Player's actions in a game occur in the process of gameplay experiences in a play space designed by the developer according to preset gameplay beats. Focusing on beats that induce a first-person shooter (FPS) game's main gameplay, this paper analyzes the differences in eye gaze information found in different players during the course of gameplay. For this research goal, the study divides the beat areas in which play actions appear in association with gameplay beats at a typical FPS game level, repeatedly conducts tests in accordance with a player's experience level (novice and expert group), and collects and analyzes eye gaze information data in three types of beat areas. The analysis result suggests concrete guidelines for game level design for different beat areas based on an FPS game player's experience level. This empirical experiment method and result can lessen repetitive modification work for game level design and consequently be utilized for optimizing the game level to the developer's intention.
Game level design is one of the important parts in the commercial game development. Because of its complexity in combining game components, game design work could be classified into a non-linear problem. In this paper, we propose a new automated game level design system by using genetic algorithms. With our system, a game designer easily generates an optimized game level by designating the key parameters m the initial stage of game design. Our system can be useful in reducing the trial-errors in the initial game level design process.
Level design of online FPS games has not been researched enough for its active development and service. For the most part, FPS design patterns only have been classified based on PVE level design. However, it is necessary to look at it in light of PVP level design in the online FPS multi-player games. Therefore, we analyzed one of the most preferred team-death match levels in 'Point Blank'. This research holds its significance in suggesting the new PVP level design patterns compared to PVE level design patterns after conducting in-depth interviews on three FPS developers.
Level design is one of the important factors in tower defense game development. The difficulty of tower defense game depends on its wave design. In general, it requires a lot of manual labor to generate well-balanced waves with fun. In this paper, we propose a new automated wave generation system by using a genetic algorithm. With our system, a game designer can easily generate an optimized wave by designating the difficulty level in the initial stage of game design. Our system can be useful in reducing the trial-errors in the initial level design process of tower defense game development.
Game level design is a collaborative work to create a virtual world for a computer game including maps, agents, monsters, objects, players and events based on predefined its game scenario. It is a promising collaborative design application. The game level design generally requires much time and cost, as the size of its target game space becomes huge. However, traditional game level design tools do not provide concurrency control mechanisms among multiple participating game designers. They do not provide consistency of undo and redo mechanisms for erroneous collaborative tasks during iterative modifications and updates of collaborative tasks among multiple designers. In this paper, we propose a concurrency control and a collaborative editing mechanism to enhance productivity of the collaborative game level design. The proposed system provides hierarchical structures of shared objects and a concurrency control mechanism for each object. The proposed system also provides a consistent undo and redo mechanism to enhance modifications and updates on intermediate results of the level design procedures.
A game player experiences gameplay that game designer sets in play space according to goal of a game. Player's experiential behaviors are affected by the space structure of game level and its arrangements. Therefore, it is an important process to understand and analyze the space structure of game level at the initial stage of game designing. In this paper, we was aimed to analyze the space structure and components of FPS game level based on space theory. To attain the objective, observation was carried out on a total of 204 levels in 3 different kinds of FPS games and the difference in the distribution of spatial composition factors by the goal of a game level was identified. As a result of the analysis, experiential behaviors in the play space show a clear difference according to the goal of the game level and the space structure that derives this is different.
In computer games, the level design and balance of characters are the key features for developing interesting games. Level designers make decision to change the parameters and opponent behaviors in order to avoid the player getting extremely frustrated with the improper level. Generally, opponent behavior is defined by static script, this causes the games to have static difficulty level and static environment. Therefore, it is difficult to keep track of the user playing interest, because a player can easily adapt to changeless repetition. In this paper, we propose a dynamic scripting method that able to maintain the level designers' intention where user enjoys the game by adjusting the opponent behavior while playing the game. The player's countermeasure pattern for dynamic level design is modeled using a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). The proposed method is applied to a shooting game, and the experimental results maintain the degree of interest intended by the level designer.
Game environment, game map and background graphic design is very important elements and factors that support fun, look & feel, immersion and player's acting fields. In this paper we defined elements of game background environment. And then make an investigation and refer to sundry records and books, we described elements of periodic environments, historic environments, natural environments, artificial environments, cultural environments, virtual environments, weather environments. Especially, the study suggests the model of game environment desgin to apply game map and game background graphic design.
Main focus of FPS game's play is securing vantage points in space based on specific theme and removing enemies. It could be more directly interacted with players' game space than other genres. This paper analyzes design patterns on FPS game of nine types consisted of three themes : past war, modern war, near future war, which is based on 10 different patterns of near future theme-oriented by Hullett and Whitehead. As an outcome, an important function of 'element of cover' was found additionally as a main pattern besides the 10 different patterns. And by analyzing its attributes, it is suggested the efficient way to use the 'cover' pattern for level-design. This result can be utilized as an empirical guideline for level-design of FPS games by theme.
Until now, the level design for games has played a very important role in the process of developing games since it has been mapped out and applied so the game players have fun to certain level in playing games. So as game becomes more complex the number of game designers also grow and to make diverse levels, work force and working hours also should grow larger. In this treatise, it suggest a way where level's structure is changing dynamically so with only one level you can experience diverse levels by introducing wandering agent to the level structure. Also, I am trying to show the possibility of balance between the players by wandering agent.
