  • Today many people are greatly interested in the environment. Especially increasing affluent of food causes a great amount of food waste. To handle this effectively, we now have a lot of problems of disposing garbage all over the world. In Korea, in order to reduce this garbage, we should use a standard plastic garbage bag in which we have to throw away our garbage. So it has an effect on significantly reducing the waste amount every year. Now, there are a lot of cases that residents again use a standard plastic garbage bag. The purpose of this study is to propose algorithm preventing the re-cycling of a standard plastic garbage bag.

In Korea, in order to reduce this garbage, we should use a standard plastic garbage bag in which we have to throw away our garbage. So it has an effect on significantly reducing the waste amount every year. Now, there are a lot of cases that residents use several times a standard plastic garbage bag. The purpose of this study is to develop the recognition device preventing the re-cycling of a standard plastic garbage bag. As a result, we obtain 1% error rate.

  • To suggest the separate collection system of garbage in household, people's disposition was evaluated. It was indicated that garbage be collected daily to minimize the odor which was major nuisance from garbage. However, most people wanted to discharge garbage in two or three days interval, as they did not prefer frequent handling. So, proper size of garbage container was determined as two to three days capacity. In contrast with it, it was major opinion that dicharged garbage should be collected everyday by local government to eliminate the outdoor pollution. Plastic bag was the most popular container, as it could be used instantly. Price of the bag affected on the efficiency of reduction and separate collection of garbage. Low price increased the separate collection and decreased the reduction, while high price introduced the opposite result. So, the dual price system was suggested to enhance both objectives.

  • This Design research is a design of rescue equipment combined with beach garbage can for prompt rescue at the time of the accident in water. As a usual, it is used as garbage can hanging a garbage bag on the holders located in both sides, and it can be used to rescue drowning men promptly taking out a rescue tube located inside of the equipment at the time of the accident in water. Support is consisted of beach one, wall-hanging one and pipe one, and it could be installed to match the situation because it can be combined with all main frames. As a usual, it is used as garbage can in seaside, but it can be used to rescue drowning men promptly taking out a rescue tube after pulling the handle located in front of main frame at the time of the accident in water, and it can be used to pull drowning men out of the water because rope is kept in rescue tube.

  • The enforcement of volume-rate disposal system which has been resulted in reducing the household waste and increasing the amount of recycled contents is showing positive effects that are generating social and economic benefits, However due to the lack of user's perception about how to separate and dispose of recycling wastes, some problems are constantly raised, like food waste is disposed in the standard volume-rate garbage bag. By rearranging visual information printed on standard plastic garbage bags (SPGB), this study attempted to find ways to deliver the information regarding how to use them properly. In order to achieve this, from the perspective of visual information design, the study examined the cases of visual information printed on nine SPGB from domestic and overseas. Among these, this study conducted a survey on user's awareness of visual information printed on SPGB in three districts of Seoul, Korea. As a result, user-preferred items were identified. Based on the result, this study selected information to be printed on SPGB, established the hierarchical order of the selected information, and proposed a guideline for using SPGB with informative graphics; therefore, the effectiveness of information delivery was improved. In addition, this study also examined the external validity of the guideline by comparing a survey on user's awareness.

A Study on the Rural Waste Problem and Resolution (농촌쓰레기 관리실태와 해결 방안 연구)

  • Waste policy instruments such as garbage bag-fee system and recycling policy initiated in 1995 have contributed to the reduction of solid waste generation. Rural areas now produce less amount of solid wastes in terms of per capital than urban areas and as compare to a decade ago. However, most policy efforts since the early 1990s related to waste issue have been concentrated in urban areas. Waste problems in rural areas are not the amount itself, but the specific characteristics which are unique in rural regions. Large portion of solid wastes and farming wastes are being illegally treated and/or burned out. Surveys show that the main reasons for the illegal treatment of rural wastes are th lack of systematic policy tools targeting on them, insufficient financial capacity and man power of local governments, rural people's cognition problem about wastes, among others. This study reviews current features of the treatment of rural solid wastes and provides policy suggestions for the resolution of the problem.

Effect of Household Garbage on the SRF Biomass - Based on the B city (가정 폐기물이 SRF 바이오매스에 미치는 영향 - B시를 중심으로)

  • This study investigated the biomass content of fluff type SRF(Solid refuse fuel) operated in B city according to the physical composition. As a result of analyzing the physical composition of SRF, it was investigated that papers 25.2%, fiber 15.1%, vinyl·plastics 42.6%, woods 9.4%, rubbers 1.5%, diapers 3.2% and incombustibles 3.0%. The average of ash and combustible content of SRF was 10.5% and 89.5%, and the higher the proportion of paper and wood, the lower proportion of ash. In addition, the biomass of SRF is 24.9%~58.0%, with an average of 42.6%.

Storage and Disposal of Unused Medications for Housewives in the Busan Metropolitan City (부산광역시 주부들의 불용의약품 보관과 처리실태)

  • The purpose of this research is study how housewives dispose unused medications in a household and produce basic research data that can be used to establish efficient recycling and handling of unused medications. Data collection was done using proportional sampling and survey was done in February, 2011. The unused medications in household consist of "tablets(58.4%)", "ointment(31.3%)" and "eyewash(22.7%)". The main way of disposing unused medications was "standard garbage bag(74.1%)". The ideal way of disposing unused medications was "returning to the pharmacy(57.9%)". Only 39.2% of people recognize about unused medications disposal system. In order to establish recycling and treatment of unused medications, it is necessary to create laws and regulations related to unused medications and allocate budget to actively promote the program to public. Most importantly, we must induce doctors and pharmacies to participate in the campaign and there should be laws to require them to explain to their patients how to recycle and treat unused medications when they give prescription and make preparation to them.

  • An introduction of landfill tax has been recently in issue in order to raise the financial resource for establishing waste resource-circulation society. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the plan of increasing energy recovery from waste at Incheon Metropolitan City, and to propose several points to be considered in terms of introducing the landfill tax. There are a lot of problems that impede energy recovery from waste at Incheon Metropolitan City, such as high-calorific waste from decrease of food waste to the municipal incineration plant, metals and batteries in the standard plastic garbage bag, etc. Alternative policies to solve these major problems have been drawn.

The Effects of Food Delivery and Single-Person Household on Municipal Solid Waste Generation: Focus on the COVID-19 Period (음식 배달 및 1인 가구가 생활 폐기물 발생량에 미치는 영향: 코로나-19 시기를 중심으로)

  • Purpose - This study empirically analyzes the effects of food delivery service use frequency and the proportion of single-person households on the generation of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste). Additionally, the study analyzes MSW increase during the COVID-19 period. Design/methodology/approach - The study uses annual information on MSW and related characteristics of 228 Si, Gun, and Gu, which are administrative districts of Korea, from 2015 to 2020. Panel fixed effect model is employed for estimations. Findings - The study finds that food delivery and single-person household have significant effects only on recyclable and standard garbage bag MSW, respectively, not on all produce types of MSW. Additionally, it is estimated that, during the COVID-19 period, the increasing effect of food delivery is intensified while single-person households diminish its increasing effect. Lastly, the study confirms that the marginal effect on the increasing effect of MSW generation by the number of household members. Research implications or Originality - The estimated results are expected to provide useful information for the related policies. In particular, it is necessary to focus more on recyclable MSW concerning the developing delivery culture, and regarding changes in the family structure, focus more on the number of household members than single-person households.
