An Analysis of Thermal Stress and Angular Distortion in Bead-on-Plate Welding Incorporating Constrained Boundary Conditions (판재의 비드 용접에서 구속경계조건을 적용한 열응력 및 각변형 해석)

  • There have been many studies on the two dimensional thermo-elasto-plastic analysis in welding process, mostly from viewpoint of residual stresses. In this study, the temperature distribution, transient thermal stress, and angular distortion during bead-on-plate gas metal arc welding of rectangular plates were analyzed by using the finite element method. A nonlinear heat transfer analysis was first performed by taking account of the temperature-dependent material properties and convection heat losses on the surface. This was followed by a thermo-elasto-plastic stresses and distortion analysis that incorporates the constrained boundary condition of the two dimensional solution domain to get the three dimensional size effect of the plate. The constrained boundary conditions adopted in this study were the constant displacement condition over the whole two dimensional section for axial movement in the welding direction, and the force boundary condition for rotational movementof the domain around the axis of the welding direction. It could be revealed that the theoretical predictions of the angular distortion have an improved agreement with the experimentally obtained data presented in the previous study.

  • This paper presents the shape optimization of a nonaxisymmetric endwall and endwall boundary layer fence which improve the aerothermal environment of a gas turbine passage. The endwall and fence methods were used simultaneously. The turbine passage was simulated by a $90^{\circ}$ turning duct ($Re_D$=360,000). The main purpose of the present investigation was to focus on finding a nonaxisymmetric endwall and boundary layer fence with minimum total pressure loss in the passage and heat transfer coefficient on the endwall of the duct. An approximate optimization method was used for the investigation to secure the computational efficiency. Results indicated that a significant improvement in aerothermal environment can be achieved through the application of a nonaxisymmetric endwall and boundary layer fence.

  • Numerical simulation was carried out for a propane fire of mass transfer rate 3g/m^2-s$ on a 1m high vertical wall. The objectives of this study are to confirm the outcomes of evaluation of the simulator through simulation of natural convection, and to compare the results of the wall fire with those of previous studies. It was confirmed that the simulated boundary layer was laminar at C_s=0.2$ while it was turbulent at C_s=0.1$. The z direction velocity showed lack of turbulent mixing as seen in the natural convection case, and the profiles of temperature and velocities were in relatively good agreement with those of experiment and previous simulation. It was found that the air entrainment into the boundary layer was well predicted.

A Study on Hot Ductility Behavior of Ni-based Superalloys (니켈기 초내열합금의 고온연성거동에 관한 연구)

  • Plasma transferred arc welding (PTAW) has been taken into consideration for repairing Ni-based superalloy components used gas turbine blades. Various cracks has been generally reported to be found in the base metal heat affected zone(HAZ) along grain boundary. Thus, hot cracking susceptibility of Ni-based superalloys was evaluated according to heat treatments. Hot ductility test was conducted on specimens with solution treated at 112$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and aging treated at 845$^{\circ}C$ for 24hours after solution treatment. The results of the hot ductility test appeared that solution treated specimens were the highest ductility recovery rate among three conditions. The loss of ductility at high temperature in Ni-based superalloy was mainly controlled by the degree of pain boundary wetting due to constitutional liquation of MC carbide precipitates. Meanwhile, the highest ductility recovery rate in solution-treated alloys seems to be lack of M23C6, which can be dissolved during heating and then result in the local enrichment of Cr in the vicinity of the grain boundary.

  • Jet vane is an useful component which is installed at the end of a nozzle for the purpose of the posture control and the secure controlling stability during the initial launching of a rocket. During several seconds from its initial launching moment, the JV driving part is heated due to the direct contact of the vane with the combusted gas and the vane is ablated mechanically or chemically. In this study, as the fundamental study for the thermal analysis of jet vane, the heat transfer into a jet vane which is located in the uniform supersonic flow field is calculated. For this, boundary layer integral method and finite difference method are used simultaneously. Based on the thermal boundary conditions derived from the analysis, the transient heat conduction in the vane is also calculated.

  • The growth of the critical size bubble by diffusion process in viscoelastic medium was treated by an integral method for the concentration boundary layer adjacent to the bubble wall. In this study, we obtained a set of the first order time dependent equations to obtain bubble radius and gas pressure inside the bubble simultaneously. The calculated final cell sizes depending on the initial saturation pressure are in close agreement with the observed ones. The governing equations developed in this study may be used in polymer processing of microcellular foams.

  • The microstructure and dielectric properties of a SrTiO3-based GBL (Grain Boundary Layer) capacitor were investigated. The 0.6 mol% Nb2O5 doped SrTiO3 was sintered for 3 hr at 1450$^{\circ}C$ in mixed gas(N2/H2) atmosphere. The Nb2O5 promoted the grain growth of the SrTiO3 ceramics was decreased with the amount of Nb2O5. The oxide mixture(PbO, Bi2O3, B2O3) were painted on the reduced specimen and fired at 1000$^{\circ}C$ to 1100$^{\circ}C$ in air. The penetrated oxide mixture into specimen were located in grain boundaries. A SrTiO3-based GBL capacitor had the apparent permittivity of about 3.0${\times}$104, the dielectric loss of 0.01-0.02, and insulating resistance of 108-109$\Omega$.cm. The capacitor had the stable temperature coefficient of capacitance and exhibited dielectric dispersion over 107 Hz. The capacitance-voltage measurements indicated that the grain boundary was composed of the continuous insulating layers.

  • In this paper, the microstructure and the dielectric properties of the Sr$_{1-x}$ Ca$_{x}$TiO$_3$(0$\leq$$\chi$$\leq$0.2) -based grain boundary layer ceramics were investigated. The specimens were sintered from 142$0^{\circ}C$ to 152$0^{\circ}C$ for 4hr. in $N_2$ gas. The 2nd phase formed by thermal diffusing from the surface lead to a very high apparent dielectric constant, $\varepsilon$$_{r}$>50000. The structural properties of the specimens were studied by X-ray diffraction and SEM, EDX. All specimens exhibited cubic structure. Increasing content of Ca, the peak intensity were decreased.ed.d.

  • In this paper, the $Sr_{1-x}Ca_{x}TiO_{3}(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.2)$ 2)-based grain boundary layer ceramics were fabricated to measured dielectric properties and voltage-current properties. The sintering temperature and time were $1420\sim1520^{\circ}C$, 4hours, in $N_{2}$ gas, respectively. The structural and the dielectric properties were investigated by SEM, X-ray, HP4194A and K6517. The 2nd phase formed by thermal diffusion from the surface lead to a very high apparent dielectric constant, $\varepsilon_r$ > 50000.   • In a MEMS(micro-electro mechanical system), the fluid may slip near the surface of a solid and have a discontinuous temperature profile. A numerical prediction in this slip flow region can provide a reasonable guide for the design and fabrication of micro devices. The compressible Navier-Stokes equation with Maxwell/smoluchowski boundary condition is solved for two simple systems; couette flow and pressure driven flow in a long channel. We found that the couette flow could be regarded as an incompressible system in low speed regions. For the pressure driven flow system, we observed nonlinear distribution of pressure in the long channel and numerical results showed a good agreement with the experimental results.
