  • Highly ordered porous materials having mesopores in the walls of macropores showed improved adsorption dynamics results for VOC molecules, especially bulky molecules. These meso/macroporous mataerials were synthesized by the dual templating method, and mesopore and macropore size were controlled by adjusting the templates for each pore size regime. In the case of adsorption and desorption of small VOC molecules (toluene), although meso/macroporous MCM-41 with smaller mesopore size showed improved results, meso/macroporous SBA-15 with larger mesopore size was not improved regardless of the existence of macropores, since there was no limitation of movement through the larger mesopore. However, the adsorption dynamics of bulky VOC molecules (p-xylene) over meso/macroporous SBA-15 were drastically improved by increasing the macropore size.

  • The performance of five kind adsorbents, which can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the diesel engine occupying 85% of the fishing boat, was carried out and the emission reduction filter was manufactured and evaluated in the adsorption efficiency of the emission gas for 240 KW diesel portable generator. As a NOx emission filter made of mordenite which has an excellent cation exchange capacity was manufactured by ball type adsorbents having excellent specific surface area. The adsorption efficiency of mordenite material applying the emission reduction filter began to show up at the operating time 10 minutes in comparison with the activated carbon and zeolite materials, and it was exposed to continue until 100% capability with passing by 20 minutes. So the adsorption efficiency of the NOx reduction filter consistently maintained at the averaged 80%.

  • This study evaluated the availability as an alternative adsorbent which is cheaper and more efficient than CuO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ which have been studing vigorously to remove $SO_2$. Five adsorbents (CuO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$, Iron ore, Slag, LD slag, $Fe_2O_3$) was employed in a fixed bed reactor. $SO_2$ breakthrough curves were obtained as a function of temperature, initial gas velocity and particle size. Saturation capacities calculated by the numerical integration of breakthrough curves of $SO_2$ increased with increasing reaction temperature. $SO_2$ breakthrough curve equation of $Fe_2O_3$ for this system can be expressed as Kr=3,914,000 exp(-37,329.86/RT). By means of the breakthrough curve, the influence of bed height on breakthrough time was also estimated.

  • To understand the human exposure levels of volatile halogenated hydrocar-bons in ambient air, a new rapid and convenient analytical method for determination of the compounds in gaseous phase was evaluated and established. The method is based upon passsive diffusion to personal sampler containing adsorbent and solvent extraction followed by purge trap/ on-column cryof-ocusing method. A new method needs no special instrumentation for gas collection because it is based upon the passive diffusion principle. The typical chromatogram obtained in this study proved that rapid and simultaneous determination of target analytes was possible with good resolution. The developed method was successfully applied to determine the volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in indoor air and the values obtained by this new method were compared with those by direct suction method. The concentration of carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,2-trichloroethylene, chloroform showed the values below 400$\mug/m^3$ except the maximum of 1,513$\mug/m^3$ of chloroform. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane showed approximately 1,000 to 5,000$\mug/m^3$ range of diurnal fluctuation in indoor air.

  • Petroleum a vital commodity affecting every aspect of 21st century. Toxicity and adverse effects of sulphur as catalyst in petroleum products is of great concern required development of techniques for desulphurization in compliance with the International standards. Installation of desulphurizing units costs over $200 million per unit placing economic burden on developing countries like Pakistan. Present study analysis of commercial fuels (station petrol and jet fuel JP8) on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified sulphur concentration of 19.94 mg/L and 21.75 mg/L, respectively. This scenario urged the researcher to attempt synthesis of material that is likely to offer good adsorption capacity for sulphur. Following protocol of sol-gel method, transition metals (Ni, Cu, Zn) solution is gelated with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS; silica precursor) using glycerol. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra revealed bonding of Zn-O, Cu-O, and Ni-O by stretching vibrations at $468cm^{-1}$, $617cm^{-1}$, and $468cm^{-1}$, respectively. Thiophene and Benzothiophene mixed in n-heptane and benzene (4:1) for preparation of Model Fuels I and II, respectively. Each of silica based metal was applied as adsorbent in batch mode to assess the removal efficiency. Results demonstrated optimal desulphurization of more than 90% following efficacy order as Si-Ni > Si-Zn > Si-Cu based adsorbents. Proposed multilayered (Freundlich) adsorption mechanism follows ${\pi}$-complexation with pseudo secnd order kinetics.

  • As the damage to fine dust increased, the Republic of Korea designated fine dust as a social disaster. The composition of the fine dust is composed of carbon, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium and minerals. The cause of fine dust is naturally generated by dirt, pollen, etc. In addition, there are artificial causes such as gaseous vehicle exhaust gas emitted from the use of fossil fuel. When fine dust enters the human body through breathing, it causes various respiratory diseases and skin diseases. In IARC, fine dust was designated as a carcinogen group 1. In this research, we tried to adsorb fine dust by physical adsorption using powdered activate carbon. Powdered activate carbon is a powdered activated carbon activated in a carbonized state. Porous material with high specific surface area and low density. Experimental items were tested for density, water absorption, and fine dust concentration according to the PAC addition ratio. Basic experiments were carried out to fabricate the fine dust adsorption matrix.

  • Breakthrough analysis has widely been explored for the dynamic separation of gaseous mixtures in porous materials. In general, breakthrough experiments measure the components of a flowing gas when a gaseous mixture is injected into a column filled with an adsorbent material. In this paper, we report on the design and fabrication of a breakthrough curve measurement device to study the dynamic adsorptive separation of hydrogen isotopologues in porous materials. Using the designed system, an experiment was conducted involving a 1:1 mixture of hydrogen and deuterium passed through a column filled with zeolite 13X (1 g). At room temperature, both hydrogen and deuterium were adsorbed in negligible amounts; however, at a temperature of 77 K, deuterium was preferentially adsorbed over hydrogen. The selectivity was different from that in the existing literature due to the different sample shapes, measurement methods, and column structures, but was at a similar level to that of cryogenic distillation (1.5).

  • X-type Zeolite for the gas separation was prepared by hydrothermal methods and the zeolite was ion-exchanged with KCl, $CaCl_2$, $YCl_3$ and $InCl_3$ in order to investigate the effect of ions on the properties of molecular sieves. Adsorption isotherms of $CO_2$ on ion exchanged X-type zeolites and those of $O_2$ and $N_2$ on the synthesized zeolite were measured at $25^{\circ}C$ using a volumetric method and the adsorption characteristics were compared with each other. Model parameters for the Langmuir, Freundlich and Toth equations were regressed for the measured adsorption isotherms. In order to confirm the applicability of the zeolite on $CO_2-PSA$ processes, breakthrough tests and process simulation were undertaken. It was found that the X-type zeolite could be a potential adsorbent in recovering $CO_2$ from flue gas.

  • In order to separate of carbon dioxide in the combustion exhaust gas, monoethanolamine (MEA) and piperazine (PZ) impregnated zeolite 13X adsorbents were used. A series of adsorbents were synthesized by impregnating 30, 50 and 70 wt% of MEA and PZ respectively on zeolite 13X pellet. XRD, FT-IR and BET were used to characterize the properties of impregnated pelletized zeolite 13X absorbents. In order to investigate the separation characteristics of carbon dioxide, zeolite pellet, MEA impregnated zeolite and PZ impregnated zeolite pellet were investigated at 25, 50 and $75^{\circ}C$. Amine impregnated pelletized zeolite absorbent has shown that adsorption decreases with increasing temperature. Finally, the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity when emission temperature of the combustion exhaust gas, PZ impregnated zeolite pellet was 1.8 times than zeolite pellet as well as 20 times than MEA impregnated zeolite pellet.
