  • 73 percent of online games in Korea hold perspectives of medieval times in them. So far in history, about a millennium in medieval times is said to be a period of darkness and savagery, but it is newly revived in the digital virtual world. Such phenomenon is paradoxical and meaningful to often bring out 'medieval times' as a theme for online games, which are revealed by up-to-date technologies in present days. This research examines the background of views of medieval times appeared in online games and how they are realized. Medieval fantasy games have appeared because people dream about escaping from pre-modem times and have fantasy about medieval times. Moreover, perspectives of medieval times have enormously influenced background epics, quest stories, creation of characters in a game scenario. The dual structure having coexistence of nature and super naturalness acts an important role to set up the epic for medieval fantasy games. And medieval romance literature, which has a three-step quest narrative of 'targeting - adventure and fight - achievement' is reflected in a quest story of medieval fantasy games. The strict pyramid system represented by feudalism forms a meaningful metaphor for designing characters, and players organize communities for online games through horizontal collective consciousness in such vertical system of history at the same time.

  • In this article we describe our preliminary work to create VR interactive storytelling particularly for building empathic relationships between the reader (or the player) and story characters. As a practical guideline for developing empathy-based VR interactive story, we propose four key factors: first, narrativity considering narrative theories and concepts including the notion of focalization by Gerald Genette; second, interactivity for balancing between narrative and player control in interactive storytelling domain; third, consideration of virtual reality in human computer interaction domain; fourth, empathy in narrative from the viewpoint of psychology and cognitive science. We also introduce an example interactive storytelling scenario based on Little Red Riding Hood story. Finally we conclude with our VR implementation using Unreal game engine and HTC Vive.

  • The Hong Kong film "Project Gutenberg" has obtained the great achievements at the box office and public reputation due to such multiple factors as realistic counterfeit banknote production process, breathtaking gunfight scenes, brain-burning plot, unexpected reversal ending, personal charm of Chow Yun-Fat and so on. In terms of film narrative, the director utilized the narrator, Li Wen, to guide the police and audience in the limited angle of perspective into the scheme, and make the symbolic meaning image of the actor Chow Yun-Fat stengthen the audience's confirmation for the imagination of "painter", with the introduction of multiple narratives and flashback of different characters and scenes, and then finally, used the narrative structure with multiple lines and layers to uncover the truth. There are three great reversals in the film, each of which is overthrow for the film plot, and every overthrow is a disavowal of the audience's cognition for the previous story; therefore it brings the greatly emotional tension, making the audience get complete release and relief in the process of the psychological game of cognition, identification and decision-making at the end.

  • Following rapid development of software and hardware technologies and increasing enhancement in arithmetic capability, there are more and more content that can be accommodated and processed in video games, which is also increasingly complex and fine. Cutscene as a main narrative method have been developed, which have become necessary to express some key plots and important scenarios in games. Good cutscene can strengthen engagement of players with virtual world in games and make players share affection and sorrow with roles in games; while badly-designed cut-scene or overused cut-scene will impair immersion of players and affect players' gaming experience; for this reason, developers should not continue cut-scene design just from opinions of designers nor make players passive receivers, instead, they should reduce as much as possible interruption by cut-scene to players' immersion and grant players with better immersion. After all, only designs depending on demands and preferences of players by having some knowledge of impacts of cut-scene on players' immersion can be accepted by players.

  • This study applied the scenario of the film "Warcraft: The Beginning, 2016" based on the world view and nonlinear story of online games to the basic requirements of a good story of five items. Based on this, it was found that the storyline of the film "Warcraft: The Beginning, 2016" was faithful to the game series with the same title, but weak for a film. This film did not satisfy any of the five requirements of a good scenario used for Hollywood production. Even before this film, many hit games were made into films, but box office hits are hard to find among them. As the game World of Warcraft was very famous worldwide, when it was made into a film, the film was expected to be a box office hit. However, it failed miserably at the box office. This is a result of failing to recognize that the characteristics of games that an individual leads the story are different from those of films that no interaction or choice can be made. It is necessary to understand that although games and films are the same in that they have narrative structures and visual stimulation graphics, they are totally different in the way they immerse people.

  • Aristotle's Poetics is the earliest work of dramaturgy. It explains some of the most important narrative notions, for example, Mimesis, Katharsis, Mythos(Plot), Ethos(Character), Anagnorisis and Peripeteia. etc. Aristotle considered the plot which is the arrangement of events, as the most important element of drama. This paper presents an example of a plot configuration as an alternative to the traditional narration used since Aristotle. Dead Island, developed by Techland and published by Deep Silver, is one of the most successful action role-playing survival zombie video games. Its trailer, the Winner of Gold Prize for Internet Film at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2011. Since the purpose of the trailer is to attract the audiences/gamers to the film/game, it has generally a similer narrative method from its own works. But Dead Island trailer is different. We treat this trailer as an short animation. It could be a new example of the non-linear narrative by the control of the time for example, temporal arrangement, direction and speed. We analyse all shots of Dead Island's trailer with Poetics' rules and with $G{\acute{e}}rard$ Genette's some narrative notions for example temporal order and duration. Furthermore we look for how to maximize the audiences' curiosity by the adjustment of the time, combined with its shocking images.

  • Literary works are used as materials for various cultural contents including plays, movies, cartoons, and games. According to the results of the previous study, it is possible to create a game story that is plausible and universal even if the game storytelling is carried out using the elements extracted from the source data. It is expected that the analysis of the transformed contents of literary works will be analyzed. In this paper, we analyze the scenario of "Mabinogi" using literary works in domestic online games using Greimas' s actant model. The analyzed results are compared with Hamlet, which is the source of the source, and analyzed the structure, age, background, heroine, goal, theme. This study confirms the change of the narrative when the literature is contents, and the analysis is meaningful in analyzing the transformational patterns of game scenarios based on literary works. I hope that it will contribute to the study of various methods of storytelling by various materials of literature works.

  • Advances in technology are enhancing the player's visual satisfaction in games. Reflexively, narrative satisfaction has not been highlighted. This led to a player's critical view of the absence of original games. Especially in gameplay, quests require repeat and similar content and imperative tasks. It is overlooked that a quest can cause players to produce various meanings and effects. The concept of editing ability to reorganize the designed rules of the player beyond the performance and behavioral rules is conceptualized, and the four types of players that operate the characteristics can see that the player can intensify game play and immerse himself in play saw.
