_2Ga_2O_5$, and then to decrease with further addition. Dense $Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ ceramics with $97\%$ of the theoretical density could be obtained for $0.5\;mol\%$ $Sr_2Ga_2O_5$-added specimen sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 5 h, whereas pure $Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ ceramics needed to be sintered at $1550^{\circ}C$ in order to obtain an equivalent theoretical density, Electrical conductivity was measured as a function of dopant content, over the temperature range of $350\;-\;600^{\circ}C$ in air. Total conductivity of $0.5\;mol\%$ $Sr_2Ga_2O_5$-added specimen showed the maximum conductivity of $2.37{\times}10^{-2}{{\Omega}-1}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ at $500^{\circ}C$, The addition of strontium gallate was found to promote the sintering properties and electrical conductivities of $Gd_2O_3$-doped $CeO_2$.

  • Scandia ($Sc2O_3$)-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) electrolyte-supported symmetrical solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOECs), in which lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF)-gadolinia ($Gd_2O_3$)-doped ceria (GDC) composite materials are used as both the cathode and anode, were fabricated and their high temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) performance was investigated. Current density-voltage curves were obtained for cells operated in 10% $H_2O$/90% Ar at 750, 800, and $850^{\circ}C$. It was possible to determine the ohmic, cathodic, and anodic contributions to the total overpotential using the three-electrode technique. The HTSE performance was significantly improved in the symmetrical cell with LSCF-GDC electrodes compared to the cell consisting of an Ni-YSZ cathode and LSCF-GDC anode. It was found that the overpotential due to the LSCF-GDC cathode largely decreased and, at a given current density, the total cell voltage decreased, which resulted in the enhanced hydrogen production rate in the symmetrical cell.

  • The sintering behavior and electrical property of $Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ ceramics were investigated with the iron oxide concentration ranging from 0 to 5 mol%. Both the sintered density and grain size were found to increase up to 2 mol% $Fe_2O_3$, and then to decrease with further additions. At a higher $Fe_2O_3$ content above 3 mol%, grain size decreased by a pinning effect induced by different shape grains. The electrical conductivity was also increased with increasing $Fe_2O_3$ content up to 2 mol%. Total conductivity of 2 mol% $Fe_2O_3-added$ specimen showed the maximum conductivity of $2{\times}10^{-2}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ at $500^{\circ}C$. The addition of $Fe_2O_3$ was found to promote the sintering properties and electrical conductivities of $Gd_2O_3-dope\;CeO_2$.

  • In this study, microstructure and electrical conductivity of {(G $d_2$ $O_3$)$_{0.75}$( $Y_2$ $O_3$)$_{0.25}$}$_{x}$ (Ce $O_2$)$_{1-x}$ (0.01$\leq$x$\leq$0.25) was investigated as a function of composition x. GYO addition(x) increased the bulk density and G $d_2$ $O_3$ was found to be monoclinic at x>0.15. From the change of the lattice parameter with the addition(x), GYO solution limit for ceria was exceeded in the range of x=0.05 to 0.09. Thermal expansion coefficient(15~17$\times$10$^{-6}$ $^{\circ}C$) of GYC samples at x=0.01 to 0.07 was higher in value than that of 8YSZ(10.8$\times$10$^{-6}$ $^{\circ}C$). The electrical conductivity of GYC samples at x=0.05 showed the maximum(0.01S/cm) in value at 1073K which was 2 times higher than that of 8YSZ. The activation energy for the electrical conduction was determined to be 0.60eV in the temperature range of 1073K.3K..3K.

  • Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a promising carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology whose efficiency and cost primarily relies on the oxygen carrier materials used. In this paper, gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC, Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95) was added as a promoter to improve the oxygen transfer rate of MgMnO3-δ oxygen carrier materials. Increasing GDC content significantly increased the oxygen transfer rate of MgMnO3-δ-GDC composites for the reduction reaction due to an increase in the surface adsorption of CH4 via oxygen vacancies formed on the surface of the GDC. On the other hand, the oxygen transfer rate for the oxidation reaction decreased linearly with increasing GDC content due to the oxygen storage ability of GDC. Adsorbed oxygen molecules preferentially insert themselves into oxygen vacancies of the GDC lattice rather than reacting with (Mg,Mn)O to form MgMnO3-δ during the oxidation reaction.

  • It has been considered to apply GDC ($Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{1-X}$) for low-temperature SOFC electrolytes because it has higher ionic conductivity than YSZ at low temperature. However, open circuit voltage with using GDC ($Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{1-X}$) electrolyte in SOFCs, becomes lower than using YSZ (8 mol% Yttria stabilized Zirconia) electrolyte because GDC has electronic conductivity. In this work, the effect of changing GDC electrolyte thickness on the open circuit voltage has been investigated. Ni-GDC anode-supported unit cells were fabricated as follows. Mixed NiO-GDC powders were pressed and pre-sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$. And then, GDC electrolyte material was dip-coated on the anode and sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$. Finally the LSCF-GDC cathode material was screen-printed on the electrolyte and sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$. Electrolyte thickness was controlled by the number of dip-coating times. Open circuit voltage was measured depending on electrolyte thickness at $650^{\circ}C$ and found that the thicker GDC electrolyte was, the better OCV was.
